NOTICE:

It has come to my attention that my old download links and instructions were within the gbatemp rules. I am not linking any actual roms, or full romfs files. I am only linking the individual edited files required to play Rising Sun & Waning Moon. If this is threatened to be taken down once more, I ask that mods first look and tell me why the Nova Sun/Umbra Moon mods do the same and have remained up.

Please ask if you want to upload this elsewhere, or at least give credit back to this post or my twitter.
Lets start off with some context. Currently, pk3DS allows us to edit the trainers and move sets of pokemon within Pokemon Sun and Moon. I decided to go ahead and create a challenge mode of sorts, similar to that of Pokemon Blaze Black/Volt White. Currently editing wild encounters!

Changes:
  • Trial Captains and Kahunas now all have teams of 6 Pokemon.
  • Level curve greatly changed. Team should be in high 70s/low 80s by the end of the elite 4.
  • Trainers have Pokemon not usually seen in Alola.
  • Movesets of weaker Pokemon is finished.
  • Youngster Joey has a top percent Rattata.
  • Wild encounters up until the post game are finished! Have fun everyone!
  • Custom music for post game returning trainers.
  • Almost every Pokemon has access to their hidden ability.

A NOTE ABOUT INSTRUCTIONS:
THE EASIEST METHOD IS GETTING A CFW, DO IT WHILE YOU CAN.
Instructions: (CFW Required for this method. See other method below if you don't have a CFW) I also still need to make the method easier for Pokemon Sun users, sorry!

THINGS YOU NEED:
- Latest nightly build of luma. (Get this through the .cia updater)
- The hack's GARC files (the stuff that actually overwrites the original assets) Get it from the Google Drive link

New and Updated Instructions! About time!

Luma Game Patcher Method:
    • Create a folder named titles inside luma.
    • Create a folder with the game's title id as the name (0004000000164800 for Sun, 0004000000175E00 for Moon) inside titles.
  • Create a folder titled romfs within luma/titles/(titleID)
  • Place the "a" and "data" folders within the "romfs" folder.
  • Make sure "Enable Game Patcher" is checked in luma3ds setup.
  • Start Sun/Moon
Thats it! Easiest way to tell if its working is by starting a new game or checking your Trainer Passport.

FOR POKEMON SUN USERS: RENAME THE "3" FILE IN a\0\8\ TO "2"

Layeredfs: (These instructions only apply if you use the Layeredfs files)

The LayeredFS feature allows you to replace RomFS files with files on the SD card for most games. To use it:
  • Create a folder named titles inside luma.
  • Create a folder with the game's title id as the name (0004000000164800 for Sun, 0004000000175E00 for Moon) inside titles.
  • Create a folder called romfs in the game's folder.
  • Place the "a" and "data" folders within the "romfs" folder.
  • For example, to use LayeredFS with Pokémon™ Sun, make a folder named romfs , put your replacement files in it, then put romfs in 0004000000164800.
FOR POKEMON SUN USERS: RENAME THE "3" FILE IN a\0\8\ TO "2"

Todo:
  • Re balance according to feedback.
  • Re balance Pokemon move sets and stats once tools are available.
  • Add in last few Pokemon. (Some starters, legendaries, etc.)
  • Finish documentation on the various changes.

Credits:
  • Creators of the tools pk3DS, extract repack, etc.
  • Drayano, for being a cool guy that's better at hacking than I am
Sellout:
I'm a filthy sellout. Follow me on twitter to know when major updates for the romhack come out. https://twitter.com/KobeRobsahm

I'm pretty noobish with these sort of things, and haven't had much luck with getting this to work on pokemon sun. I have luma3ds v 6.6 CFW, and a backup of pokemon sun version 1.1 . I was wondering which method of installing this pokemon sun mod would be, and if there was a way to have the steps to applying this mod in the most noob-friendly way possible.

Use the CFW method, I believe its the first.

Well I'm curious about the arm9loaderhax.bin. I don't know if i should use a new/different version, seeing as the bin file is specific to the CFW. I'm using aurora wrights luma, so I don't want to mess anything up, ya know?

Just updated the instructions, hope you find it easier. I agree that part was confusing.

Thanks a whole bunch for the help with this, I really appreciate it. I'm gonna start on modding pokemon Sun. I just started it, so i haven't even grabbed a starter poke. That should be ok, right? It isn't a CIA installation, so i'm not overwriting any data, just editing data on the fly when I run the software. right? O.o

Yeah everything should work out fine as long as you're not on version 1.1 of Sun.

So I deleted the 1.1 update for sun. If they make another update, like a 1.2, that actually makes fairly important changes ( 1.1 had some nice fixes, wish we could have those on rising sun) will there be a quick and easy way for you to update your mod to allow for an updated 3ds game? also when you use latest luma version, do you mean the normal build, or the hourly build? because I could have the ff4517e5 hourly, and i'm currently on b16d887.

Hourly build will work fine. And if they ever release a HUGE update, I'll do my best to match it

I'm noticing after loading the files onto my N3DS the boot time is a lot longer: going between software is taking about twice as long. :/ Anyone else get this? like i'll load a GBA VC, it takes a while to load, then i'll exit the software, and it also takes a while to get back to the home menu.

GBA VC always takes forever to load in my personal experience.

Hm. it seems longer. It could be the settings change in luma3ds. Btw, shouldn't the adventure guide at the start of the game change? I have the save from the vanilla sun, and then i added the saltysd files, then enabled external code on luma, so i figured it would have changed it to the good luck message. I'll find out if the mod stuck when i get a trainer passport.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Also, If I decide to disable the patch, what exactly will happen when I start up pokemon sun again? will any pokemon base stats go back to normal? the moves will stay but i'll have to delete them to trade ofc, but I don't want to crash my game! :P

My youngster Joey was a youngster jimmy, lv 3 alolan rattata. I'm assuming I don't have this set up correctly? I wonder where I messed up...

Can I ask you a question, how did you add new static encounters? Are you using pk3ds?
Also how did you add new trainer battles for Anabel for example. Scratch that, it seems you just edited an existing trainer. Have you find a better way to do it?
Also is it possible to add new totem battles?

uninstall version 1.1 and it should work as the rom hack is not compatible with 1.1

Have you changed Lusamine's team in Ultra space to an all Ultra beast one? Pheromosa would be the ideal lead too.

Would you change the Ultra beast fights in the Looker quests to 2 vs 1 fights like SOS or totems?

you can't change the ultra beast battles as they are static encounters but I believe the lusamine version 2 battle should be all ultra beast or something like that

Can someone help me? I'm trying to get this via the HANS method, but when I select Pokémon Sun from HANS, it does some stuff, then goes back to Homebrew. Have I done something wrong?

So I did all that, but my game didn't turn into rising sun. With luma I just move files from the source provided to the folders I need, change the luma settings to run external code and region free games, then boot up my N3DS, load pokemon SUN, and i should have rising sun. I shouldn't have to delete my save file, but youngster joey was instead youngster jimmy with a lv 3 rattata, showing that the rom hack didn't stick.

paste code.ips (For sun users use the file named Rising Sun (instructions here) and rename it to code.bin and place it in the Sun title ID folder instead of a code.ips)
- create folder called SD:\\SaltySD\sunmoon\ and place the "a" and "data" folders from the GARCS.zip in there.
- NOTE: If you are playing Pokemon Rising Sun, rename the "2" file in a/0/8/ to "3". This will make wild encounters work.

So the code.ips is meant to be code.bin? different extension names? clarification would be swell. Also, the "2" file in a/0/8 was already named 3 in the GARC files. Not sure if it should have been.

UPDATE: So i found the error. making a titles folder in luma and then putting the code.bin in the title folder doesn't work for me. I have a code_sections folder in the luma folder at the root of my SD, so i renamed the code.bin to the title id.bin, then moved that binary file into code_section. rising sun patch worked like a charm. got a lv. 5 rattata, and started my adventure 2.2 on 1/17/2017. Sorry to have bothered you so much for a 5 step hack that I failed to install twice from errors I made. :/
