Battle Royale 'Darwin Project' Is Now Free-To-Play On Steam

One of the latest addition to the battle royale hype, Scavengers Studio's Darwin Project, is now free to play on Steam. The game entered in Early Access in early March, costing $15 and became free-to-play on April 20, still in Early Access, on Steam. Nevertheless, the Xbox One version of the game still carries a price tag of $15.

The decision to go free-to-play comes following complaints by community members regarding longer queue times and difficulty finding matches in lesser populated servers. This move aims to bring in more players and maintain a decent level of activity.

As with other games in the genre, Darwin Project pits 10 players in an arena to fight to the death. The game also has some original features like the "Show Director" where one player is the host and master who controls the arena with nuclear bombs, zone closures, gravity storms, and the power of their voice. It also supports live spectator interactions where stream viewers can also bet live on the competitors they think will reign supreme, in addition to helping the Show Director choose targets for their arena-shaping powers.

Scavengers Studio also promises to never go pay-to-win by selling items that give a competitive advantage. But rather, cosmetic items will be the ones that will carry an actual price tag.

If you own Darwin Project, you’ll receive the Founder’s Pack containing 2 Legendary sets, 3 Legendary Axes, 3 Legendary Bows, a full jumpsuit collection, and 5 Fan Gifts. It will be added to your inventory on Tuesday, April 24. Over 200 cosmetic items that players can unlock by gaining Fans and leveling up will also be added on April 24.

Yet another Windows-only Battle Royale, no thanks.

On Steam? Thanks, but not even being free will make me install that junk called Steam... -_-
Are you a full GOG user? I really like how their games are DRM-free and don't require any extra software running, plus the store isn't a mess.

Oh, it's that one they showed off at Microsoft's E3 show last year. The one with the kinda cringey commentor in the yellow shirt. From what I'm reading here, there's some interesting ideas, but I think that BR games are now reaching that point of hopeless saturation, as with all game fads.

Am I the only one who hates battle royale games? Unlike CS:GO or something, if you die you die. Don't really like the concept...

Well different people like different games, same as different people hate different games. :)
I find most battle royal games fine for the most part, you die, you die, It makes it more exciting, because you only have one chance.

Well, this battle royal is already much different with the player size. 10 max for now. So matches shouldn't last too long in this game. Most are 100 players at a time and at least one is planning to go higher than that. That said, every game have other modes like teams and duos for faster matches. Not to mention, you can always back out and find another match, if you are too impatient.

You're apparently not a PC gamer so I don't think they were targeting you anyway.

Wrong you are.

If I'm not willing to install that junk of software called Steam is because I know about it firsthand. And yes, I'm a PC player, but I just don't play everything that gets released just for the sake of it.

Not a full GOG user, but I like that concept of DRM-Free play. Its like paying for getting handcuffed, without the fun of it (if you know what I mean). :P

You know you can purchase games on steam and crack them yourself if you want to have a drm-free backup, right? Very practical for multiplayer games where you need steam anyway, but still want a copy to play in case you don't have internet.
