Ohhhh man. According to Google it is, so y'know. The definition doesn't even imply "elite". That's why we have terms like Casual Gamer, geee. Gamers are gamers, they play games. LOL.
So, tell that to Pleng up there, or to anybody that uses the word to define themselves.
They don't use it like that, and actually the way they use it makes no sesne.
I will rewrite what I am trying to say:
I mean, everybody in this fucking world "games", so everybody is a fucking gamer.

Somebody that plays competitive games professionally? But I've heard all kind of people using the word "gamer" to describe themeselves and they don't do any professional competition...

It is someone that plays games? That is every fucking body.... oh, no, you listen people say "he plays only smartphone games, he is no gamer"... hell, it is still a game as it is being played, but it doesn't seem to clasify.

In the end, gamer is just an elitist term that doesn't mean shit (that is the meaning people give it when they say "I am a gamer!"), and that applies subjectively to "whatever one person think is playing a serious game" (whatever that means), it is a bullshit term.

As far as I am concerned, everybody is a person, almost every fucking body plays some kind of game, and people that enjoy video games, are simply that: people that enjoy videogames, i.e. a common person from planet Earth.

- Yours sincerely, grumpy SarkW.

Yes. Yes we can. Those are not games and those people are NOT gamers. Mobile games are the heroin of "games." They are designed to be boring and stupid, so you waste your money. They are literally designed to feed on people with addiction problems. People involved in the mobile game business should be ashamed. (obviously not talking about full games for mobile or ports of console games) Look at what its doing to the normal game market too. Remember Kirby Fighters? Try it out... They have the time limit thing where you can only do so many missions every so often after time has passed, but without the ability to pay to decrease wait time like those piles of crap you call games. What sense does that even make? The game has no online functionality. They locked a SINGLE PLAYER GAME behind a time locked paywall, that you can't even pay to bypass. Literally the only point of adding this mechanic was to copy the style of many mobile games and make it terrible.

You and I will never be friends, will we.....?
No... a "gamer" would play a NORMAL puzzle game that doesn't try to charge you real life money for friggin power-ups. You know.... Bejewled, Tetris Attack, etc?

Ok then, different (better) metaphor... Would you call someone who rides a motorcycle once a week a "biker?" What WOULD you classify as a biker? Someone who rides all the time with other like minded people? Exactly. Please don't say a gang... If you're even considering it I can think of at least 3 biker groups around here that are not gangs. Once a year here we even have an event where bikers ride for charity.

I would classify "hardcore gamers" as people who play games for as much time as possible. Hence the name, "hardcore." You don't have to play games 24-7 like me to be a gamer, most people don't have time to play like I do, but playing a single game for one hour every Saturday would not make you a gamer. Much like me riding a motorcycle a few times doesn't make me a biker. A something-er needs to have passion in what they do. Playing a game for 1 hour out of every 168 doesn't exactly scream "passionate" to me.
Okay...I don't think we'll be friends over this, but that's okay. Our different definitions/interpretations can happily co-exist. :)

Let's see...I certainly can't deny that quite some mobile games are set up as money traps. Not all of them (and not even just mobile games... Games like WoW have or had far more money going around), and even then: to the definition of the word, it makes no difference (gambling is also a game, addicting as it may be).

Also... You do realize that at this point more game developers are feeling in the Mobile market than not, right? Should ubisoft, EA, square enix and Nintendo be ashamed for not creating what you would call a game?

The biker metaphor is probably better, but I don't really have an opinion on it. As with 'gamer' I guess I'd define it based on the dictionary and how it's used.

PS: I normally quote better, but it's quite a hassle (I'm on tablet here).

Do you have problems with that part of my post and it doesn't let you read the rest of it, ok, I will post it without that part so you read what I mean:
Damn, why're you so mad about something so small?
The term is by definition and general idea someone who plays games. Someone who plays games. This doesn't imply they are superior, nor does it imply they play games everyday, nor does it imply they do it for a living, nor does it imply they are inferior. It imply s they play games is all. Such a general term like this doesn't give anyone a right to define it more. Otherwise everyone would be defining everything so to speak. So anyone can be a gamer, where you take that and what you do with it is your choice.

Because I hate the use of the word "gamer" when people try to define themselves as something by a trivial thing.
For me it is stupid as saying "I am an eater", "I am an air breather", "I am a water drinker", etc.
PS: Yes, it is a personal crusade.

I called myself a gamer way back when all I had was a gameboy color.

Hell, I could consider myself a gamer without even having owned any games.
I wouldn't even really call it a title you get by playing games, but more rather just a way to describe yourself if you do.

So if you want to be gamer, you are. Since it's basically just a way you describe yourself.

We are on this site because we love games. Why fight? tbh i never said im a gamer. I just said i love games. I love to draw but im not a artist. If someone calls themselves a gamer that just mean that someone loves gaming as a hobby. However you don't have the call yourself a gamer even though you play games because its what you consider yourself to be. Its People opinions, don't argue with like something: you are not a gamer.

I agree, now let me take my virtual chill-pill and stop derailing the thread (it is my fault really).

Regarding the use of the word "gamer", I have had these encounters with many people that define themeselves as "gamers" and only that.
I have seen the word used by many people as a way to put themselves above others.
E.g. "I am a -true- gamer, I don't play casual games." and the so.

I hate this elitist usage, because as you said gaming is a hobby.
I am not against someone using the word "gamer" meaning that he play videogames as a hobby.
It is only that I see it used often in an elitist way, e.g. you are a "gamer" only if you have a $9999 PC, or if you only play AAA games or whatever.

That said, I feel that using a word like "gamer" to define oneself because of a hobby is weird.
I mean, if you play basketball as a hobby, you... well, you just like basketball perhaps. You wouldn't say you are a "basketball player"
In the other hand if you play basketball profesionally then sure you would be called a "basket player".
Then why not saying you "like" games instead of "I am a gamer". It is my opinion of course.

Agreed, although I can argue my opinions, it really all boils down to what @8BitWonder said, its what you call yourself. Its a self-label. I may not agree with you, but if you call yourself a gamer, then you're a gamer.

In my own defense, I've said this since the beginning.
People can call themselves whatever they'd like

i can understand why people doesn't want to call themselves as gamer, as it is not something to be proud of. in fact, people will being ashamed for being called as gamer, because most people think gamer is weird / nerd.

but its like saying you can not call yourself a gamer because your not a professional gamer. basketball player is a profession. you get called that because your a official player from a team. its quite different. Also game company's sometimes uses the slogan made by gamers for gamers. Not nba saying: basketball sports is made by basketball players for basketball players. i like to be a gamer One day sounds like its a profession while its not. I like to be basketball player sound like and is a profession. Of course there are gaming tournaments. But then the people who are watching is the target audience : The gamers or people who likes to play games. basket ball tournaments target audience is made for people who plays and or likes basketball.

games can be played by everyone for fun or competitive. Basketball is always a competitive game. Hence why becoming good at it and aiming for the title basketplayer.

I game, but mostly at night when the kids are asleep. I've only gamed on consoles/handhelds. I do have a pair of good headphones just to keep it quiet downstairs. I do have an xarcade solo stick, because I love fighters. I usually stand up at a bar stool while I play that one. My first console was an Atari 2600. It quickly went to the closet when the nes came out. I blame video games for my lack of homework completion, but still, I've graduated high school and have had a great job for the last 20 years that lets me provide for my family. Having the passion for gaming makes you a gamer, not what you have/don't have. Words with friends is the only online gaming I do now. No other online presence here.

Here are my laptop's specs:

Lenovo Thinkpad L412
Intel Core i5 M520
4.00 GB RAM (upgradable)0
Intel HD Graphics :ohnoes::cry: (I'm planning to set up a Mini Pci-e to connect a graphics card then display it to a TV using an HDMI)

Not good for gaming but surprisingly good at Photoshop and general work.
I'm not a gamer, but I've got tons of pirated games that I must have played only like once and if it makes you feel any better I have an Intel Core 2 Quad and GT 630

Shit. Reading some people's opinion here, some would say that I am not a gamer.

Here's my situation:
I play my ps4 maybe once or twice a week. There would be a few weeks where I do not play it at all.

Doesn't sound very gamey, does it?

BUT

Everyday I visit multiple game sites, including this site. I watch multiple YouTube videos /vlogs on games many times a week.

I purchase and buy many retro consoles (see picture) and have modded nearly all of them with various emulators and 1000s and 1000s of roms. I've got on order right now stuff for my ps2, so I can put games on a hdd (will I play them? Maybe for 5min. I just like to know I have them if/when I would like to play them)

Do I play them? Yaah sometimes. If one of the consoles in the picture below gets turned on once a year, that's pretty average.

Is the actual lack of gaming because I don't want to game? No. I have commitments. Full time work with work I have to bring home with me. A wife. A kid. Dogs. Housewor.

When I was a kid/ uni, fuck yeah, I gamed the shit out of those consoles. But now..... I can only game so much.

I'm interested to know. Am I still a gamer???

not pictured is my ps4, snes and all of my games and accessories for the consoles.
