Not sure about new Vitas, but for used Vitas it was fairly easy when I was buying one last year to find a loads on really low FW. Was defo a buyers market.

The problem is when it comes to the Switch most ordinary people will have updated to at least 3.0.1 for Mario and whatever other games are coming soon that need a higher firmware. The only people that keep their Switches on a low firmware and are looking to sell are generally people who want a profit.

But by the same token, whenever I've purchased consoles used it's often people that haven't played them and just have them laying around gathering dust. I'd argue its far more likely someone is going to sell a console they haven't played in a while then someone selling one they were playing with last night. I'm not saying they are going to abundant, but you will be able to find one with moderate easily. Especially now.

They probably won't have them listed in the eBay listing titles, but it's not too hard to ask the seller to check. Most people that buy consoles have no idea what firmware even is.

I bought a PS4 from CEX in May and it's FW was 2.55, that's a two year old FW.

SMO already has quite a high attach rate, this will most likely get even higher. The same will happen when Pokemon Switch comes out. That takes a lot of Switch's out of the equation straight away. They will be out there I agree but it will be much rarer than you think, and when things are rare they cost more.

Right now when I type "Switch with Zelda" in eBay I can see 15 listings just on the 1st page of consoles with just Zelda. High chance none of these people have updated, they bought it for Zelda or the Zelda hype only and for whatever reason (disappointed, finished Zelda and not interested in anything else) they are selling the console. So right now it's insanely easy to get a Switch on 3.00 or less, both new and used.

As for in the future, most people (probably 99%) listing their consoles for sale never mention the FW or have any idea what it even is. Price increase is only going to come into when someone actually knows what they actually have, and given how tiny the Switch hacking scene is compared to actually Switch owners it means its going to have a negligible effect. Like I said, I bought both a Vita and a PS4 on FW that was 4 and 2 years old respectively, in a 1 years time I doubt it's going to be "rare" or "expensive" to find a Switch on <3.00.

Just curious... if someone owns Pokken and has their Switch on 4.0.2, will their Pokken also have 4.0.2 or will it have 3.0.0? I want to be safe. I have a friend who owns Pokken so I could borrow his cart to update my Switch, if it comes with >3.0.0 of course. :P

There is also a high chance they they didn't know what they were doing and updated when prompted to as the Switch downloads updates in the background and it's only 1 finger slip away from actually installing the update. The further we get down the line with the switch it will be harder to find 3.0.0 and below as Nintendo will start adding more functionality and improvements with firmware updates which people will update for.

Pokken will be 3.0.0. You can't write anything to the cart.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. In my experience with buying multiple used consoles over many years I've never had a problem intentionally or
unintentionally finding a console with +2 year old FW. My Switch is actually 3.00 atm so I don't have a problem, but I just really dislike it when people over inflate the value of something they own when in reality it fairly common and worth nowhere near what they think it is. If people with a <3.00 Switch think they have some ultra-expensive console that costs +$100 more than any other Switch, well then they are pretty deluded in my opinion.

Something is worth as much as someone is willing to pay.

So this exploit is essentially what Plutoo and friends achieved? If so, this is groundbreaking since I imagine we'll see a prompt release, rather than it being held away from the community. :P

No.

Sorry to bother but I'm a noob when it comes to homebrew. I thought homebrew also meant the ability to play games downloaded from the internet like in the Wii.

When you say "Good day for homebrew, probably going to be secretly disappointing for those who just wanted piracy." what do you exactly mean?
Also what practical uses could we have on the Switch from gaining homebrew other than piracy? Are SNES or NES emulators for example also not probable to happen despite the recent advances?

Thank you.

You're confusing a back-up loader (download titles from internet -> boot on system) and a general term like 'homebrew'. In the most literal sense, "Hello World" execution is homebrew but not very usable. 'Hello World' is the soundbite of success, in a sense, because it means you have code execution within the system itself. Its the very first thing you're taught in compsci, after all, and from there you learn and build more complicated software that can do more complicated things!

In this case, this doesn't bypass the Switch's encryptions (you'd need kernel and the ability to inject a *decrypted* title, so even a kernel point of access doesn't actually solve the overarching encryption/decryption problem). This is userland which will allow us to make and make use of neat apps like emulators, save managers, and such.

Switch homebrew has many uses beyond piracy. If piracy is all you want, you will be forever behind the curve with this system.

Nice regurgitation of a "profound" statement, It's not true though. Supply Vs demand effect the worth of an item. I could pay someone $1000000 for Mario Odyssey right now, doesn't mean it's worth that much.

are you willing to pay that much though?
Someone making a nonsensical decision about what they are willing/wanting to pay for an item does not mean that suddenly a item is worth that much. This isn't Plato or Kant, its really not that deep.

Save managers will be apliable only to <3.0.0 games though, right?

Read your previous post in full, great explanation as always. Cheers man.
