legendary-campaign-169-en.jpg

"2018 Will Be Legendary!"
Recently, The Pokémon Company put up an announcement on their website [prebreak]1[/prebreak](which when clicked redirects to another website), announcing the "Year of Legendary Pokémon". It is supposedly going to be a yearlong event that includes Legendary Pokémon Distributions, activities, and more!
This event will be spread across all of The Pokémon Company's currently supported media and games.
  • Handheld games: monthly legendary distributions at select partners
  • Trading cards: new sets focused on Legendary Pokémon in 2018
  • Mobile Games: Shuffle will have Dialga / Palkia stages, GO will have promotions
  • TV: monthly movies featuring legendaries on the Pokémon TV app
For the monthly Legendary Pokémon Distribution, this is the current schedule:
  • February – Dialga or Palkia in GAME in the UK & Gamestop in the US
  • March – Regigigas or Heatran
  • April – Raikou or Entei
  • May – Xerneas or Yveltal
  • June – Shiny Zygarde
  • July – Tornadus or Thundurus
  • August – Kyogre or Groudon
  • September – Latios or Latias
  • October – Reshiram or Zekrom
  • November – Ho-Oh or Lugia
It is to be noted that in the artwork at the top of this post, there are no Mythical Pokémon or either of the Mews to be seen.

(It's worth noting that the link at the bottom of my source goes to the British site. If you live in the US, you'll want to go to https://www.pokemonlegendary.com/en-us/.)

Crying over spilled milk at this point, that's been going on since the beginning. It's a collecting thing to its very core, to get all the pokemon within one game devalues the original intention a bit, getting them between several games makes it more like a treasure hunt. Also space within cartridges back then, and now just limiting things to keep tradition, at the same time for the encounter rate. Hacks where all pokemon are available, you still will have a lifetime to get all the pokemon because of the encounter rates being modified to accompany that, a limited amount of encounter slots for each area and route. And I'm a collector of sorts, I have all the physical main series games from Gen 3 to Gen 7, plus the digital Gen 1 and 2 re-releases. I can, I have caught them all.
It doesn't devalue anything, you'd still be compulsively collecting with just one version. Pretending that this is anything other than greed is silly.

But not collecting them all unless you hit the trade circuit, which back then was going peer 2 peer, and now it stretches to online. The whole tagline is "Gotta catch em all." Arguing about an over 20 year tradition that is loosely tied to this particular news bit is sillier, so let's just agree to disagree.

This reminds me of the mythical distribution back in 2016 where all mythicals excluding Deoxys, Diancie, Hoopa, and Volcanion, were given out right before the release of Gen 7.

I suppose the reason they're doing it is to say good by to the absolute horrid gen 7

This is just going to lead up to the last Pokemon anyone needs (legit) for a living dex, isn't it?

I have to say, I sincerely hate Pokemon distributions. They put Pokemon in their games, but you can't catch them or get them from other players, you must necessarily jump through hoops. When companies use on-disc DLC, it always leads to an uproar, but when Nintendo does essentially the same thing and requires people to visit "partner stores" to get the damn Pokemon they want, it's perfectly fine. You might think that it's okay because the distributions are free, but that would make you ignorant of human psychology - all events of this nature are retail-oriented and exist in hopes of people buying merchandise - they might as well, they're already in the store, they're through the front door. It's a little bit insidious, really - I'm not sure if that's the motivation, but that's the real life effect. I suppose it builds brand loyalty and keeps it in the public eye, but I personally just see it as holding customers hostage.
That's true. Also, let's not forget how it's limited, meaning one per game, even if you have multiple codes. Finally, while not distribution exactly, the whole "version exclusives" thing is really annoying, especially to people like me who despise trading (because it takes forever with all the stupid effects) and that goes twice for version exclusive events!

While it's supposed to be collecting, making stuff you will inevitably need to trade at some point for an equivalent be only once in the entire game, is VERY annoying! Like legendaries for example, you only get one of each, but if you want the ones from the opposite version you will often need to find either a sucker to trade with or give away one of your own (that you only get once)! And other similar things, like Type:Null only being in the game once. If you are collecting everything, you would want to have one of each Pokemon, but you can't have both Silvally and Type:Null without trading something relatively rare and the other person will end up without those Pokemon. See what I'm trying to say? It's not really collecting. If they split things in different versions, the least they should be doing to make the collecting part actually fun is to make everything (or at least the majority of things) collectible more than just once.

Naw. They're doing it for the exclusivity of each version, so the people can get the other versions' exclusive pokemon. Also Shiny Zygarde.

Gen 7 was amazing. IDK what you're smoking.

Let's be honest, Gen 7 was GOOD, but not amazing, more like second/third best. Gen 4 still is the best one and a revised one would be awesome (Sinnoh remake)!

I absolutely LOVED gen 7. But Hoenn is still my favorite:)

I haven't played gens 4 or 5, but I remember watching something about Black City in gen 5? That was so cool haha!

I see what you mean, but I'm going from the perspective as someone not only collecting the mons, but the games, as I said I have all the Gen 3-7 main series games. Just getting those all made me happy with the money expenditures made.

Dude you should go for the shinies next! I've gotten almost all the shiny legends (will be soft resetting for Celebi with Crystal)

- Off topic, but I read your post about DB Super and I just wanted to tell you that while I might not agree, I respect your volcanion:)

EDIT: changed "opinion" to "volcanion" in a lazy attempt to bring it back on topic... also I thought it would be a cute thing to say.

For me, it goes in this order: Sinnoh (great music, Pokemon, beautiful overworld, a lot to do post game [and even your own villa in Platinum], etc.), Hoenn (good Pokemon, legendary mon music rules, simple but well made overworld), Alola (average Pokemon, but pretty areas and while music is not the best, it grows on you as a whole), Unova (excluding the absolutely shitty Pokemon, everything about the ORIGINAL [B/W, not B2/W2] is great and has plenty of post game like Sinnoh), Johto (mainly because the gym types are more original than most others and I love Japanese culture so it looks lovely) and finally Kanto (most boring region with nothing to do, even if you include the Sevii Islands)!

I know, but not everyone can get both games of each pair for every gen, making it very hard for most people. I have to resort to FreeShop nowadays for the games past Sun because I don't have any money to splurge...

Celebi may be in Crystal, but it's unobtainable without an event and I doubt there's one going on right now. That means even if you do get the GS Ball in the Japanese Crystal somehow (because non-Japanese Crystal doesn't allow you to trigger the event in Ilex Forest even with GS Ball), it will count as hacked when moved to US/UM, so you will have to keep it there. Also, the Volcanion thing was just cringe...

Hasn't stopped people from completing their living dexes, requesting for tradebacks and shit on reddit and other places. I remember reading a story from someone who had been doing the journey for over a decade, finishing the living dex, and it updating every generation, so his journey kept expanding. I like that stuff, it took me 2 years myself with all the games in possession.

Really, it's hard for me to find fault in something that's been an institution for over 20 years. I can see the criticisms, but it's still a timeless (marketing) thing.

The event is coming to the US so it is happening :) It's been confirmed.

If you mean you will go and get given a Celebi, then that's GUARANTEED non-shiny. There's no such thing as "coming to US" for GS Ball, as even if you get it in non-Japanese versions, the event does NOT trigger. Meaning only way to get shiny Celebi is still ONLY with GS Ball in a Japanese Crystal.

It has LITERALLY BEEN CONFIRMED. Look it up. The USA ARE getting the event. NOT being simply given celebi.
