PlayStation VR gets permanent price drop

If you've been wanting to join the VR bandwagon, you might be interested to know that PlayStation is lowering the cost of their VR headsets worldwide on March 29th (April 2nd for Australia and New Zealand). The RRP will be lowering from the original launch price of $399/€399 and will now cost $299/€299. This entry-level bundle will come with the PlayStation VR headset, along with the PlayStation Camera, and the pack-in VR game PlayStation VR Worlds. Two other bundles are following suit and dropping in price by $100, including the Doom VFR (comes with Doom VFR and a game demo disc as well, now for $299) and Skyrim VR (comes with Skyrim VR, a demo disc, and two PlayStation move controllers now for $349) bundles. PlayStation VR originally launched in October 2016, and now currently has over 300 games published on the platform.

bought one, came with RE, Robinson Game, both were neat, installed the VR mission for Star Wars, whilst very cool, and some of the demo games are neat, gave me really bad headaches even in short bursts, and kids thought was cool but gimmicky and still rather play on Xbox or switch, so passed it onto next person, glad tried it, and whilst isnt for everyone, the lack of games coming out this year as well helped me choose not to keep it, combined with fact need to drop 50+ on Move controllers now to get full experience

I too find myself in the £50 or you better have some serious fun times happening within it crowd.

I'll keep saying it. VR gaming is not the future.
Is that like someone playing battlezone in 1980 would have said 3d is not the way, and for the next 15 or so years they were probably correct.

I certainly don't think people not having such things are missing out by not having such things at this very moment in time, however how anybody generally aware of games can not see the potential in it I do not know.

back in 80s Battlezone was super cool, neat depth, perspective etc, I had a cabinet before moving to UK, fun game and was simple and immersive, playing the latest version of battlezone was fun, but still felt more like a tech demo, without too much substance to game play, the VR headset needs to be wireless, as presently the amount of wires, addons plugged into a PS4 is crazy mess, especially with kids, the screen itself is very low end res, maybe if hooked up to a ps pro it looks better? 3d movies at home was a fad with the tvs etc, and unless price comes down to make it way more accessible to masses, it will always wont be the next big time IMO, and you loose the ability to play locally together as well

can someone tell me if those VR headset are really that much better than those cheap VR headset that requires a smartphone?

Smartphone VR only has 3 degrees of freedom. Yaw, pitch, and roll. Just rotation from the smartphone's IMU (gyro), so you can look around but your head can't move from its spot.

PSVR and the modern PC headsets have 6 degrees of freedom, rotation from an IMU and position in 3 dimensions via a camera or IR system, so where you move and how you orient your head or controllers within the tracking space are where they are in VR.

6DOF is better because leaning in or moving around when only using 3DOF can make people nauseous since we're wired to expect the world around us to move accordingly. And with a large enough tracking space you can physically walk around in a game.

Hold on. There are over 300 PSVR games available?
Yeah but most of them are Fruit Ninja clones.

Well, Gran Turismo Sport can be played without the PSVR as it's a stand alone game with a VR mode. I'm not sure about other games, but in "threatre" mode you get the game screen in a virtual plain and you can look around, but the game doesn't respond to the movement.
Well that's just lame.

VR is still too expensive for the limited content it offers home owners at the moment, and there's not enough support for the VR peripherals to warrant buying them.

I won a bundle from Taco Bell and after using it for about a week, it sat and collected dust until I eventually sold it. The two worst things for me was that it was like watching everything through a screen door, and the camera/tracking drifting was insanely terrible. That and like most others have said, most VR "games" are nothing more than exaggerated tech-demos.

"I'll pay $50 for a VR headset" is a lot like saying "I'll pay at most $500 for a car." Y'all should know better, you get the quality you pay for.

As for the price drop, it's probably because Sony knows gen2 PC HMDs are just around the corner. Pimax is said to be shipping April-May.

Hold on. There are over 300 PSVR games available?
I just counted SteamVR games. 2,900 available for Vive alone.

I'll keep saying it. VR gaming is not the future. This just proves it... again.

I'll wait until it costs something like $50 USD. Won't pay anything more than that.

Which is why "bandwagon" comes off as an exaggerated word. This candy cane I'm eating is more interesting than a VR system, but that's just me.
