Hi.
I'm trying to buy a modbo 5.0 chip for my PS2 and I don't know where to turn, because all my local modders say that they haven't been able to acquire any for a while now. I'd like to buy it from anywhere in Europe if anyone here knows anywhere I could do that?

Thanks for replies in advance,
Jan

Have you tried the softmod based options?

It's already been modded, but I just recently noticed that the dude scammed me, because while the modchip allows for outofregion PS2 DVDs, games that are on PS2 or PS1 CDs won't load no matter the region. And I doubt softmodding would help me get around it.
At the time I loaded my PS1 games on the PS1 and didn't care about backwards compatibility as much, but now that PS1 isn't available to me anymore.
EDIT: And if you're wondering how I know it's the modchips fault and not the CD laser bing broken is that it plays audio CDs without a hitch.

Thank you, will check it out. :yay:

I'm referring more to HDD/USB loading, but then I don't think PS1 games are supported.

Have you checked which chip is included? Might require flashing/configuring to work.

As in which chip I currently have? I could follow a guide and take my PS2 apart to check, cause I don't know at this point.

try looking up some button combos to try, if he put a modbo in there already, you could press triangle and circle while booting and see if you get a config menu

And, buying from EurAsia is a great option, modrobert is a great guy it seems

After many hardships of trying to find a boot combination, I gave up and opened it up. Gotta say the 9XXXX has a crapton of screws to get the motherboard off. But I finally know what I currently have... "Mars Pro GM-816HD" I don't know where to go from here...

PS1 HDD loading is possible with POPStarter or PS2PSXe.

What happens when you try to play a CD game?
Does it try to boot the game at all or does it just say "Please insert a PlayStation or PlayStation 2 disc"?
If the latter, it seems that it's detecting the disc as burned. Which shouldn't happen, since you have a modchip.
But if it's the former, it's likely that the laser is just unable to read the disc properly. Maybe you're using low quality CD-Rs or your burner is bad, or maybe the laser just needs a pot adjustment.

When I try to play a CD game it either ends with a blank screen, it opens up the browse menu (everytime I press X on the PS2 game option it just reopens the browse menu) by holding one of the buttons (dunno which one anymore) to do quick boot, it loaded up the PS1 splash screen, then it just went into blank again. And that was with an original game, in the same region as my PS2. (both PAL). I can try again to "troubleshoot" to see how far I get.

So it has problems running original CD games too?
It really sounds like the laser is just struggling, if it has problems with original games then no matter what CD-Rs and what writer you use it will probably still struggle, but a pot tweak could still help.

Pot tweak?
Also note that it reads audio CDs without a single problem.

Potentiometer tweak, it changes the power output of the laser. People used to have to do them all the time on GameCubes to make burned discs read correctly. Seems that it's possible to do on PS2 as well.
Also, I don't have an explanation as to why audio CDs work correctly, but I imagine it's just some differences in how the data is written or how the PS2 reads audio CDs specifically that makes them work better.

Okay, as far as I've checked, I'm gonna need a voltmeter to check if I modded the potentiometer correctly, right? I don't have one, which means I'm gonna have to try this at some other point.

Regardless if this is the case of why my CDs don't load, I'm still probably going to, if possible, change modchips, just because I want to load some other software on the PS2 through USB, and I think this modchip only supports PS2 HDD launches at best from USB as far as I've read into it after finding out what it was. (One of the aforementioned software is an upscaling thing for PS1 games, that outputs a higher res for PS1 games.

So I did the pot tweak and it didn't help. It's still the same with PS1 games and PS2 CD games. It actually might be a faulty modchip... Oh well, I ordered the modbo already and am waiting for it to arrive ^^
