Hi guys,

I just found my old 3DS which I haven't used in ages and thought of selling it. But then I thought, hmmm... lets give it a try with hacking it first.

Is there any way to start up 3DS Roms or emulate DS, SNES & maybe other consoles? There are so many threads, I really don't know where to start.

Or would be some kind of M4 card be a better option?

Cheers

Did you mean "DO NOT UPDATE UNTIL Arm9LoaderHax is installed on the system"?
Since It could make OP confuse while reading the guide til he/she has to do an update step.

Right, yes. Updating is fine once A9LH is installed, but also when the community says it's okay.

You had the right idea! Like you were meant to hack it all along...

Hi Guys,

so I tried to hack it today and got this error message when trying to install CIA file:

Failed to install CIA file.
Result code: 0xC8E08001
Level: Status (25)
Summary: Invalid argument (7)
Module: AM (32)
Desc: <unknown> (1)

I'm using this tutorial:
3ds.hacks.guide/finalizing-setup
I was at Section IV - Installing CIAs

I did step by step and actually I'm pretty clueless about the whole thing, its my first hack :D

Finally, after a year? XD.
Just try to reinstall the cias. I believe you already used boot9strap instead of A9LH. Since you got there, theres now need to worry since you got the B9S installed.

Yeah, I know ^^ I was kind of overwhelmed by the long turorial back then... my body wasn't ready :D
I deleted all the cia files from the SD Card and copied it back but i got the same error message. Is it maybe because I don't know if my card is MBR or GPT? At least I know its Fat32.

If it helps:
on the top screen it says:

Name: ._Anemone3DS.cia
Attributes: Hidden, Archive
Size: 4.00 KiB

Try redownloading Anemone3ds.cia fresh from the github link and replace the file back. Seems corrupted to me. If not, try deleting the Anemone3ds.cia first and proceed with the installation of CIAs even without the anemone3ds. If it installs, proceed with the tutorial, after completion:

Proceed to FBI>Titledb>Anemone3ds and install it through there.

Try opening the eShop, letting it set up, then closing the eShop. From there try to install the CIA again.

ok guys, thanks for the help. I tried clicking on just "install cia" wothout the deleting part. Still got the errors but i kept pressing b a couple of times and the cia got miraculously installed :D
I installed freeshop now.

What would be the next step now?

Is it possible to put old NDS games on the SD card and play them?

For old NDS games, look into nds-bootstrap (meaning TWLoader or NDS Forwarders, find the threads for them in the search). Having an flashcart can help with compatibility, but you can play a very large chunk of the NDS library just fine from the SD card and many even at cart speeds!

Now you just install homebrews, games, etc. Do what your heart desires~
It's mostly possible to play DS games off the SD card

Although it's still suggested to buy a flashcart for most DS games, especially games larger than 32MB

About the 32MB thing, that's not true. Even 128MB games like Pokemon Platinum run at almost cart speed without issues whatsoever, size is completely irrelevant to compatibility.

Thanks! but why is it reccommended to use a flashcard instead of the SD card? Will there be slowdowns?
There's a compatibility list if you load the games from the SD card, while flashcarts play everything at cart speed. Personally I haven't needed a flashcart yet, so only opt for one if you want to play something that isn't supported. Compatibility for nds-bootstrap can be found here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1M7MxYQzVhb4604esdvo57a7crSvbGzFIdotLW0bm0Co/edit#gid=0

My information can often be out of date or mistaken when dealing with this project. I've only used it few times to test it out, thought it was an interesting project, then uninstalled it. So I am not always on the up and up with information, to which to say, thank you for correcting me.

No problem, it's alright. Just for future reference, it's simply what patches/fixes are applied that decide compatibility, reason why even games on the same SDK with same ROM size and save type can have varying degrees of functionality.
