Anyone who is involved in web servers/services will tell you that it is impossible to offer free servers for anything over a prolonged period of time. They will eventually either shut down or the service is not going to be good. Still remember how slower nintendo's offerings were compared to the xbox live service (at that time). It might be better today, but if you do not pay for a service you cannot demand the level of service you need.

They anticipate lots of sales which is good, so they want you to pay for multiplayer. Cannot see the problem in that. If you have any doubts look up how much it costs to run a basic run of the mill server monthly. Then think how many servers they need for thousands of users demanding low ping times. They can offer stuff with it. I barely ever play online with my Ps4 yet i still have a Psn+ account for all the freebies. They pretty much pay for it.

Yes, but it's Nintendo. It's not like they have a glowing history of excellent online services. They haven't exactly announced an array of multiplayer titles that would benefit from low ping either. Let's see, from the titles they've announced all I can think of is ARMS, Smash (has that even been announced?), MK and Splatoon. All of these are niche titles and will never be even nearly as popular as Battlefield or Call of Duty. Nintendo is more than capable of running a few servers at no cost to the user, especially when their initial console offering is so abysmal.

I do not disagree with your thinking in the way of numbers. However, i still cannot see who is going to pay for upkeep and maintenance of the servers anyway. I am like that as a person, i prefer to have a known "contract" of i give you x you give me y and make it formal by way of money rather than give me a half assed experience (not talking just about nintendo, but in general) that is free or cheaper. I would not care for example if netflix was going to be more expensive for a couple of pounds if that means faster access and less issues, just to make a point.

Perhaps the very fact that they did not have a glowing history of online services is the key they are asking for money this time around, so they can make a world class one?

And who was paying it for the DS, 3DS, Wii, WiiU?
If you think that subscription is necessary you are living a lie.
They just want more $, its really as simple as that.

If they want 50$ for a mobile trash game Binding of Issac, believe me those server costs are more than covered.

Ok, i am living a lie. Somehow, i am working in the web industry for 15+ years, paying for servers all my professional life and suddenly i decided to troll a board of friendly nintendo users just to make my point.

To put it simply, answer me this, with conclusive hard evidence: WHO was paying for it for the DS, 3DS, Wii, WiiU? Find out where the cash came from and let me know cause last time i checked, a one time software that costs £30-50 does not pay for a server for a long time. I do not disagree that they were probably subsidising it, all i am saying is, try to find a rock hard way to pay for it no matter what the sales are. Even if the price of the game subsidised the server price, by giving 5-10% off the game price to maintain the servers, i would *still* prefer to pay full price for a game and full price for the service as i do not care 1 monkey's ass about any multiplayer whatsoever, so taking money from me to put it where i will not enjoy it seems like an inefficiency to me. :)

As to the fact they want more money, it is obvious. They can do much better to get more money though, but this is another story...

You are a drop in an ocean compared to Nintendo. They own the servers they dont rent them like you do. That fact alone makes your statement pointless.

Also 60$ for a game is more than enough to cover the costs. The servers dont need to be top notch for Mario Kart or Splatoon. Its not WoW world championship PvP, LoL tournament or CS:Go where sub-miliseconds count.
Also the their servers dont need to support the one hundreth of the playerbase that the games above need to...(talking about current consoles, dunno how popular switcheroo will be)

once again, online is optional. You and me both know that all the people who complain about it being too expensive plan to turn around and pirate all their games, just because online is paid doesnt mean you have to pay. Besides, LAN is free.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Don't worry. $300, 3 games at launch (or was it 2?), $80 for 2 joycons, $70 for a pro controller, about as powerful as a gaming tablet, 720p screen, 2.5 hour battery life and paid online. Oh also, an incredibly cringe-worthy press conference. It's practically destined to fail. We'll get a 3DS successor eventually but this is most certainly not it.
- 5 games at launch
- 60 for pro controller
- 3-6 hour battery life
- the conference was fine
- lol no

you better have your body ready, if you dont buy switch online services reggies gonna come bust down your door and shove a gameboy down your throat until you buy.

I lived in Japan for a while, so I do have connections to being able to hire some...assistance for protection. Heh. But I digress, already preordered the console and Switch version of Zelda :P

Wrong.

- 2 games at launch. Only 1 2 Switch and Zelda are confirmed. Look on the Switch page on nintendo's website. Only those 2 games have the March 3rd release date.

- $70 for the pro controller. https://www.vg247.com/2017/01/13/ni...t-you-70-joycon-and-other-peripherals-priced/

- 2.5 - 6 hour battery life. So if you play on full brightness etc you're not gonna get more than 3. http://www.theverge.com/circuitbrea...do-switch-specs-32gb-720p-screen-battery-life

- Lol, if by fine you mean translators failing hard, people wearing retarded lab coats and a dude literally showing one illustration of a video game concept, sure it was fine.

As to the fact they want more money, it is obvious. They can do much better to get more money though, but this is another story...

What about steam and thousands of online games with no monthly costs? PSN that operated for years without pay subscription? Sure there are costs, but don't think for a minute that Nintendo can't afford them. The real problem here is mostlikely corporate. They didn't make enough money with the WiiU for the share holders, now they are looking for means to make more.

There is absolutely nothing appealing to me with the Switch. Price, performance, library, are all turn offs for me. My galaxy note 5 is just about a better machine than the switch. Much higher resolution VS 0.5 inch smaller screen. I can play for hours non stop , and still finish the day with enough battery. With so many 3rd party developpers that no longer support nintendo, the library is not likely to be much bigger than the failed wiiu. The only reason I might buy it , is when it gets hacked (just like i did with the wiiu). Even with a hacked wiiu , I think i've only played 5 titles , because there is nothing good on the wiiu. Obviously to each is own, but not even zelda can trigger some sort of excitement on my part. I despise the fact that nintendo wants a family oriented console. They seem to forget that those that made them who they are now , are those that played their games in the 90s. All of us teens back then are nearly in their forties now, yet they focus on games for kids. They used to make great hardware and software. Now , hardware is a joke, because they say they want to focus on content, yet the content is targeted for infants, with gadgets. With their hardware so weak , nobody ports their software to it. Just look at how many AAA games release for PC, Xbone, Ps4 , and nothing ever comes out on wiiu. This is probably nintendo's last console anyways. They will just end up releasing zelda, pokemon, mario on other hardware instead. They've already started with their most iconic character, Mario, so..

And their previous online experiences did not give me any reasons to think that paying a monthly fee for online would be justifiable. That boxing game.. looks so awful ... Where do they get the idea that we still want to wiggle wiggle to play games? That fad worked for like 6 months on wii, and by now its long gone. I honestly never met a single person that enjoys motion controls and would play hours wiggling their arms around to move. And that trailer.. so silly.

To all those interested , enjoy and have fun! I personnally , just don't care about it at all. Even zelda , will be the same old useless fucking adventure. Collect pieces of hearts , rupees , boring and useless quests , stupid audio clips like Navi's "Listen" and link just making noises. If they ever make zelda a real adventure , and not just linear progress, then maybe i'd play it again. Spoiler: Link starts with no sword , no shield , then you must find a wooden sword , shield , buy a wallet , run around collecting rupees that no longer are of any use 5 hours into the game. Rinse , repeat , let's make another Zelda in 5 years..

I think you're dreaming. Didn't 3DS launch at $350? And it was considerably less impressive than what's in Switch for $300.
