What's the better game, Yooka-Laylee or Sea of Thieves?

So with both of these games being made by essentially 2 different versions of Rare, coming out within a year of each other and both having what I'd argue is that same Rare charm, I was curious which title you guys think is overall better. Playtonic's Yooka-Laylee or Rare's Sea of Thieves? Both titles seem to have the same consensus around them too, showing a lot of promise before release, a competent game was delivered, and yet players were ultimately left disappointed in one way or another despite still having some fun with the games. In regard to my question, I'm only talking about what you think is the better game in terms of more fun, how often you imagine you'd return to it, and other things along those lines. It's not a question of which do you like because say Yooka-Laylee is out for the system that you have, but Sea of Thieves is not.

For some scoring context, here are the metacritic ratings as of this posting:

Sea of Thieves Xbone:
Critics: 70
Users: 5.3

Sea of Thieves PC:
Critics:68
Users: 4.2

Yooka-Lalyee PS4:
Critics: 68
Users: 6.2

Yooka-Lalyee Xbone:
Critics: 73
Users: 5.6

Yooka-Lalyee Switch:
Critics: 75
Users: 7.5

Yooka-Lalyee PC:
Critics: 73
Users: 6.5

Those numbers are pretty similar between the two, so it doesn't seem like there is one clear-cut winner, so I'm curious as to which version of Rare you all think has the better game on their hands, and which of the two devs you look forward more to seeing what they come up with next.

Yooka Laylee actually has a set goal and content laid out for players to get through, while Sea of Thieves...doesn't.

But on the other hand, Yooka Laylee is a generic 3D platformer which can be found anywhere else, and especially done better. Sea of Thieves is a barren game, but it honestly has a great, fun concept behind it. Online multiplayer game where you and your friends can take a pirate ship and steal from others and plunder about? Sign me up. The part where SoT fails, though, is the lack of anything to do after you play for about an hour, and realize there's really not much to it. Yooka was a sort of play it once, not even bother to complete it, and put it down. SoT on the other hand, might actually have me replay it again one day, if they patch in some more stuff to do.

At least Yooka Laylee is a finished game. Not even being sarcastic. At least there's something to do! There's virtually no content in Sea of Thieves! There's a foundation with a lot of potential, and if they would've bothered to populate the game with meaningful things to do, it would've easily been the better game, but as it stands, at least Yooka Laylee gives you a game to play.

Afaik, Yooka-Laylee is a complete game and did exactly what it was created to do and as shown, gotten better on the Switch. Instead of load times, if iirc. People still complained, of course.

From what I hear, people have valid complaints with the lack of content for SOT.

I haven't played either, but from what I've seen, it seems like Sea of Thieves tries to do something new and interesting and doesn't do it so well, while Yooka-Laylee is a Banjo clone that was decent at best. The fact that SoT tried to do something new might make it the more interesting game, actually, rather than just being a Banjo copy.

I've played Yooka-Laylee up to the final boss. I played Sea of Thieves for an hour and decided it was boring.

To be fair, SoT is the kind of game that pretty much requires friends to enjoy. The theme has a lot of appeal, but even if I could get a group together to play it, I can't help but wonder if we would have more fun playing something else. The lack of any sort of progression leaves a lot to be desired. Some games like sandbox games (e.g. Minecraft) make up for little/no progression by providing something that has sentimental significance. Building your own awesome castle is reward in-and-of itself. The same cannot be said about Sea of Thieves. There just isn't much to get out of it.

People were disappointed in Yooka-Laylee because they had high expectations, but it is complete, filled with collectibles, and fulfills its purpose. I actually enjoyed playing it. It's not the best platformer I've ever played, but I would call it "good", which is a notch better than the "decent" that people usually give it. If you like platformers with collectibles, there's fun to be have in Yooka-Laylee and you should enjoy playing through it. I feel as though Sea of Thieves, on the other hand, leaves a lot to be desired even if you really like the idea of being a pirate crew with a few friends.

It's hard to compare games of very different genres. But for me, the choice is pretty clear. Yooka-Laylee kept me interested for 15+ hours, whereas SoT couldn't make it past an hour or two.

Mechanically, Sea of Thieves is far superior. It's a beautiful game with a nice aesthetic and super fun boat controls. Characters control well, aside from swords, and it's a very fun and streamlined experienced.
Buut it also has nothing to really do. Most people could (and probably should) just use the gamepass free trial to get their fill of the game. Rare's roadmap is also incredibly sparse and makes it seem like they've just got Jim and an intern working on new content, while the rest are in Hawaii or something.

Yooka Laylee was a great idea ruined by poor execution. There's not really any reason i'd ever play it over Banjo Kazooie/Tooie because it just feels like a bland ripoff. Most characters are boring, worlds are shoved full of dull and uninteresting characters and repetition. Level design is abysmal and uninspired overall. It lost all of the Rare charm of BK.

Even with no content, Sea of Thieves is the clear winner. They have a base, and it works. That's more than Yooka Laylee can say.
