Hacking The Cons of using SX OS!

What would you rather do?

  • Get backup loading now even if Atmosphere wont be supported earlier on Higher firmware.

  • I'll stay on lower firmware and wait for Atmosphere.

  • I'll stay on lower firmware and wait for Atmosphere, but still use TX dongle for convenience

  • I'll only play small games on my fat32 sd card and not update.

Update: With the recent info revealed in faq#2 there doesn't seem to be any cons to using SX OS as of now.

Let's be honest, early adopters of SX products is because they want access to backup loading ASAP. But there's a caveat. You will have to update your switch to the latest firware version and thus cutting yourself off from the earlier versions of Atmosphere.
Here's why:
SX OS backup loader uses game dumps in the XCI format which is a 1:1 copy of the game cartridge. Small games won't be a problem but let's say you have a switch on fw 4.1.0 and you want to load a backup of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe which has an XCI file of almost 8GB. You will need an SDXC card formatted to exFAT since you can't copy a file over 4GB to a FAT32 formatted sd card. The moment you put that 64GB sd card on your switch it will prompt you to update. So even though you get backup loading sooner with SX OS, you will have to wait longer to get more support from Atmosphere once it comes out since you will be on the latest firmware.

UPDATE: This release might be a workaround if it does indeed work.

This tool was updated to include splitting.

UPDATE:SX OS faq#2 confirms
  • Q: Which file format does SX OS support? What about split files?
    A:
    We support both FAT32 and exFAT.
    SX OS will also try to look for split files in the form of "filename.xc0" "filename.xc1" "filename.xc2" and so on to support ROMs larger than 4GB on FAT32.
This actually solves the problem as all you would need to do is format your SDXC card to FAT32 and you do not have to update to latest firmware.
Use this tool to format your sdxc card to fat 32 in windows. https://gbatemp.net/download/gui-format.33869/

IIRC the exFAT update doesn't affect your actual firmware.
to my understanding it does. Maybe it didn't before, say if you had fw 3 and 5 wasn't available.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I need to double check up I don't remember formatting my sd card to fat32. Sorry if I wasn't clear.
if your sd card is 32gb or less it's already fat32.

UPDATE 2 Actually this tool won't cut it. No pun intended. A trimmed rom won't be enough to bring an 8GB file to less than 4GB.

Somebody just discovered fire :lol:

The only reason to use TX SX is to run backups, and it works on all firmwares. So why wouldn't you update?
Because Atmosphere will take some more days or weeks to be available? So what? If you are buying TX's product you don't care about homebrew that much or you are in a hurry to run backups.

Some people might just want to use the dongle and still wait for Atmosphere.

my stance is that tx will get me backups and maybe eventually cheats faster than atmosphere so im going with it for now. Tx has a more direct and quick way of me getting what i want as anything being added to atmosphere is probably going to take god fuck forever lol. plus they dont support piracy so yea im on tx's side for now, until atmosphere is more convenient/safe

I think I'll go with TX. Especially if it has a way to let you go online with backups like the Wii U. I'd wait and see right now, but TX def has me hooked right now.
Because I'd want to go online with my "backups" lul.

no.........
FBI = open source
USB Loader GX = open source
Loadiine GX2 = open source
GodMode9 = open source
disc2app = open source
FBI is neither a backup loader nor a game dumper, and wow you're only thinking of nintendo shit.
It took years until those alternatives were available btw, the first ones available have always been closed source(for the most part). or the source got published later on as some tools became obsolete.

The thing is though, just like the 3DS with flashcarts you can adopt early but eventually everyone will get it for free, and your flashcart will be useless. Its the mentality of enjoying a reward now, or waiting it out and saving money then enjoying the same reward completely free in a few months.

This is coming from someone who did this with the 3DS, I bought a flashcart because I was in a RUSH to get backups running, then after a few months, I didn't need the flashcart and wasted the money. I suppose to each their own, if you've got the money to burn on an eventually useless product, go for it, but just know that your product that you bought in a hurry will be useless in a month or so.
