I think I did mine first when the Web compiler was made. I didn't trust myself compiling the thing on my own! And by that stage dozens of people had done it so it felt a little safer not being a pioneer/Guinea pig
I compiled it by myself, because there was no web compiler, I actually offered to compile it for people on Discord and GBATemp lmao

So I read the FAQ and am already interested, and have the video from 33c3 (even though I'm not sure what that even is) about this open right now.

Do we have some sort of ETA right now, for when we might see an early version out? Because this is pretty rad.

No we don't have it yet. You should follow hedgeberg on Twitter, he almost has the Bootrom.
The mod (@Issac ) said, we should call them they not he/she to prevent that discussion to relive.(even though I asked them on twitter and got the answer "genderfluid leading female" but I just do what the mods say, I'd rather don't risk a ban on here.)

Done and done! Hopefully next year when I take some engineering intro classes I'll be able to figure out some of this stuff, because this seems like the kind of thing that would be EXTREMELY FUN to tinker with!

I have done it a lot since it was possible for many 3DS systems.

Now it's really easy compared to back then.

I used to last at least 8 hours per 3DS. Now it's as less as 30 minutes. (Or 1 minute if you like to live a life of risks with OTPLess installs on N3DS).

Oh, man, how time goes on.

Accidentally saying he or she or whatever, based on assumptions isn't a big deal. Debating someone's gender, arguing over what genders exists or not, and things like "F what they want to be called, Imma call them 'he'", is just bad behaviour in general.

he, she, they, hedge, all seems fine as long as were not trying to call him it, that's how I see it

I did it when aurora's implemenatation was out, (NotSafe)A9lhinstaller + PlaiSysUpdater + OTP Helper + 80€ Phone for file transfer = about 10 Hours install time and a lot of luck that there werent corrupted files.

OMG I used OTPHelper last year when I installed A9LH on my N3DSXL! Also, I dearly remember having to clarify and see if I was going to be okay once I flash my "Unbrick 2.1 N3DS EmuNAND" option or whatever it was called, on YouTube watching MrMario2011's tutorial on how he done it on his N3DSXL system! Amazing how much has changed for the better since then! :D

that's when things got easy, I had to use xorpads etc to rebuild the image manually
Yuppp. Decrypting the bricked emuNAND and moving the NAND headers or whatever from sysNAND to the emuNAND. Do you guys know how fucking scary it is, restoring a emuNAND backup that you hex edited back to life?

Oh I do. I remember that stressful flashing and the fear of exiting Decrypt9, leaving your very last chance to go back.

I first hacked my brother's O3DS XL using some guide to install RxTools. This was near the end of a Pokémon distribution, and he was on 10.3 (which was the last hackable/downgradeable firmware at the time), so I wanted to get it done before we had to update to get the Pokémon.

Sometime later, I installed A9LH using Plailect's original guide (brown text on black background?). That was fun, especially the OTP part. (I think I compiled the A9LH installer myself, too.)

...and then a few months later, I got my own New 3DS XL, and I think I used the same guide right before it was changed to the GitHub Wiki version. It required manually decrypting and re-encrypting the CTR NAND partition by dumping xorpads and running a program on PC. That sure was fun.

(Disclaimer: This was over a year ago, so I might not be remembering everything 100%.)

nobody knows what xorpads are nowadays.
xorpads are still needed if you want to decrypt games and/or eMMC using a PC.

...until Boot9 is dumped, in which case the actual keys can be retrieved from the BootROM, and OTP dumps can be decrypted to obtain the eMMC keys.

(Interestingly, the only reason xorpads work is because of a weakness in AES-CTR. AES-CBC, which was used on Wii, doesn't have the same problem.)
