Monster Hunter Movie Set to Begin Shooting in September

MHLogo.png

Originally announced in 2016, little was known of Capcom's latest venture to the silver screen. With it being largely forgotten in the wake of Monster Hunter World, and the recently announced Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, fans may be excited to hear shooting is set to begin later this year.

As with any video game being adapted into a film, it's easy for an audience to be apprehensive. With previous failures including such legendary names as Mortal Kombat and Super Mario Bros, many look to them with a cautious gaze, ever-curious if their beloved franchise will be lifted further into the public light, or plunged into the dark dregs of history's worst. Monster Hunter may yet find hope. Featuring the Resident Evil series' star actress and director, Milla Jovovich and Paul W. S. Anderson, Capcom are eager to see a repeat of their previous successes.

Do you think Anderson is a good fit for the franchise? Which monsters would you like to see on the big screen? Let us know below!

It's time to stop!
I want to believe the freedoms afforded from such a general brand as Monster Hunter will allow Anderson to come up with something great. MH has the world, the atmosphere, and the monsters. Beyond that, it's all up to him. Not like with the Resi films where people got mad they didn't stick to the stories lol.

I live in hope!

The bigger issue is though is that the games have a very basic story that is very easy to screw up. So there is a lot of opportunities for these games, but a lot that can easily go so wrong

Hunter in village. Random guy, maybe he has amnesia...maybe he doesn't. But hes been in the village doing xxx for xxx amount of time when a giant staple monster xxx attacks and trashes almost everything, he fights to fend it off and is saved by members of the guild...guild explains to him xxx monsters origin and hes has to do xxxxxxx thing to defeat xxxx monster. Guild goes with him to do said xxxxxxx thing to get some awesome xxxxxxx gear and then after achieving it they return to xxx monster effin some shit up. Xxxx female love interest dies, amnesia guy kills monster and dedicates his life to serving in the guild in honor of the memory of his 2 week waifu. Thus setting it up for a sequel and another love interest.

They better not steal my script.

he already screwed up, the plot is gonna be about evil monsters that come to the real world so the protag has to beat them up, basically missing the whole point of the hunter part of monster hunter

Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson? Not interested. Seriously Capcom why not just have an animated movie? The CGI Resident Evil movies turned out pretty well. The Ace Attorney anime is way better than the Ace Attorney movie.

Why couldn't they just make another anime like they did with MHStories? That much should at least work and would have considerably lower production costs with a MUCH higher chance for success. They could just take 3U's story for example (because it IS the best story out of the non-existing stories in the series) and work with that. Rookie hunter is sent to investigate mysterious earthquakes in Moga, but since he's just a rookie, he's not really looked at like he's anyone capable. Then the villagers warm up to him while he conducts investigations and helping protect the village. Then do the whole Lagiacrus thing and up until Ceadeus. Finally, show the whole dance with Cha-cha and Kayamba at the end that shows in the game after Ceadeus is defeated, have a minute-long collage of scenes fighting different monsters while making comrades (Tanzia Port basically) and ending it with a glimpse at the start of the Dire Miralis fight. That's it, 50-70 minutes long should be plenty, not hard to pull off, no need to even go for CG as regular animation will work a lot better and almost impossible to mess it up. Why pay tons of money for something that will end up as crap as the other movie adaptations of games?

Imo the first mortal kombat was nice, it's a product of it's time.

The first resident evil movie was ok, imo, after that it went down hill pretty fast...

Having him feature his wife in this, I'm almost certain it'll end up like resident evil...

I'm gonna skip this one regardless of the trailers...

My guess is the film will be a financial success but with critical backlash, since the main team who created the Resident Evil film franchise is created this movie.

Don't know why people say such things, the RE films are HORRENDOUS. The acting is bottom notch, the special effects are worse than Bollywood's (they are BAD, not even funny bad) and the only thing they got going for them is the big names behind them (basically only reason they really get positive feedback is people sucking up to them just for the names). That's not a success, even if it rakes in some money...

Yes, I'm aware that the RE films are bad and I did not watch any of them because of that. What I meant to say is that my guess is the Monster Hunter movie might not be good at all, but will still be a financial success because of the big names behind them. With the director they choose who will also write the screenplay, I'm not expecting anything positive with this adaptation.

I guess they could be a success, but only on the first day before the reviews are out and it gets rotten tomatoed to oblivion:P So basically, any financial success will probably only be then, with subsequent showings hardly selling any tickets.

The more I think about it, less hope I have for this movie being anything other than a pile of shit. Paul W. S. Anderson has never made a good movie. I know that's subjective, but his movies have never even made it past a 60% by most reviewers. Again subjective, but I feel like someone getting constantly panned is a rather concerning about their overall quality. Milla Jovovich also has an extremely long career of staring in some pretty awful movie and also a terrible game based off a movie. Neither of them are very promising and I can almost guarantee that this movie is going to be a pile of shit.

The Resident Evil films got very silly as the series went on but I at least found them entertaining for the first few and it failed to deteriorate into unwatchable trash as things went on. I have yet to see the latest offerings though (last one I saw was in Vegas). Treat them as late 80s/early 90s action films and they start to work, and in case you have forgotten then that is a lot of what Resident Evil is/was about. "but story" is but nothing as far as I am concerned -- they could have followed a game plot and maybe had it work but they pulled off something here.

Anyway we shall see what becomes of this. As mentioned in many another Monster Hunter thread it tends to bore me to tears, this despite being composed of everything I enjoy in games (crafting, exploration, giant monsters, thoughtful combat -- any one of those has made games in the past for me, all together should be better still) which only makes it a harder thing to see. If however they can take the premise and slide in an enjoyable story (see my comments on Resident Evil above) then I am game.

Were it another director I would wonder if DeadlyAnGeL91792 was not a time traveller.
