"Free" (Ads) Retro Sega Games on Mobile from Sega Forever

Sega has announced their brand new "free" (read: ad-filled) "service" Sega Forever, which offers classic Sega games on Android and iOS. Sega Forever will launch tomorrow (the 6/22) with some classic titles like Altered Beast, Sonic The Hedgehog, Comix Zone, Kid Chameleon, and Phantasy Star 2, but also promises games from every Sega console including the SG-1000, Master System, Genesis, and even the Saturn and the Dreamcast. SG-1000 through Genesis games are supposedly going to be emulated, but Saturn and Dreamcast games will be full mobile "ports", meaning we'll finally get some proper Saturn gaming on Android!

Each game also comes with "up-to-date" fetures, like cloud saves, touch controls and leaderboards, and Sega promises to add new games "Every two weeks". If you don't like ads, you can optionally get rid of them for a measily $2 in-app purchase, or you can just deal with the ads and enjoy some free Sega games.

This is definitely some interesting news, the fact that Saturn and Dreamcast games may finally be easily playable on mobile devices without having to resort to emulation is pretty great news, and while touch controls are awful in most cases, the fact that these games will feature controller support means we'll have a great way to play those hard-to-emulate games on the go...as long as Sega ports the right ones (Panzer Dragoon series plx).

Quick note, for those who got Sonic 1 for free at some point previously like I did on iOS (free app of the week or something?), you can restore your purchase and get the ad-free version.

Also, why are all 5 games 120 mbs? These are all Genesis games, where is the file size coming from?

IIRC they're complete ports, not just emulation.

I was going to come in here and dog on Sega and how they do things now a days, but alas, I see they are promising Dreamcast and Saturn titles, which could be a step in the right direction, asuming Panzer Dragoon Saga is amongst the titles to be released.

Are android apps compatible with external gamepads?

Depends on if the developer puts in the 30-minutes of effort required to make it compatible or not.

Surprisingly few are, considering how much little effort involved. Doesn't help that Google have taken gamepad navigation out of the main UI since Lollipop

Honestly, I have to applaud Sega for their recent business decisions. Between allowing classic roms/rom hacks on Steam (sure the sound emulation is pretty bad for genesis games, not sure why but anyways) that within itself is pretty freakin' cool. Now allowing people to play the classics on mobile for free (with ads) or pay $2 per game to remove them. That's pretty awesome. Of course, we all know, we could just as easily use emulators on our phones/tablets to do all this without the ads, but the fact that Sega is actually getting with the times and being realistic about this, makes me okay with this model. I don't mind dealing with ads to give them some revenue, this is pretty freakin' sweet. Heck, maybe I'll even pay for some of the games from time to time.

Side Note: I actually downloaded Sonic 1 last night and tried it out really quick and while a touchscreen is far from ideal, for that particular game, it was actually usable. I can definitely see it being an issue for other games that require much more precise controls, but bluetooth controllers can be bought online for next to nothing if you know where to look, so its all good :)

Didn't they just release an update for android? I have a $99 ZTE Phone too and runs fine.
Yeah I think things have improved since the first releases a few days ago..... but still, Unity as a wrapper, WTF Sega...(I suppose it's less work).
Frankly I'm not interested yet, did give Sonic a whirl out of curiosity but not bothered about anything pre-Saturn. Get some of those Saturn games on there though, and they can take all my money! :D
