It already looks like the price drop for the PlayStation 3 is having an effect on sales. After official confirmation of the price drop, sales at Amazon.com for the 60GB PS3 have spiked by 2800% and have overtaken the Wii and Guitar Hero: Rock the 80s as the best selling item in the Video Game category.

While it's hard to judge the success of the price cut in only one day, it's interesting to see how many people are snapping up the new $499 PS3. A price cut of $100 is not insignificant but the PS3 is still the most expensive console, and industry watchers were curious to see just how many people would be moved to purchase the console after a 'mere' 17% price drop.

Judging from the early evidence though, the answer is 'a lot.'

To be honest, as overhyped as the PS3 is, with a 17% price drop and the current AU$-US$ exchange rate I would maybe think about buying one possibly...

They're still $999(!!) here...

Last I read, it was struggling to outsell the GBA...

It's easy to jump that high of a percentage when you were only selling 7 originally.

Well, I hear a Xbox360 price drop has a pretty good chance of being announced at E3, if not, soon after...

ahhh that's so annoying - why bother quoting a percentage without giving the number of the actual amount of consoles sold??

If I had an HDTV, and if blu-ray was the established standard for all movies, I just might buy one. Right now that's all the PS3 is to me, a blu-ray player. If something like FF13 was out right now, then I might cave in and get one.

2800% seems about right, I've been seeing PS3 sell 1 a day or less from Futureshop, and I saw 29 sell today. There are still 2.5 hours left in today so maybe Futureshop can possibly go 3700% (Which means PS3 is sold out)

This is just clever marketing by Sony. 2800% increase my ass, they just want to start a "everybody's getting it" hype going with doctored statistics. Face it, the PS3 is a big ugly gameless piece of shit and nobody wants one.

I couldn't care less about a PS3 price drop.
Honestly, really honestly, I wouldn't get one even for free, because there's only so much time that I can spend on gaming and getting another system, with not even one game that I like would be pointless.
The Xbox360 elite price drop looks promising though....
I recently started thinking about getting one, mainly because I like old school games and I've seen lots of remakes on live with incredibly improved graphics, like the original Prince of Persia and Street Fighter II.
That's the stuff I like !
Even though I am a Nintendo fan boy, I would never download a virtual console game, but those xbox360 remakes.......oh boy, can I even mod chip an xbox360 Elite ? That would be awesome !
By the way, by the time I finish Metroid Prime 3 I would probably get an Xbox360 elite, this way I will put my Sharp Aquos HD tv to a good use
