This started as a status message, but it sparked some interesting discussion, so at the advice of someone on my status, I made a thread to see what everyone else thinks.

Now, its not my place to decide the rules of this site, nor am I the kind of person to usually censor what people talk about. However, I am seeing more and more of these threads every day, and its getting out of hand. They always, without fail, devolve into bigotry and arguing. With this being a video game website, and these sorts of threads causing so much drama, maybe it would be for the best?

An example I would like to give is the thread from the other day about the Afghanistan bombing. After several pages it devolved into several people saying how gays should be executed. The thread was deleted shortly after. My question is, why aren't those people being punished and having their comments deleted? Why was the entire thread removed? Some of that conversation was legit discussion. I have a feeling the staff here is tired of the crap too (please correct me if I am wrong).

So what do you all think? I don't wanna censor people really, but at the same time I think it would make the site a more friendly, enjoyable experience for everyone. Maybe another option would be to create a separate forum for this stuff, so at least it doesn't appear on the front page? Please, let me know how you all feel too.

EDIT: At this point, after discussing this for so many hours, my opinion on the matter is that outright banning this sort of thing is not the answer. I do, however, feel that off-topic discussions of this nature don't belong on the front page of a gaming / hacking forum. A lot of people are tired of seeing it and it just plain makes us looks bad as a community when 4 out of the 10 topics on the front page are off-topic shit shows of bigotry and hate. This is obviously not too often the case, but it does seem to be happening more frequently.

Yes please , we should ban religious and political stuff , this should be a rule for every forum.
As for LGBT i couldn't care less.
We cant discriminate. Either we ban all of this stuff or none of it. Its not fair to only ban some controversial topics.

I find furry fetishes revolting as much as the next guy, but there are a lot of people who have "furries" or animals as their profile pick and most if not all the time, their comments have nothing to do with being a furry. Maybe i just haven't seen to many of these "disgusting furry posts."

I dont think they should be banned. I dont really take part in them, but its off-topic and people who cant talk like normal people about off-topic stuff in the off-topic section should be banned. Not the Topic itself. Everybody should be able to talk about things they want to talk about. If you get so pissed about seeing threads like these, just look away. Its the Internet. You dont have to take part in them. This is not a forum that has to adjust to your interests. You're not the only member on here.

Personally, I would say yes. Mainly because this is a gaming forum, we talk (mainly) about gaming things here, with the occasional off topic thread here or there. Things like religion or politics that are directly unrelated to gaming simply shouldn't exist here IMO. Every time I see these threads they're inevitably shut down because of those few shit stains who can't help but get their jimmies all rustled (haha remember that le meme?) over an anonymous comment made by some other shit stain.

But it's hard to sort of "ban" particular topics when they occasionally drift into the realm of gaming...For example, the recent Jon Tron thing, that entire situation was based around his political views and statements...which were then discussed by our users and things. Instead of completely banning the subject, it would be a "better alternative" to simply move those threads to the blog section. This would keep the forums themselves clean of the "shit", while at the same time allowing discussions of this manner for whoever cares.

You know, you could just not read the threads if you don't want them around. The problem, however, is the people participating in the discussion that derail it into a flame war and/or mess. While the whole "don't read it" thing still applies, users who participate in the flame war and/or mess should receive official warnings IMO.

You know instead of outright banning these topics, there should be option where people can submit a claim to a group of knowledgeable people. This option should be placed at the bottom of every post and give an option to type out a message. Then from there this group people should decide what's best for the site/topic/post.

A very good point. Maybe restrict these topics to blogs and remove blogs from showing up on the recent threads list on the front page?

You can just remove the blogs from showing up yourself if you didn't want to see it, some people like following other people's blog posts.

I see your point, but what about when youre trying to have a legit discussion before that happens? The thread just ends up being locked / deleted anyway. Seems kinda pointless to me.

Warn them and if they refuse to change it, ban them.
It really is that simple.
This shouldn't even be a discussion.
There are certain things that are simply outside of the scope of tolerance and acceptance.
IRL, Yes, i agree with you. Furry conventions make me want to take a bullet to the brain.
However... Its just an animal picture on a gaming website. If its staight up pr0n, then yes change it, but if its not "bad" then i don't see anything wrong with it. Clearly the staff tolerates it because several of these people showed up in last years Merry Tempmas video.

I believe that's called the "Report" button ;P

But yes, as I already said in the previous thread (twice!), these kind of things don't really belong in a forum like GBAtemp, especially once they go full off-topic and just completely derail into insults.
Until the whole situation calms down a bit, I'd suggest banning them.

Mate, this is intolerance at best. If the pic is legitimately NSFW? Fine... Otherwise? Leave it alone.

To be honest, I don't like how those topics tend to generate drama and go full flame trollfest most of the time, but...

I believe one of the most relevant defining characteristics of GBATemp that sets it apart from other similar sites and makes its identity is its openness to many types of discussions, opinions and points of view.

I would really go against the idea of censoring those topics, in any case I would prefer if they were all forced into some section of the forum that could be disabled from showing up in the front page if any easily offended user wants to do so.
