More details about Nintendo Switch online services to be revealed in May

switchon.jpg

Nintendo is making waves in the news lately, thanks to the new details in their financial investor report. Nintendo had already announced that the online service for the Nintendo Switch would be kicking off later this year in September, though details have been minimal. However, in May, Nintendo will reveal further information about their plans for their paid online services. Currently, the Switch Online mobile app is available on iOS and Android, and we know that online will cost $20/year.

Nintendo Switch Online, a paid subscription service that will expand the online functionality of Nintendo Switch, will begin in September of this year. The service will provide consumers with a richness of online features that allow them to continuously enjoy Nintendo Switch. More information will be presented on our website in early May.

Nintendo is taking a decent approach to online gaming, however, I still think it should remain free. However, you will be getting access to classic game with added online game-play. So rather it just being Nintendo reselling old classics, they'll have added functionality. I'm not 100% if that means that you will get a game for free, or if it just means you can access games to buy or if it's a streaming service like PS Now or something. For what Sony and Microsoft charges for 2 months, you get a full year of Nintendo Online. I do wish they'd add voice chat to the system rather than having to use a smartphone though.

If they launch a web browser someday, will it requires online service?

I think it would be cool if they let you play VC games online on servers or as Netplay-ish it would be so cool

a richness of online features
messaging service?
what the point having friends if you can't talk or send screenshots/captured video? I don't have facebook/twit/whatever to post pictures on it, I need to shutdown and remove SD, to send files to friends.
"look at the moon I found in mario just now!" would be faster with online service.

Though, I hope some online services will be free (like friend messaging), and only online play will need fees.

That's a good question. The basis of a subscription scheme is a service rendered, this means that traffic should only be subject to a subscription if it relies on Nintendo servers. This would logically exclude the Web browser and streaming services like YouTube which have nothing to do with Nintendo Network. Hopefully that's the implementation they choose, it's the only model that's sensible.

I sincerely do hope they implement the online features in a proper manner. I mean, free service is one thing, paid service should come with the minimum.
