Because those who have their old gateway cards can still use it along with the "free tools everyone else uses". What's there not to like when u get what everyone already has plus some extra goodies? Not to mention its even more fun to use them when people try to convince you to discard it. Its their choice since they paid for it too(yeah sue them for playing free games early on when most were dreaming for free gaming on 3ds).
So in short things change, we get powerful free tools which can do almost everything. But there's way to use both the free tools and the old paid solution together, and why shouldn't I?

Because they need to justify their waste of money and can't stand other people enjoying better community tools for free.

Because it was expensive (dunno if it still is) and it would be useless if it's not being used? haha

How long have you two been taking advantage of 3DS scene? There was a time (and significant amount of it) when the GW was the only real option for running "ROMZ". Can you fault those of us that bought them back then?

Did you guys TLDR my post? I have everything you have and more, plus I was playing pirated 3DS games back on 4.x... $60 well spent, IMO. I'm guessing you never even owned or used a GW and thus have no basis for an opinion on the question posed... Why come in here and post condescending bullshit aimed at people who still use their GW's? Not every GW user is stuck using MSet/BrowserHax/etc and emuNAND.

@DespyCL Like NTR for cheats? Just NO!!! Not even close. Exactly what do you think you have access to that is better than what I have access to... Paid for or free?

@ov3rkill You have no idea what flash carts and similar piracy solutions for consoles used to cost; some still do, check out the Everdrive products. <smirk> Actually Everdrives are cheap by comparison to what you would have paid for the counterparts back when those consoles were in their heyday. Excluding the DS era, $60 was the least I have ever paid for a flash cart style device (I'm including disk drive solutions for 16bit era consoles). Fuck, $60 is dirt cheap. My Super Magic Drive, I think I paid $300 for the thin back in the very early 90's, took me months to save up for and at best is in my dad's attic (a place I haven't been in over 25 years) but more likely in a land fill. I'm not stuck on GW because of the $60 and remorse about spending it.

this is correct. flash carts for a lot of early systems cost a couple hundred dollars even today. I was going to buy one for my retron 5, but I didn't for two reasons. first, they're not compatible and second I'm a purist anyway. I want the actual carts, the actual controller. I would the actual systems is space wasn't an issue.

There are some new members that just shit on GW
A bit of a history
People bought it when it was new.
I bought it in 2014
"WHY IT'S OVER PRICED A9LH MASTERACE LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"
There wasn't anything like that in those years
And I don't see any reason to move right now to A9LH + Luma, just no reason. I'm almost perfectly fine with GW

do what u feel comfortable with. I'm not one of those people despite having moved on. when I bought the gateway, there was no cfw, so I didn't have any option either.

Well on this forum Gateway isn't the really popular, but when it's to talk about it's just people that dislike it, mostly.

But if you look at chinese/japanese forum, here it's like 99% of Gateway users

I'm too lazy to port my current GW setup to something else. I aways feel like setting up a custom firmware is a clusterfuck when my current 3ds can do almost the same the same thing.

Sticking with it, implies there is effort in doing that. Mine boots straight to Gateway, I've had a Gateway since way before there was any other option. It does everything I want, everything I need, and I've got better things to do than spend my time researching and finding the best current up-to-date guide that will let me use A9L or AL9 or 9AL or whatever it is.

I can run CIAs, freeShop, and things which aren't available on freeShop.

I know some people say there is no risk, but then I read posts from people who have bricked their 3DS so obviously there is some risk, even if it's just reading the wrong out-of-date guide or not following the instructions properly. And doing a process to something that works for the sake of a faster boot time, when I hardly turn it off, I'm not sure what I'd gain from it.

Also it makes some sad people feel superior, who so obviously have something missing in their lives that they need to, so in many ways it's a sort of charity act. :)

I don't know. People really like supporting the antithesis of homebrew - hacking scenes I guess. It was just a way to make money off a subset of a userbase and nothing more. I bet GaryOpa cried quite a lot when he found out people didn't need his DRM card anymore.

something is seriously wrong with the ctr transfer from what I've seen. originally, u'd reflash the entire NAND, but something seems to go wrong for many with that step.

I like cheats. That's my reason. It's nice I can load .3DS files tho. Since I do archive all my games as .3DS and .CIA. I am crazy like that.

But anyways, back to the cheats thing. No, I don't mind paying for a cheating device, and I have to say GW's cheat menu hasn't let me down. I like it.

I own a CyberGadget Save Editor dongle. Paid 120~USD to import it back in 2014. Also, own a Datel Powersaves dongle. I think I paid 20~USD for that? I don't remember that one to well, since I got it locally.

So for me, dropping money on a cheat device isn't a big deal, and to be honest, I feel like I have gotten my money's worth.

Now, I do know about NTR, but I've never been a huge fan of it. But, I am not limited to just using that. I actually do use NTR as well.

But at the end of the day, I don't recommend GW. For new people, using 3ds.guide and getting A9LH+Luma3DS is really the best solution, and while NTR cheat plugins aren't perfect (at least to me), it's still something.

It's funny when people bring up, "I bought it back when in 2014" as an argument. Yes, it was useful back in 2014, but it's also hasn't aged well. Currently it's lagging behind something horrible with OFW support and lacks basic features like FIRM0/1 protection. Sure you can validate it with cheats and .3DS loading, but honestly those still aren't worth the price tag.
People are just paying to stay out of date at this point. With Sighax looming around the corner, it's just going to get worse Gateway users. As they will mostly not get sighax support for 6 months and have it based on older code.

You can say a lot of things about GW but, they were the first to load romz on the system. They're still working on updates for there product. I have two 3ds's with A9LH don't get me wrong, but on some usenet engines people only download .3ds files because it's a lot easier for most people who don't have the knowledge to mod there firmware.

I'd just say the main reason is that people bought them in the past and want to continue getting use out of something that they paid so much for. I see nothing wrong with that at all. The main problem is new people trying to use Gateway while they are less than punctual about releases with new firmwares for their cards compatible with Nintendo. IMO only an idiot would buy something from a company that basically says "fuck you" to it's customers after spending like $80. It's pretty ridiculous that they never even had 11.3 support for their cards when there was a pretty large window between 11.2-11.4 and they produced nothing. Yet, the free patchware (Yep, that's what I'm calling it now since they aren't true CFW) Luma/Corbenik/etc has it done almost in realtime. That is a HUGE problem for a company anywhere, I'm honestly surprised they are still manufacturing and not just letting resellers take over.

To simplify my opinion as much as possible, I wouldn't recommend anybody buy a Gateway cart. With modern CFW, there really is no reason to drop cash like that. With that in mind, I still use my Gateway from time to time. It's second to none in its cheat system and live RAM editing is great. If you already have a Gateway, I can't think of much of a reason not to use it.

So you use 2014 as an argument? How cute. I was very well aware of the scene back then and i never got one because i already had my legit games that needed to be played and finished.

Cheats? Cute argument. Filty cheaters, i play my games legit, no need for them (despite my games being pirated). Also .cia > .3ds

People just use cheats to make a game you already played fresh and give you a different experience.
I still think gateway is bad because it hold back some people from updating to a9lh, that is clearly superior.

Why? It seems like everyone on gbatemp is a broke school/college kid with no money. Gateway costs $60, thats a price of one original game. For me its absolutely worth it just because it saves so much time with direct .3ds loading (nothing beats grabbing full romset from usenet and copying it at 30-40mb/s on fast microsd) and cheating my way through hard games that I don't want to grind. And I can use that saved time to earn much more than $60 heh.
Maybe its a grown up-problem but personally i have more free money than free time and anything that saves me some time is worth it...so yeah, thats that. And you can of course use it with a9l/luma/rei/whatever you want.
It's pretty ridiculous that they never even had 11.3 support for their cards when there was a pretty large window between 11.2-11.4 and they produced nothing.
1) It still works with all games, only eshop (and maybe online for some games? haven't checked) is broken.
2) You have to realize that unlike open-source CFW they have to rewrite a huge part of their launcher to use new firm and encrypt all the changes like usual.
3) And I'm pretty sure that they don't really sell any cards now so there is no incentive for them to continue updating their software.

Cheats, ntr is crap compared, even when using it with only the translation patch in mhxx ntr crashes with nothing, if you leave the game you must restart the console, sooo gw is great for me, I even use the console with gw only because even though I have luma too, never use it in reality, everything works in gateway except gba and dsi ware, but thats why I have a gba with m3, dsi ware sucks imo. I got the card when it was released, everyone else were so salty because they were the only ones that had a way of running backups, a9lh is very recent before that rxtools did not have the signatures patched, so everyone was sucking finger until they modified to run that, and after that everything is history because palantine cfw was so bad that is not worth to mention it
