Nintendo Zones are public hotspots accessible at select locations that provide free internet for 3DS owners. They also allow players to receive exclusive content and StreetPass data from up to six other 3DS owners who passed by the same hotspot.

As all things come to an end sooner or later, Nintendo announced that its shutting down all Nintendo Zones in Europe on March 28th, 2018, without providing a reason.

Important information: the Nintendo Zone service will be discontinued in Europe on Wednesday, March 28th 2018. Thank you for using the Nintendo Zone service.

Did you use the Nintendo Zone service? Will you miss it?

They were great like 4 years ago. With the streetpass relay. But the last 3 years has been nothing. So I wont miss it. As It was already lost like 3 years ago ^^

Never used them either tbh.

In all honesty, I barely touched it since 2012.
Regretted getting it on launch.
Wow you've missed out on loads of games then.

Switch doesn't need it because the browser can be used to sign in to those networks while the 3ds couldnt
Source? Why would the 3DS browser not be able to sign in?

Strange, they are currently still using NZ in German Gamestops for legendary Pokemon distributions. They have to come up with sth else next month then...

None of them really interest me, KH3D was annoying due to the "drop" mechanism.
Kid Icarus was amazing but lacks dual analog support.
Pokemon shmokemon.
Mario Party was meh, Smash is better played on a console.

I'm sorry, 3DS barely had anything that interests me.

Nintendo Zone has been down in the US for 2 years
Yes and no, the app with the mini website was closed*, but the actual autoconnecting networks and the indirect streetpass service that comes with them still work fine

* fun fact: in Italy instead they simply were never really updated 2014-2015 until the "International Streetpass Week" reboot

Here, ANY form of streetpass started really dying down after late 2015: I used to drive around every McDonalds even 60 km from my home, a couple of months ago I came back to the nearest one with a 3DS (which I hadn't used in multiple months) and I still didn't get 6 Miis, meaning there weren't 6 unique visitors in the meanwhile!!
Never mind direct streetpass in the supermarket/big cities: that only really worked in computer engineering classes, and even the "largest human Nintendo Zone ever" isn't too reliable for the 100 connections/24 hours achievement...

Guess I should try befriending the boss at my local Mcdonalds ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I remember the good ol' days when I watched episodes of Pokemon at McDonalds using Nintendo Zone, while eating a great (but unhealthy) breakfast. I also miss the Nintendo Video app, I LOVED watching Dinosaur Office when I got my first 3DS XL back in 2012. Now things are starting to change...
Dinosaur Office was never available here, I had to watch it on CollegeHumor and see that "available on 3DS" blurb taunting me every time.
There were some other neat shorts though.
Nintendo Zone was kind of useless anyway. But I hope that doesn't mean homepass will stop working.
never used it, i didnt even know they provided internet xD

or maybe theyll convert nintendpo zone for switch instead of 3ds :)
They didn't really. They just partnered with some companies that were already running hotspots to allow the 3DS to auto connect to the hotspots (and bypass any login portals) while providing some extra content on the 3DS like trailers. The extra content wasn't anything special and you could get it by simply changing the name of your wifi to one of the recognized ones so I'm not sure why they made it limited to only certain locations.

Mario Party The Top 100 is pretty good.
Ace Attorney is great as always.
Bravely series is good.
And Mario Kart 7 was the best Mario Kart to date at the time. I couldn't go back to it now that Mario Kart 8 exists, but I had a lot of fun with it at the time.
And there are plenty of great 3rd party games depending on what you're into.
no reason it won't work. it'll continue to work for as long as people use it. i use a raspberry pi, but i'm sure there's a guide somewhere...
It still relies on Nintendo's servers actually storing the StreetPass hits, so sooner or later it'll stop working. Hopefully we'll have unofficial servers by then.

I think Dinosaur Office must have been US only. We had some other shorts I didn't recognize but they were pretty neat.
