Nintendo Is Working With Startups For New Switch Ideas

nintendo switch x scrum ventures.JPG

The Big N has started an unlikely partnership to find new ideas for the Switch. The video game giant is partnering with San Francisco-based Scrum Ventures to find startups "working on new ways to play or use the Japanese company’s hit gaming console, the Switch".

The program, named Nintendo Switch + Tech and managed by Scrum Ventures, seeks to find technologies that could lead to new experiences on Nintendo Switch. The company says that it welcomes applications for all types of technologies that could be leveraged by Nintendo as the company continues to innovate experiences for Nintendo Switch, ranging from hardware to software.

The program page further adds that "opportunities are wide open for startup teams of all stages, research teams at universities, or technology teams from larger corporations worldwide. A selective group of chosen applicants will have the unique opportunity to talk with the engineers behind Nintendo Switch and demo their technology."

Nintendo has a history of bringing innovative ideas to the video game scene, albeit not always successful. However, this is the first time that the company is reaching out to startups for new ideas.

“We are always exploring ways to evolve entertainment,” Ko Shiota, a senior executive officer at Nintendo, said in a statement. “We look forward to discovering unique technologies that add to the Nintendo Switch experiences through the program managed by Scrum Ventures.”

Do you think the program will yield successful additions to the wildly popular Nintendo Switch? What would you like to see?

I'm really sad to say this, but I think Nintendo is going to continue in its effort to rebrand itself as the company that makes games for kids. They're desperately marketing to the crowd that's increasingly switching to tablets, smartphones and the free to play model, and I just don't see that working out in the long term. It worked well with the Wii because it costed peanuts, it's not going to work so well on the Switch which doesn't. I am sick and tired of companies that are trying to sell me on magical experiences, my magical experience is sitting down on my couch after a long day at work, grabbing a controller and just playing a game for an hour before I need to hit the hay, and Nintendo refuses to market to me even though it's people like me who have the disposable income to buy their stupid innovations. I know the Switch is doing great so far, good for them, but we're a year in and I only sprang for three games so far. They need a recognisable catalogue, although to be fair, I'm pretty much off their boat at this point. I just don't see anything worth picking up between now and Metroid Prime 4, and that's worrisome.
I don't see Sony or MS doing anything to differentiate themselves here. Very few exclusive, quality experiences are getting released any more on any system. One of the only new AAAs I'm picking up this year is Monster Hunter World, mostly everything else has been remakes other than Nintendo and Sony's few offerings.

That's exactly what I want. I don't want them to do anything to differentiate themselves at all, I just want them to make consoles that adequately play games that are fun. Microsoft doesn't even have to release anything remarkable at all - their console is cheap as dirt and plays all of the mainstream third-party titles, there's nothing more one could ask for, the occasional exclusive is a cherry on the top. Same goes with Sony, but they're a little bit more adventurous thanks to PS VR, the cheapest entry point for VR on the market. By comparison Switch gamers just count days between releases, that's not ideal by any stretch of the imagination.

And you can see how well does Xbox does compare to PS4. If Nintendo just go completely mainstream it wouldn't be able to compete against the like of PS4, PC and phone. Not only they are stronger but already very well support, if Nintendo don't different themselves from them and try to do "graphic arm race" then Nintendo will totally going down since they are way too out of touch on this field.

I'm pretty sure all gamers count the days between anticipated releases, that was my point. PS4 gets about the same number of exclusive AAAs this year that Switch does. They may not be spaced out the same, but that's mostly irrelevant.

if they just shat out one of each of their best-selling games every generation nobody would ever complain
They did exactly that with the New Super Mario Bros. series and by the WiiU version a awful lot of people complained about Nintendo always doing the same with 2D Mario.
Yet I agree, they could be abit more lose about there IPs and search for more developer studios to work with to get some entries for there series. They not even announced a Mario Party yet while that's a series which normaly gets more then one entry per generation...

Gimmicks are still better than recycled games/genres.
Recicled games as the new super mario bros series? the mario party ones? whata bout mario kart? They may contain small gimmicks to "differentiate" from each other, but in paper they are still the same games/genres from previous consoles (:

If they continue this route splatoon could end being as repetitive as cod, since splatoon 2 still looks like a glorified dlc for splatoon 1.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

That's funny, I didn't even remotely hint at everybody? No generalization, just a lack of comprehension.
Well sorry, being a non native english speaker can be a bitch sometimes.

I picked Microsoft as an example because they have the most lukewarm reception of the big three, in part due to the fact that the XBox is dead in Japan, it always has been, it just doesn't sell in Asia as a brand. The rest is correct.

You must be joking. There's no way you can look at the release lists of all three and seriously think that.

You missed the mark completely. Mario is the *only* classic franchise Nintendo milks relentlessly and people have a good reason to be sick of the guy. He's the mascot in the true sense of the word, they shove him into everything, including places where he doesn't belong. I eagerly anticipate the release of Super Mario Proctologist, but that's not the kind of consistent release pattern I'm talking about. All Nintendo had to do to revivify the plumber was release a new mainstream Mario title, that being Odyssey, about which critics still continue to rave for reasons incomprehensible to me. More of that, less of everything else, it's not that hard.

I know a new way to play. Lets play off a usb hard drive. and lets play with confidence that our spent time is backed up by letting us copy saves to a encrypted sd card.

Saves being copied to a usb drive was never hacked on the wii u..... People keep asking for tools to dump and restore saves to a different console but no such tool exists.

I like Switch a lot problem is I don't like most of its games... I hope it's not like 3DS they made the awesome resident evil and bam nothing more at its level came out that's why I can't say I ever played on my 3DS which has Gateway.

I hope this time it's not the same just doom and Wolfenstein and nothing more like them coming...

I have Wolfenstein on PC and is so much more better than the last 2 crap Wolfenstein, it's just not better than the old wolfenstein return to the castle, that is one of the best FPS...

I wish if they made games like GTA V even though I never finished it, but would be crazy playing that outside home...

What about table top games like Pac-Man that supported 2 player and the screen flipped for player 2. The Switch could do that on a smaller scale. For example 2 people could play a football game in portrait mode or something simpler like chess, chinese checkers, ect. The Switch also has IR so I don't see why it can't be a giant harmony remote. What about Bluetooth smart lights for that matter? How about a touch enabled Super Mario Maker for 3D Mario games? A touch enabled Mario Paint? A 3D scanner for Minecraft (Joycons support shape detection via IR)? I'll stop now.

I my self would prefer something like GT\Forza in it, GTA V like games, hell even battlefield would be amazing on portable though I only played a few hours on pc or PS4...

I hope simulation games ever appear in it. I don't like super Marios, table like games and whatever, all that games can be played already 4 free and well on any phone\tablet while good games never appear on Android or is kinda pointless since I want my phone to last a week and not 3 hours of battery I need it for important stuff.

I also own a Nvidia Shield tablet but it's getting outdated already and is not really good to bring it to a bar with a big controller... Switch portable with its own controllers is way better.
