PS1/2 Thinking about modchiping my PS2. I have a few questions.

I want to modchip my PS2 so that I can play PS1 and PS2 imports on it (I have a chipped PS1, but the poor thing is starting to die on me, even after replacing the laser and adjusting the bias and gain.). I want to be able to play them straight off the disks, so if anyone mentions FreeMcBoot, I will slap them.
Anyway, my questions are:
- What PS2 model is the best for modding? I have a Slim SCPH-75002 (which is a V14, I think?) Is this a good model to work with or would it be worth getting a different one for modding? Does it even matter at all?
- Where's the best place to buy a chip? Needs to ship to Australia and be reasonably priced.
- What chip should I buy?
- How easy is it to mess up? Of course I'm not just gonna jump straight in and start soldering without practice, but if I do something wrong could it kill my PS2? Could the smallest mistake mean disaster, or would it need to be really big f*** up to actually cause permanent damage? I only have one of these things and replacing it would cost money, something I don't exactly have a lot of.

That's about it. I don't really need any tips for the actual soldering part. I've already looked up some tutorials and my Dad knows how to solder (he is/was an electrician, so I'm pretty sure he knows what he's doing), so he's gonna help me.

I dabbled in the PS2 scene some years ago, so my information could be outdated.

People say that the Phat V7 (SCPH-39xxx) is the best to mod, due to having the best and most reliable optical drive.

In my opinion, the best models are the Phat PS2's that can be fitted with a 3.5" HDD via the PS2 Network Adapter. Games can be loaded onto and played directly from the HDD via FMCB/FHDB and HDL/OPL, no optical drive needed.

But you've got a slim already, so obviously adding a HDD is not possible (some earlier slim models still have the IDE pins on the motherboard and you can solder your own IDE cable to run a hard drive)

The best modchips to appear towards the death of the PS2 scene are the 'DMS4 Pro SE' and the 'Matrix Infinity.' But in all honesty, you don't really need a modchip to run backups on PS2's these days. You've got a lot of reading ahead of you:

1) You need to research how to softmod your PS2 with something called "free memory card boot" or more commonly known as 'FMCB'

2) After you have successfully got that running, you can install a homebrew app into your PS2 called "ESR.ELF"

3)Then you 'aquire' PS2 ISO games somehow ( wink ;) ) and patch them on your PC with a windows program called "ESRDiscPatcher"

4) Burn the patched PS2 game ISO to a DVD disc (highest quality media is preferred to extend your lasers lifespan) and select ESR from the FMCB menu and play.

ESR essentially tricks the PS2 into thinking the pirated PS2 game disc is actually a DVD movie, therefore bypassing PS2 copy-protection.

Good luck! :)

I'm well aware of FMCB, I mentioned it in my first post. As I also said there, I want to be able to run imports straight off the original disks and as far as I'm aware, FMCB can't do that.

Rip them to ISO, patch and re-burn? That will be far easier and cheaper than fitting a modchip.

I always get my modchips from ozmodchips. Be wary though, the PS2 is a very complex piece of electronics and circumventing it's security demands up to 18-20 wires to be soldered to the main board......
