Hello guys! I finally made my decision and chosed to buy a Nintendo Switch instead of a PS4! :D

I've been following the progress about the Nintendo Switch Homebrew and hacking scene in this forum for many months and I'm amazed how fast and far the progress have been! :)

I have ordered the Nintendo Switch, and hopefully it will be below 4.1.0 but I have some questions since I'm a bit sceptic to the update thingy...

1. Let say that I will receive a Nintendo Switch with firmware 4.1.0. Will my firmware be automatically updated if I put a cartridge in (Super Mario Odyssey or Skyrim) to the latest firmware? I've read that the firmware can or will be updated even though you are fully offline, is that true? Is there anything we can do about it to prevent it from auto update or are we forced to update to, for instance, firmware 5.x??

2. Another question that came up my mind is that, let say that this time my Nintendo Switch will be in firmware 3.0.0 and I buy Rocket league or Mario Kart (or other game that requires a high firmware), but even though that there is a new updates would it still be possible for me to play the game without updating the firmware? Or do I HAVE to update the firmware in order to play the game? (The cartridge will force updating the firmware).

Thank you in advance! :)

First, any FW is now hackable, 4.1.0 or below is still easier though. Updates depend on the cartridge, as you said, see here: http://nswdb.com
But will the firmware update automatically update to the latest firmware when we play games from cartridges?
Also can't we prevent that stuff? :(
I remember when I install CFW on my 2DS, I blocked the internet thingy update, using a special DNS. Is there an alternative way on the switch? :)
I don't want lose chance of having a CFW when it's released on the switch, for some update :(

The minimum firmware required for the game to run will be installed, if it isn't the currently installed version. The lower the firmware version, the sooner you get CFW.

Don't set wifi. Be in airplane mode.

Ahh I see, but let say that my firmware is on 3.x and I buy sonic forces that requires 4.0.0, will it update to 4.0.0 or to the latest firmware which is 5.x?? :)
Sorry for these nooby question, I just don't want firmware 5.x :(

Will that work? I've read that the cartridge (depending on which firmware it requires) will automatically update even though you don't have an internet connection :/

Keep your wifi off, if you're paranoid about updating to the latest firmware. Nintendo doesn't have a magic way to update your Switch to the latest firmware, if you have your wifi off.

Currently no games that have 5.0+ exist, so you don't have to worry about cartridge updates.
But that won't last more than a couple months, and Nintendo do change out the firmware on the carts they are manufacturing so even older games can come with 5.0+ soon.

Switch games can contain the update and to play the game you will need to install the update.

Things might change when CFW comes out.

Assuming that we are talking about a physical copy of Sonic Forces, and it has a 4.0.0 update on the cartridge, then it would update to 4.0.0, and not to 5.x, assuming that you are not connected to the internet. However, if it is a digital copy, then you will need the latest firmware in order to access the internet.

Yes, if, in your example, your Switch is on firmware 3.x, and you have a cartridge that has higher than 3.x on it, you will be required to install the update in order to run the game, and it won't matter if you have an internet connection or not.
