Need something to look forward to in 2017? Arc System Works, the company that acquired the rights to the series last year, has announced that Double Dragon IV will be released on January 30th for PS4 and Steam.

According to the press release, the original staff's planner, composer and designer are involved in its development, ensuring a classic feel to this new entry:

Hopefully you won't require a CRT TV to play...

The game is priced at 800 yen ($6.84 US). Quite affordable!

Am I the only one who thinks this shouldn't be 8 bits?

Double Dragon was cool at it's time, but that doesn't mean it should stay like that forever

Well Double Dragon Neon is also on Steam, not sure about other platforms. It's pretty fun and fulfills that need for newer graphics. Makes sense to release this one in its original form, especially because you can charge so much less that way.

The fact that Double Dragon Neon was released is why I expected a better visual of this

This should be a Vita title.
I was thinking the same thing :P
Double Dragon was on NES and SNES so if any, it should be 3DS.
I was also thinking the same thing?
Am I the only one who thinks this shouldn't be 8 bits?
Again was thinking the same thing.

Do i need to repeat myself??? SAME THOUGHTS .

I had expected a double dragon neon 2, add more characters, 4 player co-op, maybe 2 characters from Double dragon 3 :P
Online modes or whatever, could have been something, never been disappointed in a wayforward made game ever! :D

Based on what i know, arc systems works, has been making games of the Kunio series for few years now, with River city soccer hooligans and Super Dodgeball brawlers and River city super sports on NDS and even River city tokyo rumble on 3DS (Recently published) All the games seem to have the same graphical syle of those HUGE NES sprites, even though some had full 3d models, but i guess that's the thing about this series, those NES Sprites, even a ps3 game from the series had them, and few games within this decade had them like mega man 9 and 10, Shovel knight and shantae pirate curse, not that NES looking sprites is a bad thing but i just don't get why is all over the place, make impressive HD game double dragon neon, make NES style game (NOW)

I didn't know what to expect from this, all i know is says double dragon 4, the only one i remember was a SNES game which plays much different than this trailer. I had either hoped for
  • Double Dragon neon 2 by wayforward games
  • Double Dragon fighting game in same style of Guilty gear or Blaz blue
  • A cross over game with the River city (also known as Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-Kun) series
Either one of those i would have been on board for as long as it wasn't disappointing. I remember Hard corps uprising on ps3, it was a Contra game made by this company Not konami and i liked it, it felt weird but fun, a contra game made like guilty gear? Run, double jump, wall jump, air dash, Vault over objects, rush tackle, is like a fighting game parkour shooter all in one. It wasn't bad at all. Then i remember Dragon ball z Extreme botuden on 3DS, it was made by arc system works, and i was diappointed. How they mess up a fighting game like that? They made guilty gear and blaz blue for years, two main flagship titles of the company fighting game series, i didn't expect the game to play like it did. Probably why they released the snes Dragon ball z 2 super botuden, cause namco be like sorry to us. :creep:

After seeing the trailer, and hoping there is some great cool stuff like game modes, (NOT BEING TOO HARD) And maybe some good combos, i hope is worth the money. I do wonder why use the second game on NES Sprites, instead of something else, like snes or genesis, turbo graphix 16 even, Not NES sprites, and more specific, double dragon 2, i get that people like that one best of the 3 on nes but something a bit more defined would have been better.

This is awesome. I'm disappointed Arc Sys isn't going with a really high quality 2D style, but at the same time, 8 Bit is much MUCH preferable to hokey 2.5D. Hope we see more franchise revivals like this in 2017

Explain this please?
Using 3D models in 2D stuff has always bothered me. Looks cheap imo. King of Fighters 14, Sonic 4, Mighty no 9, they all look like they have this weird film of plastic on the character models. It's ugly. Some developers do it right, of course, like Donkey Kong Country TF, and New Super Mario Bros (though Mario World's sprites are arguable much better looking...) but it's rare to see it used succesully.

So you mean making a game using 3d models but is obvious is not a 3D game, cause is plays on 2D plane, is that what you mean, like most fighting games, Street fighter 4 and 5 Marvel vs capcom 3, Guilty gear xrd. I mean i guess, but is been like that for long time. Look at the back ground in virtual fighter, sonic the fighters, is all 2D but is 3d models, yeah it probably look as weird as cel shade games like Jet set radio and wind waker, I honestly dunno how some of the graphic effects work in the games.

If someone could explain it to me, i guess, if i had to explain from what i see, cel shade is 2D sprites that have a obvious outline (kinda like 3DS super smash bros) and are able to make the apperence of 3D models using shading tricks to give the idea of cartoon looking 3d. In guilty gear xrd, it looks much like a 2D sprite game but the camera angles change a lot making it look like a 3D game, (i wish all anime look like this game, is amazing) Those graphics engine like unreal engine and autodesk scaleform and whatever really make it seem great.

Then there games that seem reverse, Using 2D sprites in 3D enviroment instead of 3D sprites in 2D envirolment. Games like breath of fire IV and Grandia on playstation and marvel vs capcom 2 are 3 examples, most of the graphics are 3D except for the characters and enemies. It look kinda like Who framed rogger rabbit, but in a funny way. It was both weird and cool at the same time back then but i guess the point is we shouldn't have stuff like that before, i guess the stuff exist cause system limitations and tricks to give better presentation? I dunno to be honest.

I know you mentioned before you are a fan of 2D graphics more than 3D right? We discussed this when they decided to make the 3DS Ace attorney games using the same graphics engine the Marvel vs capcom 3 for psvita uses the MT Framework i think is called. You described the character expressions as not as good in 3D as it is in 2D, which make sense. The games kinda represent the art of a anime and 3D aren't really used to show off such exaggerated expressions like they do in the game.

So it is going to look like a SNES title and not something like Neon. Fuck.

I've always liked streets of Rage better anyways. Neon was the shit though.

I'm actually glad they went with an 8-bit style instead of high-def graphics, only in that it keeps development costs and the final price down. Double dragon doesn't have the sort of gameplay I'd shell out $15+ for, so this way I can experience a game designed by professionals and industry veterans for ~$6.50. There've been too many times with indie games on Steam where I've experienced shiny, beautiful, and intricate graphics in a relatively pricey title only for the gameplay to suffer from a lack of depth, or for the level design to poorly complement the core gamplay, or for enemy balancing/design to be lacking, or for the game to be very badly paced, or some other factor that I've taken for granted to suffer. Personally, a tightly designed game can and has made me fall in love with any art style or character design, so if this turns out to be a very professionally polished product whose cost is kept down because of artistic shortcuts (however heavy they may be), I'll be more than happy to play it.

Everybody loves to mention DDN but the original devs had nothing to do with that version. That was Wayforward games in the west. These are the original developers in japan making a true sequel. Give it a chance. Megaman 9 was one of the best in the series and we all now if capcom did this same shit and released an X9 nobody would complain.
