Have you noticed when you minimize the icon size to the smallest on HOME Menu, the maximum allotted slot is 360? Maybe that ties in with the badge limit if you try maxing 3DS and DSi titles. I think there's a GUI rendering issue in there, too if we want to break it.

I've never counted all the slots, I've always kept all my games in folders using up minimal space on the overall main menu, but what you say doesn't surprise me. The Wii U behaves kinda similarly, if you fill up all the pages or close to all the pages with games, more pages will appear on the Wii U. The amount of allotted space has never been the issue for either system especially considering we can create folders to store more things in, 300 is just some programmed limit pertaining to the 3DS titles specifically that the badges seem to be tied to as well. And as we know, we can install well beyond 300 titles, and they're all actually there on the 3DS, we can access and launch them through various HB apps that can launch games, but the programmed limit just pertains to what actually shows up on the main menu. One would think that theoretically this could be changed for CFW, but I understand, far easier said than done.

the ps3 has a limit with themes, just like with the 3ds. I don't know if it's due to stability or not. however, you can seemingly install as many games as you want. though, the system might crash on you if you have too much going on. I'm thinking that's the reason for the limit on the 3ds and the wii u. I don't think it's necessarily to restrict the user. I can tell you with about 200 games installed on a 128GB micro sd card, my system suffers from stability problems especially when scrolling through the games. however, that could be due to having a slow micro sd card or the fact that it's several years old. the point being that it's sluggish, but only in the home menu. running a game - it's fine.

Is this for your 3DS system? If so, is your micro SD formatted with 32 KB cluster size?

In case you have it at 32 KB, you may be able to decrease HOME Menu loading times with 64 KB cluster. This does come with the double edge in possibly breaking AGB_FIRM and nds-bootstrap with graphical glitches (it doesn't happen for everyone with 128GB and up).

If you plan to change to 64 KB, don't use MiniTool Partition's no reformatting + quick 32 KB > 64 KB allocation changer. Copy everything off first, reformat to FAT32 + 64 KB cluster, put a few GBA Virtual Console titles and TWLoader, check for graphical glitches, and then copy everything back on if these check out.

Edit - You can check and read my write-up in signature if that piques your interest.

That may have been an issue with your SD card, I'm right at the 300 title limit on a 200GB Micro SD card (N3DS XL), and I have no issue with speed/scrolling. Granted I keep my games organized in folders so that the main screen doesn't have a whole lot populating it, so that may be why. But having that many games alone will not neccesarily slow your system down when you scroll through your games, and could be based on your sd card and/or how you have or haven't organized your games, it would stand to reason that since games packed in folders don't need to show up until you enter a folder that could be the reason why I have no real speed or stability issue when scrolling through the main menu.

You know, I wonder if anyone has thought of making an application that allows you to view all of your games, and start them from that menu. It could have a similar theme system, but that isn't really necessary imo

I do have my games in folders. I've had it seemingly freeze on the home screen a few times, and this was outside of a folder. I don't recall this issue when using the system without a micro sd card plugged in.

My guess would be its an issue with the card. A higher class card would likely do the trick, just make sure if you do that, that you get your card at a brick and mortar store, buying SD cards from questionable online retailers is just asking to get screwed in one way or another.

Apart from the installed-titles view of the usual title managers, there are none I know of - that's what I was "asking for" when I mentioned "an app list with cache" earlier :)

I think this micro sd card was purchased from newegg. I've been having a lot of problems with them recently like the fact that they sold me a computer that's sluggish as hell on the internet. I didn't expect the best computer in the world, but I at least expected it to be able to perform mundane tasks relatively well. I also bought a flash drive from them, which never arrived, and now I'm getting the run around with their claims department. I might as well take my business to best buy. they've always been good. they package my amiibos up very nicely unlike amazon which just crams them into a box.

Hmmm, I'm sure with all of the info out there, it wouldn't really be too hard to make such an app. At least if the person had experience making homebrew 3ds applications.

Watch out for newegg. It's not like what it used to be when they started flooding with no name Chinese and Taiwanese branded flash memories. ie, "TOP RAM" being one of the biggest offender, dunno if that's still around. If you're looking for a good micro SDXC deal later down the line (ie, Switch), check my other signature. I know it's on eBay and the auction looks iffy with that meh picture, but it's legit.

Well we shouldn't say 300 icon limit exactly either. Because that doesn't take into account the 40 additional DSi icons we can load up the screen with as well, folders don't seem to count toward the limit either. And as mentioned you can place multiples of badges with it still only counting as one badge, so you can have well beyond 300 tiles filled on the Home Menu and within folders on the Home Menu (hell I'm hovering right around 350 total icons with all my titles, DSi titles/DS game forwarders, folders, and a few multiple badges) Yet stupidly, even if I get rid of all 40 of my DS icons, I still wouldn't be able to add any more 3DS games or badges at this point (and have them all appear on the home menu), which is evidence that the 300 limit they implemented was a soft number, we could probably go upwards of 400 tiles without having any real slowdown on the menu, I don't really experience slowdown as it is (though I do most have everything organized neatly into about 10 folders or so).

So just to confirm, you can have 340 games on a 3DS at once? 40 DS/DSiWare titles, and 300 of everything else? I've been putting a list of games together that I want for a modded 3DS, and I've heard lots of conflicting thoughts on whether or not the 40 DS games just count in their own 40 game limit, or if they also count to the 300 game 3DS software limit as well.

Yes, this is correct. Keep in mind, the space allotted for digital DS games on the 3DS is very small, so you may be able to fit a few of your favorite DSiware in there, but if you really want to hit that 40 title limit, then most DS titles will have to be forwarders to your favorite DS games on your flashcard (assuming you have a DS flashcard in at all times while all your 3DS content is completely digital, this is how I've always done things in my 3DS to make the most of it).

Oh man. I didn't realize the on-board storage for the 3DS was so small. If you hadn't told me that, I would've had a very rude awakening when I tried to mod my system, haha. Would you be willing to answer two more questions for me?

The first one is, what DS flashcard would you recommend I get? My second question is something I've searched long and hard for, but could never find a clear answer to. Do homebrew applications count toward the 3DS game limit?

The 3DS has a built in DS emulator, at least in the "newer" models. Just get multiple MicroSD cards and don't complicate things. I don't even know 300 memorable games from over the last 20 years so why is this retard even posing a question?

Believe it or not, I have a list of exactly 340 titles that I'd love to have on a modded 3DS. I prioritize a clean, user friendly, and nice looking menu/UI over anything else, so that's why I'm not interested in things like Twilight Menu or multiple SD Cards. It's not the end of the world for me to have to remove some titles from my line-up to make room for some homebrew applications. I was just looking to see exactly how many I'd have to part with first. I wouldn't want to remove an unnecessary amount of my games, just to find out that I could've had them after all. I know that most users don't particularly care about how user friendly or nice their menu or UI is, or making sure all their VC/DS titles have a forwarder, but I'm in that 1% who does. I hope that makes sense.
