As stated by @CrazyForCashews, the ones who did it say you need the super low profile caps. The other varieties by Lenovo does not work; you might be able to sand down the base to lower the height but there might be differences in their shaft diameter and center hole depth.

Thanks a lot for the effort finding an actual pic. This looks pretty decent. I had a Lenovo thinkpad once as a company laptop and it works.
After all, the whole idea of C-stick nub is definitely insane. Dont know why nintendo decided to go for nubs. My hands are light and having to put all pressure just to use the c-stick has proven to be quite a stressful task to me.
Why does nintendo think its fun to play on a small immobile hard and absurd nub? They always find a way to fuck up one way or the other.

You gotta keep in mind that their c-stick nub design was limited by the space available of the original old 3DS layout. They couldn't drastically change going from old to new series without rubbing off 3DS users the wrong way (lol, pun intended).

Another problem they probably ran into is that they couldn't use existing cap designs by Sony, Lenovo, Dell, etc. without either getting sued or paying $$$ license to use them. Something as simple as caps could have landed them big lawsuit, so I can't blame them in avoiding this possibility by making the most bland (and useless) nub for their final product.

The good thing where they didn't screw up is that their c-stick peg interface is compatible with PSP-1000 and TrackPad. They totally could have pulled an Apple in making a weird male interface standard that no other companies used.

Your idea makes sense but the design is awful in its own ways. Or rather it couldve been better. The cstck nub is useful in light uses like mouse pointer in laptops but never in hard fast paced usage like gaming consoles. The 3ds has sure a lot of space they could clear off the way to make space for a proper c stick like the start and select buttons which are minimally used. They could have gone for a smaller sticks and place it below the abxy buttons move the start select horizontally instead of vertical or switch it the left side instead of the left. The possibilities are insanely too much as long as it is functional and easy. Which is not in the case of the nub. They went for a hardware revision big time when the new processor came out, why not be a good company and prove it to be a better hardware and make it a console worth it for upgrade instead of trying to keep it the same with the previous generations.they will still support the old gen anyways. That way people would even consider the new line worthy of upgrade possibly boost sales.

My point is that these console revision is still a revision, one way or the other some people will be sad but thats how it is. Ive seen countless modifications and it the concept seems great like this:

Or this

The button placements can be nicer and then the next generation, they implemented it right here.

I never felt the switch joycons as to be ergonomically convenient, but its usable and easy to use. Imagine if nintendo decided to put a nub in the switch. Would agree or disapprove?

That 3ds is frustrating. No wonder many people wanted to forget it after the switch went out.

Yes. That's the one I used for both my N3DSXL and N3DS.

My INSTEN PSP 1000 c-stick came today, and it still is "wobbly".
The stick is now lower and doesn't touch the screen (at least i think so), but because it is so wobbly, it is kind of unusable.
Which glue is the best to use for glue the c-stick on the 3ds?

This setup would work if the 3DS had more bulk for its brick shape. If you pretend holding it where the thumb style c-stick would be, you soon learn your right hand doesn't get a good grip clasping the shell to the center of your hand palm. This setup works if you have a hand grip adapter like Cyber Gadget or Monster Hunter, or holding something more akin to a home console video game controller. Another problem I see is if you move the X/Y/B/A buttons too far up so your right thumb doesn't overreach as much using the bottom c-stick, is that your thumb hit the top of the hinge are.

It works on the O2DS and Switch because of their true brick shape and tall enough.

And yes, you're right. Resistive input suck balls for fast pace action and movement. Nub on the Switch would have bombed the console for sure and started a 3DS thumb stick modding craze. Haha.

Which glue is the best to use for glue the c-stick on the 3ds?

You'll want to pick up a clear, pliable glue such as hot glue or silicone glue. These are sticky enough to hold the cap to the c-stick peg while being malleable enough that in case you mess up with installation, you can remove the cap for a do over.

I don't know what the equivalent glue brands are available in Deutschland; for North America users, I recommend Amazing GOOP, Liquid Nails, or Loctite Clear Silicone. You'll also need a toothpick when applying a tiny bit of glue. Make sure to follow the instructions I wrote about how to glue the cap to the c-stick peg. It's possible to put it on wrong!

I glued the Insten C-Stick now with Hot Glue and it isn't wobbly anymore! Very nice.
But I think it touches the screen a little bit again, but the dent doesn't bother me at all :)

I highly recommend purchasing these directly from Lenovo as it has free shipping, and you get 10 caps for about $14 ~ $15 after tax. You also know you're getting the real deal. Pass them out to your buddies or split the cost between each other if you think you have too much.

Mine does too in touching the top screen. It's not bad as there's not enough pressure between cap and glass to cause damage when the 3DS is clammed up.

It sucks you got shafted by a poorly made PSP cap. When I bought my Insten caps from Amazon, and I almost made the decision of going with a generic cap from eBay due to a wacky difference in savings shopping for other stuff. I have no Amazon prime, but there was a last minute discount that changed my purchasing decision.

Thanks for contributing back to the community. You've saved many 3DS users the heartache of running into this problem. :yay:

I'll post back on this thread with a review.

Edit - Update May 23, 2018
- I received my Lenovo TrackPoint, but I'm going to hold back doing the mod and writing the review. Waiting on a second set of (blue) caps meant for HP/Dell laptops.

I also wanted to test the blue caps. Are these measurements okay? Or are there any smaller ones?
While they have better grip than the stock Nintendo nub, the replica Dell blue caps are in general sucky.

Negatives
  • It doesn't fit in the c-stick hole unless you carefully and evenly sand down the side wall with soft grit sandpaper. The diameter is a little too wide.
  • It's not as comfortable versus the Lenovo Super Low Profile TrackPoint and Sony PSP-1000 cap. Those bumps bite into your thumb until worn down a little to be less pointy.
    • You'll either have to form some calluses or desensitize the nerves in your right thumb. Not children friendly.
  • Because the square hole is a little bigger than the c-stick's square peg, the diagonal directions: ↖ ↗ ↘ ↙ are deaden. This cap is not ideal for games with 1st person cameras.

There are advantages the Dell has over the Lenovo and Sony options.

Positives
  • While the input lag trails just slightly behind the PSP-1000, it has a quicker response than the Lenovo nub.
    • The Lenovo has some "give" or pseudo tactile feedback that comes at the expense of noticeable lag.
    • The Sony has direct linkage to the c-stick peg, but you don't really feel the directions your thumb pushes.
  • Due to the harder rubber material, well defined cylindrical raised edge design, and better initial bite versus the PSP-1000 but not as grippy as the TrackPoint, this blue cap makes great work at thumb-nail flicks.
What these adds up to is that Dell cap excels in Super Smash Bros if your play style favors performing smashes with the c-stick.

So would you recommend the red caps from lenovo?

I have only 2 or 3 games which requires the c stick. Xenoblade and Monster Hunter.
Lenovo nubs work well for games like Monster Hunter. I never played Xenoblade, but if it's an open world game which uses the c-stick for 360-degree viewing, go with the red one. It's the easiest to install, very comfortable for a wide range of thumb sizes, and resists slippage when your thumb is sweaty. While more expensive than the Sony and Dell stuff and wears out the fastest because of the soft rubber and short stubs, receiving 10 nubs when bought straight from Lenovo website more than makes up for it.

If you're coming from the Nintendo stock nub, the Lenovo TrackPoint is a god send.

***

However, if you're already using the Sony cap, you may find that the Sony is better than the Lenovo in certain regards. As odd as this sounds, even though the PSP-1000 is made of plastic and requires some care when installing it (semi-permanent glue in case you get the wobble),..
  • 1) The PSP-1000 is better suited to those with sensitive or precision honed thumbs.
When properly mounted, due to how the cap directly mounts to the c-stick peg, people with CS:GO level pinpoint aiming, or carpal tunnel → inadvertently mastering the trackball mouse, will appreciate the minimal response lag. The Lenovo's pseudo tactile feedback comes at the cost of feeling mushy.
  • 2) The PSP-1000's larger surface area and knurled texture provides ample resting grip.
The Lenovo's rubber surface gives a better bite "catching" your thumb when it first comes in contact with the nub. However with the Sony, you don't have to press down and push as hard in the direction of continuous camera movement once your thumb is fully on the cap.

I think the lenovo track nub is the superior one because it works out of the box. No wobble or anything. Just yank out the og nub, slap the lenovo one in and enjoy. The psp one might be a bit more tactile, but mounting it right can be a hassle and many times requires glue or something to sit just right. In my opinion the PSP Stick feels inferior to the touch.

By the by, does anyone know good circle stick mods for better grip? I still want it to close the n3ds xl normally. I Found a few replacements but the other buyers all complain that they dont fit at all, ar a bit smaller or wobble even. I mean i dont even need to replace the thing completely. I just want more grip. That silicone like stuff on the og stick is nice to touch but does nothing for grip. I dont want to resort to "tape something on it" or something. I Want a permanent solution.

EDIT: Removed the Typos. Wow is ist sometimes hard to type on a Smartphone while you are really tired.

any good alternatives? I want one in black, just really don't like the color red on my 3ds lol
