I recommend reading this:

TechSpot Series:
Why Building a Gaming PC Right Now Is a Bad Idea
2017 was an exciting year for PC hardware but it wasn't all roses. The warning signs we saw are painting more difficult in 2018. In this 3-part series we discuss why building a new gaming PC is not a great idea at the moment, or at the very least, it's going to come at great expense.

I also recommend waiting a bit, prices are crazy right now, unless you're willing to buy used for the time being.

I recommend buying a phat PS3 and softmodding for the ultimate Playstation experience. You can find one for $50 or even less if you search hard enough.

As for Dolphin you don't need a state of the art computer. I had a $140 HP i5 4gb ddr3 workstation running Gamecube games flawlessly. Wii games not so much but seriously how many Wii games are you going to be playing?

The ultimate experience? So it can run PS2 games at 4k and force 60fps in some games?

Phats are more likely to YLOD. The CECHA01 and CECHB01s, while having 99% PS2 hardware BC are the worst offenders. If you can get one cheap, might be worth it, but still they tend to fail.

The early slims are the best for reliability while still working with CFW. CECH-20xxA
CECH-21xxA (I've heard the latter is best.)

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

No they can't other than upscaling, there is no difference.

But if you want to rely on PCSX2, expect tweaking and issues to get a lot of games compatibility working.

PCSX2 is known for having compatibility issues with many games and can be a pain to deal with if you enjoy the vast library of Playstation 2 games. The early PS3 slims I agree are the best but are hard to come by. I recommended the fat because not only are they cheaper but all are capable of being soft modded as of January 2018 because Sony has not patched the firmware.

If by "many games" you mean 5% of the library, sure. The other 95% are completely playable, even if some tweaks are needed for a few of them. PCSX2 has come a long way over the years, most games play just fine without any modification to the settings.

PS3's also aren't perfect, even official BC ones have issues with some games (rare as it is) and non-BC PS3s are even worse off than PCSX2's compatibility.

What type of stuff should I look for? I have never built a PC, but playing the PS2 and gamecube with enhanced graphics sounds very enticing.

Buy Game Cube and PS2 Consoles. They are incredibly cheaper than build a PC, silly. Unless, you want those emulators for 4k and 1080p.

Enjoy compatibility issues but honestly you should just be buying used consoles. Right now hardware for PCs is pretty high in price (RAM, GPUs, SSDs) due to a mix of things, in quite a few cases it's actually just as cheap to buy pre-made than to buy your parts (and pirateOS).

Just get a Wii and mod it , that will take care of EVERYTHING GC and pretty much Nintendo up to the Wii, as well as almost all old-schoojl stuff. I still have mine like this and it's wonderful, one HDD on the Wii handles everything, wonderful!

As for the PS2 you *can* go the PC route, or you can just buy a PS2 (preferably pre-modded) will be much cheaper than the PC, but obviously you won't be able to scale it up, however you'll probably be okay with that if you knew how annoying going through the compatibility issues in a lot of games can be.

If you prefer portable but were just compromising, honestly a PSP-2000 will get you everything *except* the PS2/GC emulation, but quite a few games are ported to PS2 on it. This worked great for me for years til I messed the screen up.

I'd say get a Wii U. It has an hdmi. Unless you're into competitive melee where frames matter, gamecube games work great.

I honestly haven't modded my Wii U but probably should. If it's anywhere near the Wii level of mod-and-forget throw all your games onto an external HDD and plug it in, then hell yeah.

It's pretty much on par with Wii in terms of hacking, and for emulators, they are far more accurate and run full speed (many of them anyways). Game backups on an HDD is a nice touch.
