Some of you will remember the ungentlemanly post I made calling everyone who bought Mario Kart 8 DX a part of “the silent majority of idiots who dominate the marketplace”. My main reasons for this were the extra content added should have already been in the Wii U game and the technical improvements weren't worth paying full-price twice for. These days I'm prepared to say that while I don't like seeing Wii U games getting ported over it does make good business sense.
I still don't like Switch ports of Wii U games because while the technical improvements are nice the games are sold at full-price with minimal new content. Mario Kart 8 DX has all the DLC, a proper battle mode which should have been in the Wii U game and some gameplay tweaks which should have been released as updates for the Wii U game. The only new content available is a few new characters which don't play differently to any existing ones. Pokken DX has a few new modes and characters which probably would have been released as updates and DLC for the original, had the Wii U not been forsaken by it's Gods at Nintendo.
I really wanted to re-buy Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. It has a new Funky (easy) mode but no new levels; Donkey Kong Country: Returns 3D added both an easy mode and new levels. The one game that shines as an example of how Wii U games should be ported over is Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker; it actually adds new Mario Odyssey themed levels.
If you don't already own the game on the Wii U then while the Switch ports are unfairly priced you're still getting good bang for your buck. I refused to buy Hyrule Warriors on the Wii U calling it an incomplete game citing it's short development time, technical issues and pre-launch DLC. I'm buying it on the Switch next month. If you do own the Wii U version then you're getting cheated by the developer you supported while they were in a pretty desperate situation. If the Switch ports of games I already own had substantial new content which doesn't fall under the "should have been on the Wii U" category to offer then I'd be more likely to buy them.
tl;dr? the problem is the lack of additional content
