I noticed the app still comes pre-installed on most newer consoles, is still installed on older ones (at least never removed on any of mine), yet is discontinued on startup.
now im wondering:
1) why did they kill it
2) What was its actual intended purpose
3) is it possible to bypass this message to actually use it, assuming i still can?

edit:
SORRY, wrong forum, posted to the wrong one cause i have multiple tabs open. Its probably useless to post in that other forum too, so im gonna just go ahead and just leave this here to not DP

I'm not exactly sure WHY they disabled it, but I do have a feeling they did because it wasn't getting much adoption, and it wasn't worth keeping the service alive if nobody cared.

It's original purpose to my knowledge was to allow you to go to a Nintendo Zone location (usually fast food places) and try out demos, see game trailers, and other stuff.

That seems pretty nice, but how many did they actually set up?

because it was pretty much useless, seeing as most places that were classed as nintendo zones just had free wifi you could just connect and go download demos from the eshop anyway........so it had no real use, they could have used it a bit better doing nintendo zone exclusive demos/offers or something, but for the most part it just acted like a crippled web browser

Exactly. This

The service was probably too an hassle to maintain it.. In Nintendo zones you could Get some content like Pokémon mystery gifts, and demos..
Iirc you could also surf the web on your console with it's connection

I tried it a few times.

You could watch full episodes of Pokémon. I think that was about the only thing that was interesting, but you could do that on Pokémon Company website too. So pretty useless.

So the main reason is the fact that anything that can be done on a nintendo zone, could be done anywhere else, correct?

Pretty much. I think they used to do distributions in Animal Crossing, but you didn't actually need the app, just be at the location of a Nintendo Zone. I think people said if you just change you router SSID to att or something that Nintendo Zone uses and not have a password then you can even do it at home.
