You were right. That does sound crazy.
I kept my firmware on my 3DS on the golden 9.2U until hacks were more than just homebrew channel. But if I remember right with the Wii U, Nintendo will force everyone's Switch up to update upon setup to whatever firmware is the latest. If they were smart, they'd just make the firmware updates modular and without interaction from the user.

I got an original 3ds for my birthday a couple months after it came out. Had 1.0fw on it. I decided to keep it in storage until the system got hacked. (Didn't mind because I had tons of DS games I was still working on). By the time there was a usable hack (Gateway) the 3ds XL was out.
Ended up selling the 3ds to an eBay collector for the going rate of a new 3dsxl. In the end, having a low fw didn't matter. Just needed to stay where people were recommending and things would be fine.
In the Switch's case, I will update but not often or quickly. If an exploit is found, I will hopefully still be a version or 2 behind the discovery point. I'm guessing we can enjoy it for awhile without stressing.

I have a ps4 metal slime edition which was only released in Japan. I was waiting on 3.55, but I updated in order to grab a dq theme from the JP store. I kinda regret doing that, but any exploit is most likely going to be for the latest firmware or else u'll probably be locked out of newer games. there was/is a way around this on the vita, but that only works with some games.
The problem was if you already had an XL certain games forced an update before Gateway was released. I remember because I bought the boys some games for their birthdays and tried to convince them to wait a bit when I saw they games forced and update but they would have non of that.
Or another youtubehax, it had the outdated webkit..Maybe web browser is hidden in the system settings, they said mii maker is still there just under system settings, or maybe you have to download from eshop. Who knows what is hidden under system settings if they moved mii maker.
I do agree, since games will be pay online, I will only update, if a game forces me too. So, I'll be more lax with the updates. Then again, some games may still be able to play online for free.

I only hack my systems under a few circumstances.
1: The generation is long dead and thus my actions will not effect sales.
2: The system is extreme successful and it's several years into the life of the system. Thus they've already made enough profits.
3: I am extremely dirt poor and everything else failed me.
Thus I will be updating my system.

Sooo, nobody is going to comment on how the Switch requires an update to access the SD card? I mean, that is probably managed in some low level execution, probably as soon as it checks firmware version against online version, so any online exploits will be force patched as soon as an update comes out and even then if you are connected to internet on the switch, you won't be able to use any exploits regarding the SD card with the acknowledgement of the update. They cracking down hard

Well with the separate paid online service, it'll certainly be a choice between cracking your system and playing online. At least early on.

I'm not concerned, you just use a dns type deal to block the update server like in the wii u, if it can't find a update then it can't make you download one to patch an exploit. This will be a console with a flashcart so don't worry about SD access
This. And the fact they want you to use a smartphone as a multiplayer accessory suggests Nintendo probably thinks everyone has a smartphone with them nowadays, and thus, doesn't need a browser in their game machine too.
In the initial release timeframe, hackers won't be able to peek inside the system so they will have no idea if exploits are being patched or not.
It's assumed that for those buying a system and not updating, they will have a second system that they do update and play with etc. This has a $600 starting price tag so I don't think many will do this obviously.

No idea, that's dependent on the exploit that is found first but I'd be happy with a sky3ds type flashcart to be honest.
