I ordered an R4i Gold 3DS mainly for soulsilver, i thought it would run fine because it's supposed to run games nativly but i guess i don't really know what that means because i am already having issues. I've tried EU, US, and prepatched roms along with no$GBA black screen AR codes an all of them. The game has a chance to black screen every time i enter/exit a building or enter/exit a battle. The patched rom seems to black screen less often but still often enough for it to be unbearable. I'm running 11.5 on luma 8.1 and downloaded the latest wood kernel from the r4 site, if it matters i run it in native 1 to 1 ds resolution by holding select. I am at a complete loss as for why this is happening. I am sort of new to the flashcart scene so i'm hoping there is some obvious or even not so obvious solution i don't know of because it would be really disappointing after waiting almost 2 months. anyone else deal with a similar experience? Thank you!

WOOD R4 isn't the primary firmware. It's secondary firmware. You need to first install the cart's primary firmware (it's the file below the WOOD R4 you see in their site, make sure to download the correct one), run it first on your console. Then you can put the wood Firmware on your card and go from there.

There are custom firmware's for the R4i gold cards (I don't know were to find them), give them a try and see what works for you.

Try and get a non hacked rom and then use a program that will turn it into the hacked rom for you. Some times that does work.
I would like to try and help more but having to send my new 3ds xl in to be fixed and i will not be able to test any of this and try it out for a few weeks but when i get it back and find something working, and I will. I will let you know how to fix it if you have not found a way around it by then.

can you try to explain more detail on how your error/black screen happened? how to trigger it?

i just backup my heartgold from my AUS cart and use it on my r4i gold 3ds and up till mr.pokemon house i still have yet to encounter any error or black screen.

Any time i change locations (entering/exiting a house, screen fades to black ect.) or enter/exit a battle theres a chance that the game will get stuck between the transition into the new area/overworld usually the audio still plays in the background but the game is rendered unplayable until i reset it

this is the one i'm using. got it when ntrboot was released.
Yep same one i'm using as well i only have ntrboot installed on it right now tho.
@VenomCosmos is that the same card your using? does your look just like this one or does your say wifi up at the top? Also @RedScorpion can you zip up the fw and only the fw files and stuff your using not the rom files and upload them for him to download them and give it a run? it would not hurt to try that.

The problem isn't the firmware but the SD card. Years ago with the early r4's it was a known issue that if you had a slower card or even a card that for some reason wasn't as compatible with r4 you'd get black screens while playing Pokemon games. The newer flash cards/firmware updates seemed to help alleviate this issue but it still happens. You can fix this by trying another card and that's all you can do. I'd recommend a class 10 sandisk.

*EDIT* Oh and make sure you format it properly. Download SD formatter and try that or just format to 64kb fat32.

If I recall those cards are class 4 so probably not. You could always try it but class 10 cards are really cheap now a days and that's the best way to go.
ok i will pick one up then i did not know if it was a class 10 or not and did not really read any on the card before i sent it into nintendo.

They are really cheep only $9 for a 16gb so that is what i'm going with. @VenomCosmos if the card does not work after formatting you can try and pick up a class to sandisk micro sd card and try it out.
