Gaming Perfection: The Legend of Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon

Here at GBAtemp, we love video games. And that means we play a lot of them, be it good or bad. But sometimes, you find a shining gem which stands out from all others, revolutionizing the industry and shaping how games will be made for the following decade. These games are perfection, and nothing less, which is why they should be recognized for their achievements. That’s why I’m here today to discuss one of the best video games ever, from a franchise we all know and love: The Legend of Zelda.

Nintendo has brought us many a good Zelda adventure, throughout the series’ more than 30 years of existence. Many, many fans cherish the franchise, with such entries like A Link to the Past, or Ocarina of Time, and the recent Breath of the Wild. Well, let me be frank with you, readers, those games are trash. Yes, absolute garbage, and every Zelda game you hold dear is a flaming dumpster fire. Let’s get real, people, the best LOZ game wasn’t even made by Nintendo. What’s that? You can’t think of what I mean? Well, dear reader...it’s time to talk about one of the greatest games of all time.

Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon is for certain, one of the most magnificent games you will ever play. It has beautifully drawn animations, stellar voice acting, and revolutionary gameplay--gameplay that feels very challenging--it could be considered as the Dark Souls of Philips CDI adventure games. These assertions are fact--pure, unchallengeable fact.

Perhaps some of you are typing furiously in order to disagree with me. Just hold on, take slow deep breaths while you cuddle that Link plushie, and I’ll explain the ways that this game is so amazing and flawless.

Back in 1993, when Nintendo was still a relevant company, and still made creative, popular, and interesting things, like the Power Glove and Super Scope, they decided to lend out the license to the Legend of Zelda franchise. Thus, it fell to the hands of Philips Media to take the reigns and create a brand new Zelda adventure, one that would take the world by storm. Luckily, Nintendo went with Philips over their competitor Sony, as a Nintendo-PlayStation partnership would have resulted in absolutely nothing positive for the gaming industry, and likely a terrible game. What we got out of this collaboration was The Wand of Gamelon, and since that day, gaming was never the same.

Still a better love story than Twilight.
Though the story is now considered non-canon by Nintendo, we can see that this is because they couldn’t dream of writing anything remotely as good as this epic adventure. It starts off with the king of Hyrule needing to journey off to the mystical world of Gamelon. But alas, he goes missing, and as in typical hero fashion, Link must save him. Except he goes missing too! In a creative twist, we must play as Zelda, who is far more interesting than Link, as the intro cutscene characterizes her to the point of bringing tears to our eyes. The art here is drawn so well and animated so painstakingly, that you could mistake it for Disney, with the emotion that it evokes. The story is so strongly written, telling us a tale of loss and strength, of what it means to be a hero! These scenes are so integral, that they've inspired all future video games to ever exist, as nowadays video games commonly have story cutscenes, clearly in an attempt to rip this game off. Some may say the story is weak, but that’s only because they haven’t spent hours painstakingly watching every frame of animation. Only then will you be able to understand the Shakespearean levels of drama and narrative.

The CDi out-performed the Super Nintendo in every way, which is clear to see by just how beautiful the graphics are. The Wind Waker's artstyle can't even compare to the might of Wand of Gamelon's breathtaking visuals. You might say that enemies look badly or lazily drawn, but that’s only because it’s meant to look that way! This game has no negative qualities, of course, so that means the developers made their artwork appear to be terrible on purpose, so that our expectations would be mistakenly lowered, only to have our minds blown by this very revelation.

Of course, what would a game be without gameplay? Luckily, we are provided with the best gameplay the series will ever have. The style is slightly similar to Zelda II, the most well-known and beloved entry prior to this. However, this takes the foundations laid by that game, and builds upon it in every way. Even the best Mario games cannot hope to achieve such platforming greatness that this 2D Zelda game offers, with its amazing level design. It might confuse lesser players, and they may complain about difficulty, but you can look them in the eye, and tell them to "git gud", which will reveal to them the error of their ways.

So, in total, The Legend of Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon far surpasses any other game out there, except for maybe Sonic 06. This is the true pinnacle of gaming, what all other games should strive to be. That is why we should take this day to talk about how wonderful this game is, and celebrate its achievements. After all, it's better than that crappy 7/10 other Zelda game. I'm glad you all understand now. Thank you so much for reading.

Word on the streets is that Nintendo purchased license to these CDi titles and will be announcing at e3 that they'll be available on the Nintendo switch mini eShop in 2030
If ninty really did release these at a reasonable price ($2) I would get them.

The shock and horror they would elicit from friends and family would be well worth the price.

Wow, chary really has a knack for finding these hidden gems around this time every year. First she introduced us to the superb gameplay of sonic 06, and now she's gone and found a game with the best cutscenes and story I've ever seen! Can't wait to see what hidden gem you find next time!

Not sure if you were trying to make a funny, or if you've never played a Zelda game before. ;)
I haven't played a Zelda game - but I know enough that you're the little elf Zelda guy with the green hat.
