It was after maybe 30-40 minutes, the "cartridge slot" was warm so I was wondering and touch the bottom and it was warmer

This isn't looking good for the future of hacks, so much for hacking the Snes Mini :( Power consumption isn't something can be fixed.

I reported an issue on github about this whole power supply/device gets hotter-thing. Let's hope for the best!
https://github.com/ClusterM/hakchi2/issues/496

I'm not gonna get my hopes up, to be honest, it may be the incompleteness of the program

Before everyone is calling this the end of the world: The SNES manual states that a 1A PSU (5W) is required. So anything below tat is within the devices range. How did you guys measure the current draw? Are there any "scientific" results? What's the current draw in the menu? Does it only climb during emulation? Might it simply be an issue with retroarch being more CPU intensive?

I don't know, maybe you all are a little bit too worried about this. It's not nice, sure, but I mean when I see how hot my mobile phone gets sometimes when doing emulation via MHL connection to my beamer and it still works after nearly 4 years. I personally don't think it will brick your device fast when you're playing sometimes a few hours. It's not getting that hot (at least my device). Yesterday I played and flashed basically the whole day and it was hot, but - like I said - not THAT hot. Even when this can't be fixed, I'll stay on the custom kernel. It's not an expensive car, you know...

I quit playing Demon's Crest and when I tried to load Super Mario RPG it shut off... no error, no shutting off message, only went off. I tried booting it back up, it wouldn't, I have to wait few minutes before it can be turned on again. Looks like an overheating issue to me.

You can throw a 1000watt power supply into a PC and your GPU/CPU/Etc can still overheat if not ventilated right.
Do you understand voltage, current, wattage etc mate? Let me put it this way I've got no concerns over a device drawing 700mA at 5 volts, if you all want to go back to stock then sure that's your option. It's all good (y)
Also your power supply is not inside your SNES Mini :)

No need to get snippy, stating that heat affects lifespan, this is a KNOWN thing...

I never said the heat was messing with the power supply...

does anyone know how to resolve the annoying c8 error. tried reflashing everything but have to push power down 2 times to shut down now
Do you have many games installed and are you using folders or not? I've read that more that 60 games without folders causes a shutdown error.

Hi,

I investigated an issue (or at least I think it is an issue / bug in the hakchi "hack" process to the custom kernel).

Facts:

- When I flash the custom kernel (using and old USB2 port in the PC), it is done OK, but when you try to turn ON the SNES mini it shuts off automatically after 1 second. This behaviour DOES NOT happen when you use a 2A AC adapter/charger direct to the outlet plug or an USB3 port (USB3 standar let pass more power than USB2). Then the console does not shut off.

- The behaviour DOES NOT happen when the ORIGINAL kernel is installed in the SNES Mini.

That made me think about it and suspected about an increased power consumption when the custom kernel is installed, so I made some checks with my AMP/Watt meter:

- With original kernel: consumption is about 2 Watts.
- With custom kernel: consumprion is about 3.5 Watts.

I was right.

This is a problem, because i use my NES mini (And want to use my SNES mini too) connected to the USB of my TV to get power. But it is NOT POSSIBLE with the custom kernel, because it is consuming near DOUBLE the power, and the TV is not capable of providingg it and consequently the console shuts off.

This shoud be enough to open a ticket in the Github to be investigated by the author.

that's right i've experimented that my device randomly shut down when reset and in the back becomes really hot with mod kernel and usb cabled to tv,in the meantime i have reflashed the original kernel and wait because i didn't want to risk some sort of damage to my device...

well it only shows when i power down tho

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

well i changed it to 30 games per folder and i had it on 100 games per folder. Used to work fine for like 20 times powering up but saw people saying it was a cache error so changed it to 30 and now the error is gone using rc5

there is something whicht bothered me a bit.
its the different size of the package pictures that is different with all add games.

and that the original earthbound has a different size then the other original games.

72 games with 2 folder and no c8 error when is shut down

well i didn't have that problem 2 for like 20 boots but after that i got that problem means it has to do with the cache and causing that so you'll get it eventually as did i

You're right. EarthBound's cover art is noticeably bigger than the other games. You can fix the size of added game's box art though by opening them in an image editor and setting the size to that of the original games.

Earthbound is different because it was released in a different box. The strategy guide was included with the game.
