Nintendo applies for a trademark for the Triforce

IMG_7924.PNG

The Triforce is an iconic symbol from Nintendo's Legend of Zelda series. It's been used in games, toys, clothes, and to decorate some of Nintendo's limited edition handheld systems. So it would make sense that Nintendo would want ensure their ownership of it, and as of now, they certainly are trying to. The company registered a trademark for usage of the word Triforce in all gaming media (mobile, handheld, and console games). It's interesting to note that Nintendo of America has had a trademark on the name since 2011, but Nintendo of Japan has not.

I can't read any of the actual source material, but what exactly are they wanting the trademark for? The symbol itself dates back pretty far, and I'm pretty sure a Japanese company uses it as their logo. So are they just going for the name? Or the combination of the name with the symbol?

It appears that they're trademarking the word itself for use in video game related properties.

Trademark on the logo would be difficult, is far too simple (basic geometric forms) to be appliable for registry in many places, and there are other entities who use logos alike, and would be a hell of a dispute.

Yeah exactly, you could say trademarking it would be squaring the circle. Badum-tss!

Trademarks are granted to a specific field, so if this was explicitly the name and the symbol in game related contexts I can see it being granted.

Oh for fuck's sake Nintendo. You can't trademark/patent/copyright putting 3 triangles together unless you invented triangles themselves.

What's next? Breaking news: Squares invented by gaming company!

Have some decency.

EDIT: Turns out Nintendo is only trying to trademark the word "Triforce", not the logo. Ignore my previous statement.

Wouldn't this harm games that uses Triforce as an emblem? I know Halo/FPS games have it for sure. This is just an extremely late move on their part the logo itself even the name is too basic
It would need to be trademarked with the Zelda Franchise

that symbol looks very generic and it seems quite abundant in occult world. I hope it doesn't mean everyone else cannot use that symbol now.

So three Egyptians pyramids/triangles put together can qualify for a trademark lol. I'm gonna put 4 lines together and make a square like the guy above and trademark that! Then I'm going to put a long stick together with a short stick and make a cross/crucifix and trademark that next!
