That's weird.. Some of you can't play but others still can.. I am able to play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe online still.. I never updated it.. Still on 4.1.0.
@Hayro: What version of Splatoon 2 are you running? Newest version of S2 is 2.3.2. Perhaps you didn't update it?

@JustBrandonT: MK8D newest version is 1.4.0. Perhaps your MK8D is somehow updated (version on cart if you bought it later)?

Hmm.. My version is 1.4.0 when I press "Option" plus button on it. Weird. I also didn't buy it from a cart. I bought it digitally from the eShop (few weeks ago) and it lives on my SD card.

When you download from the eShop it downloads the newest available version and 1.4.0 has been out for MK8D for a while, so that makes sense. If you just recently purchased it, then you've always had version 1.4.0 of MK8D.

Is it normal that I can't play any cart based games without updating after deleting all non-save data in recovery mode? Note that I'm on 4.1.0. Followed the "Blocking Updates" guide but it seems to have fucked me over more than I was originally, unless I followed it wrong.

It's normal for some games, not most.

I'm on 2.3.1 but when I want to update the game, it asks me to update the console first.
I guess I wasn't fast enough to grab the game update right?

If the cart previously had an update, then the update has been deleted along with the 'non-save' data. Your account however knows that you have the 'rights' to an update, and will now always expect that update to be installed before running the game.

You will probably be able to play cart games native from a new profile, you may have to factory reset the entire Switch and create a new profile to play any of those carts again.

Also remember that any digital purchases you have/will delete will also be gone completely untill you update to 5.0.0, you can no longer download anything at all from e-shop on 4.1.0.

Yeah, newest Splatoon 2 update is 2.3.2 and as of Friday morning ET, you could no longer download game updates without 5.0 sadly.

> Tfw people are surprised online features don't work on lower firmwares

Ninty's just gonna keep pushing software updates, 4.x ain't gonna have access to everything forever and 5.x likely won't be cracked for a while. If you're not gonna update, don't buy from the eShop if you can help it, period.

So I read from another site that you can 'get around' the 'must update system firmware in order to download this title' message by somehow blocking the ninty DNS and doing a system recovery. (or some such) I haven't tried it but i'm in that position with a 4.0 fw based game giving me that message after I bought it yesterday. Am I out of luck, or there is a way around it?
Logged into the www. eshop page, where the box is to purchase the game, already shows "downloaded", but for sure it's not. As soon as the purchase was made and I exited eshop, it gave me that message. There's no icon w/download progress status on the main screen area or anything.

Same boat, no way around it unfortunetley. Purcahsed Blossom Kingdom, dying to play it. Changing the DNS will only block the system update, however doing that will also prevent access to the eShop.

The point of this post wasn't to let people know the already public information that you need to be on the newest firmware to download game updates/etc. This post was to specifically inform people that the 4.1->5.0 update grace period where you could still download game updates/software on 4.1 (not the newest firmware anymore at the time) had ended so people who were still thinking about spending money to download games they didn't have wouldn't get burned.

There was a 3-4 day long grace period where we could still purchase software/download updates on 4.1 AFTER 5.0 dropped, so that was useful information. It allowed people (me included) to make some last minute eShop purchases and download the last updates we could grab for online games (like Splatoon 2 on 2.3.2). It may not be for long before another game updates drops, but I for one am thankful to get a few more days/weeks of play out of Splatoon 2 before settling in for the long CFW release wait on 4.1.

(Also a somewhat unprecedented thing that is currently happening on the Switch: Nintendo is allowing eShop access and purchases on lower firmwares, at least 4.1, but requiring the newest firmware to actually download any purchases/updates. This is somewhat devious because it could entice someone who is trying to not update but wants to buy something on the eShop be forced to update to access their purchase instead of counting any such money wasted as a loss and staying on their lower firmware. We don't know if Nintendo will leave eShop access open for lower firmwares, but this is different from the past because usually, once Nintendo locks out access for things like downloading demos/game updates, they lock out eShop access as well.)

Just update to 5.0 then, stop waiting for hax that will never release...

Are you trying to say that 4.1 CFW will never come out? We already have seen teams that do release their work show TrustZone exploitation on FW 4.1, so CFW for pretty much all firmwares below 5.0 will likely be coming eventually. ReSwitched is currently working on their bootrom exploit implementation as well, so I bet we will definitely see some progress/releases on more firmwares in the near future (at least some time during 2018).

The teams wait so long, that we can't enjoy it on current firmware without Nintendo patching shit up like 5.0.0 did. I can't NOT play Splatoon 2, so hacks can wait in my eyes. Especially now that 4.1.x will be the last hackable firmware for a while, it's like 4.5 on the 3DS all over again.

Guys, the point of the post wasn't some "omg no online sob"

The point was unlike previous grace periods between a new FW and eshop block, this time Nintendo were allowing purchases but not the actual download.

This was not like previous grace periods where a purchase and download could still be made while eshop access was still available.

The fact this happened, with no warnings, on the day that Kirby dropped, meant potential purchases of £50 wasted. Or that folks would be forced to update to justify lost money and leave our last exploitable FW.

While it might not have affected you both personally doesn't mean we shouldn't think of the community we participate in :)

Thanks @Ichii Giki :)

What I was trying to say was that you should never buy from the eShop if you're planning to not update. You'll eventually lose access to those games. People who wanted Kirby but planned to not update should've bought a physical copy, as being barred from the eShop was inevitable.

You don't lose access to those games if you backup your SD card data and don't delete your games. Buying from the eShop and not wanting to update is more difficult, but not impossible. I have been going all digital pretty much on the Switch so far and plan to continue to do so as much as possible (or if things go the way of the 3DS, install rips of my purchased carts to play them more easily, but we shall have to wait and see what happens there.).

Even if you have access to the eshop.

Your game will only download if you update FW to 5.0.

Same for previously purchased software, don't delete unless you're willing to update to get it back.

You can purchase/add funds, you cannot download though.

I tried by buying a £2.00 game, this was the result. Lucky I did as I only tested because I was going to buy Kirby but didn't want to waste £50 if it didn't work.
wasnt this true for wii u and 3ds too?

Not exactly. On the Wii U/3DS, when online access was locked out for older firmwares, eShop access went with it. On the Switch right now with 4.1, this is the first time we've seen eShop access left open for an older firmware after closing out downloads of new software/game updates.
