My major motivation in getting homebrew running on my N3DSXL was so that I could once again play my DS games despite the loss of the cart slot. I'm set up, I'm good to go, and I tried the recommended twloader+nds-bootstrap setup. This also starts up just fine and has no problems finding images on the card. It just can't play most of them and I am jonesing for some Igavania right about now.

I was also told that some flash cards could help me out but not /how/ they could help or even which ones were useful. I have an old Sky3DS with a blue switch still sitting in my drawer from forever ago but this seems to have no applications for this particular task. Could someone point me at cards that do work for the purpose of playing DS games, if any do have greater compatibility than twloader+nds-bootstrap?

Virtually any DSi-compatible DS flashcart on nds-card.com will suffice. They all have near 100% compatibility, unlike TWLoader.

If you don't have Luma3DS, then you need to make sure your flashcart is compatible with your system version.

I recommend just getting a DSTT. TWLoader has very low compatibility. The DSTT has near perfect compatibility, and it functions as a nice media player with Moonshell.

I do have Luma set up. Will this impact my choice of card?

DSTT? The only results for this I can find via Google seem to be for a device intended to go into the slot the N3DSXL doesn't have.

Wait are you talking about Slot-1 or the GBA Slot?

You're in the 3DS section ;)

Most people recommend this flashcart: http://www.nds-card.com/ProShow.asp?ProID=149
It's one of the best DS flashcarts on the market. Unlike the cheaper ones, it has RTS, and unlike most R4 clones it doesn't have a timebomb (where the cart stops working after a certain date requiring a kernel update from the team which may or may never come out)
It works on latest OFW, and as a bonus it can also be used for ntrboot, which can be used to hack any 3DS.

yesh but OP said “a device intended to go in the slot the N3DSXL doesn’t have” when referring to the DSTR

Wow man! We share the same aim and purpose. i just want to play all the vania games in my n3ds :)

I do have the retail copies of the 3 vania DS games but it just feels much more satisfying to have them all in one. I ordered the r4i gold for loading DS roms and for ntrboot-hacking my daughter's O3DS (which i unknowingly updated to 11.5).

I also wish there is a better PS1/PSX emu which runs the vania titles.

I don't know what you guys are on about. The DSTT works fine on the 3DS using Apache Thunder's loader. It goes in the same slot that DS games do.
