I'm new to hacking - what should I do after installing Homebrew to ensure my system doesn't get ruined? BTW this is the only console I have.

If you have installed B9S following the holy guide, then you have a layer of brick-protection in the form of B9S. If you mess something up, you can use B9S to restore a NAND backup or perform a CTRNAND transfer in order to repair the brick.

If you're not doing much other than homebrew and game-downloads, you're unlikely to brick anything anyway.

Homebrew and game downloads was the only thing I was doing, thanks! :)

If you have B9S and CFW you're safe from brick.
If you only have homebrew without any kind of CFW you're also safe from brick.
The only way to not be safe from brick is to have a CFW without B9S. (Even then you most likely won't brick unless installing cia's you really shouldn't be installing anyways)

Even if the system does somehow get bricked, you can always use an ntrboothax cartridge and GodMode9 to unbrick it.

...unless the brick involves physical damage somewhere, that is.

If the bootrom is Read Only Memory, how is b9s installed? If the nand chip can be removed and it could still boot off of an emunand, where is the exploit installing to?
Bootrom is already messed up, you don't write onto it. As for the exploit, it installs to the NAND, that's why it works when you make an EMUNAND from a NAND backup with b9s installed.
