Hey, I haven't updated my gateway for about a year and I have an issue.

I want to play bravely second but believe I need online capabilities to access the village building/we portion of the game. Is there any work around or solution as I can't update emunand to current version at present.

Gateway isn't really recommended anymore, I'd suggest you just hack your sysnand and not have to use emunands. Once you have a fully updated sysnand, then you won't have to deal with how old gateway is. You may want to check out a certain open-source eShop clone, if you wish to replace your Gateway.

You can start hacking at 3ds.hacks.guide. Alternately, if you have A9LH (I've never used a Gateway myself, due to costs, so idk exactly how they work), follow 3ds.hacks.guide/a9lh-to-b9s. However, I recall Gateway emunands not being able to be backed up & restored to sysnand or something like that, so you might want to use something like Checkpoint to backup your saves first. I've also heard that Gateway removes Boot9Strap (think modern A9LH) if you try to boot it, so proceed with caution.

Before you do any of the above, backup your save game so you can import it on the installed version after you can't access Gateway anymore. See here: https://gbatemp.net/threads/importing-gateway-saves-to-cia-games.425743/
You can use FBI.3ds to install JKSM.cia (get them from their github repos). Just export your save games to start with, you can install the games and import the saves later (keep the JKSM folder safe on your computer after exporting them)

There is a way to update GW to a 11.6 frankenfirm, it's only a partial update but it's enough to get online working. I don't recommend it though, it seems to work fine but you never know if there are some weird crashes or other issues that are actually being caused by the frankenfirm.
I suggest exporting your saves beforehand if you're going to move to CFW, since you need access to GW to export them so they can be used with .cia games, and once you update the system and get rid of emuNAND that becomes a lot harder.
Instead of doing it manually like @Quantumcat mentioned, you can use GWSE which automates the process so you don't have to manually rename saves: https://gbatemp.net/threads/gateway-save-export-helper.465503/
My post there (post #2) has a slightly quicker/easier to use version using a modded JKSM, and comes with instructions on use.
Don't play it, it's a piece of crap. The first was amazing, just replay that.
Eh the first one was very lazily made. I don't fancy having to replay the game like 5 times to get the best ending.

Gateway emuNAND can be moved to sysNAND just fine (at least as long as CFW is installed), he can simply move it over when the guide tells him to do so.

Once he sets up CFW he can't use the Gateway card very easily. Better to extract the save files now, while it is easy, and then you don't need the card again ever.
I thought you were joking but regardless, OP doesn't even indicate he had started the game to begin with. I'd hope backing up your saves would be obvious though. It's a good idea to keep regular backups of everything, after all.
