Hi, I'm just about to sign up for giganews but it's my first time using any newsgroup so i don't understand a lot of stuff written on their website.
I would like to know what "SSL Encryption w/ 10 bonus connections" means and if its worth paying the extra 5 dollars a month to get it. I'm going with the Platinum account and so that's really the only difference other than the 10 or 20 Simultaneous Connections.

If anyone can clear that up for me I'd be very greatful!

SSL is an encryption standard, which means data that travels between you and the server is coded in such a way that anyone that somehow intercepts the data will not be able to see what that data is. You've used SSL encryption before if you use online banking, paypal, ebay, logging into your account on an online store, etc. You'll know this when there's a padlock shown in the "locked" position somewhere on your browser.

10 extra connections means you're able to establish a total of 20 separate connections to Giganews servers in order to achieve the highest transfer rate possible. If you've ever used download managers before, they "break up" a download into several "parts", and each part is separately downloaded, but all at the same time, rather than the whole file all in one shot from start to end, thus achieving much faster transfer rates and shorter download times.

That's really up to you. I'd say SSL is good to have if you have nosey neighbors with hacking skills, or maybe you're the type of person that believes in keeping your tracks on the internet hidden from "big brother". The 10 extra connections are good only if your bandwidth isn't being used to it's full potential. Giganews offers 10 connections on their standard packages, which is good for most people. You might want to check out their online speed measurement tool, located somewhere on their website. You can use that to compare to your bandwidth avaiable from your ISP and determine if the extra connections would benefit you.

Again, the choice is yours. Don't forget that Giganews has a (14 or 30?) day trial, so you can try the extra package, and if it doesn't work out, you can cancel within that time.

giganews connection is fast! extra 10 connection wont help you really. you can max it in 2-4connections. so bascially, giganews is charging you $5 for SSL.

if hacking neighbor is a problem, then i guess SSL is worth the $5.

Well, I subscribed to giganews, but for some reason I can't log onto the server.
The damn connection here at school blocks everything!
Won't be able to use it until I go back home

As RueGorE says port 119 is often blocked, fortunately:

Yes, you may also use ports 80 and 23 to access your Giganews account.

Port 80 is the standard http port so that should work, I use grabit for usenet and if you right click on the server and hit properties you can choose ports.

i use usenetserver.com

just as fast, not as expensive. 10 SSL connections included and 101 day retention for $15 a month, $40 for 3 months, or $3 for 3 days.

I also use usenetserver.com and love them. They offer great speeds and retention for a good price. They also offer several ports if port 119 is blocked.

will SSL encryption mean that my ISP won't be able to tell if it's news traffic or not? Cos my ISP has a 20GB daily cap on news/p2p/torrent traffic

Breaking your encryption is against the law unless with a warrant/ court order. Remember to stick it through port 80 as well, 119 is news as I recall which would count as news if it did not.

Also 20GB would require a flat out 24 stint at a connection speed of around 230kbytes a second (ok it is very easily done with usenet but it is something to bear in mind). The other thing: you may say "what about the other stuff", the only thing you will visit one of the torrent sites for in about 2 weeks after the fact is to see what is available.

Having loads of SSL connections apprently gets around traffic shaping that ISPs have during high usage.

I used to use usenetserver a few years a go. They had server problems and lost loads of information off the server. You couldn't repair it either. So I went on the giganews for a while. Easily the best newsgroup provider but too expensive. I get newsdemon now for £6.50 a month and its unlimited with 100 days retention.
