'lo gents!

I've got a quick question for you all - when you've made a backup copy of a game (say, Wii Sports) or burned the WiiKey Setup ISO to a disc... does Rawdump 2.0 recognize it as being "official"?

Basically - I installed a Wiikey, but it's not working. I had the soldering done professionally, so I know it's not that. I'm worried that the discs I've burned for it are just lousy burns/media... So, if I backup Wii Sports, and put the backup disc into my DVD Drive (The same one I used to rip the original game) should RawDump 2.0 recognize it as "SPORTS PACK FOR REVOLUTION" or whatever? Because the few I've tried burning so far aren't recognized by RawDump, and, well, that just doesn't make sense to me.

If someone would pop in a backup of one of their games and let me know (or, if you want to be really helpful - the Wiikey install disc) I'd really, really appreciate it. Thank you for your help!

Um... Let's see here...

(Pulled directly from when I bought the thing from Newegg)
SAMSUNG 18X DVD±R DVD Burner With 12X DVD-RAM Write, LightScribe Technology Black IDE Model SH-S182M/BEBE - OEM

I'm using Nero Ultra 7.3.9.0(The newest one - not sure about the version number, as I'm not on my home computer) and selecting finalize and all that stuff. I've tried burning both the setup discs 1.2, and 1.0. I don't think I've tried 1.1. I've also tried burning a backup of Zelda (I only own Zelda and Wiisports)

I've tried burning them with the following discs/speeds:
Verbatim DVD-R 16x (Burned at both 4x, and 16x)
Office Depot DVD+R 8x (Burned at both 4x and 8x)

I've tried a few others, but I didn't finalize those discs(it was before I was using Nero) so those're worthless. Any guesses?

(BTW - nice to meet you guys - and I really do appreciate your help)

Hmm, looks like indeed your burner, speeds and media seem cool. I'm not at home at the mo to test out my Wiikey disc on Rawdump. I'm sure someone however will beat me too it, people are very helpful here.

About finalising you DVDs,I'm not sure on that one. As far as I understand, the disc should be finalised in order to play on the Wii. However, I'm not sure if you need to finalise a disc image (Any thoughts anyone?). Personally, I've just gone to Nero Express, selected burn disc image and off it goes. I've never considered finalization.

Good luck!

I'd guess Nero Express would finalize it by default, as it would most likely try to have as much compatibility and the less hassle for the user as possible.

As for replying to the OP, from what I've heard, though it never worked for me... simply making an image of the backup, using Alcohol 120% or the like, would be enough to copy it back to your computer.

And about your installation, since your media and burner seem good enough, I'd say it's either the chip itself, the soldering, or simply bad luck...

I hope this goes a little ways toward solving your problem,

Nero always gave me bad results with Wii disks. I have tried several programs and eventually tried what many people here recommend: imgburn. You'll find it right away on Google, and it's free.

RawDump can't re-dump a game that is already a copy. Just use imgburn to make a disk image. You can then burn that image again. If imgburn has a hard time (read: can't) make an image off of the disk, that's a sure tipoff to why the Wii isn't reading them.

At any rate, I burn all my Wii games to some Tayo Yuden 8x certified disks at 8x with imgburn and they all work right away. This is of course with a different burner.

imgburn is pretty easy to use and it's a nice little program with a small footprint.

Download & try Img burn.

I've only ever used Imgburn and its never made any coasters, even on cheapo, crappy DVD-r that cost £5.50 for 100!
Although my burner is a pioneer 112D

Burn at the speed the discs rated at. 8x or 16x usually for DVD-R
&
Try imgburn. Its a free download. Everyone seems to suggest good media & img burn so you're prob better using Verbatim discs but like I say, buy a pioneer 112D burner and as long as you use imgburn, you may get away with crappy discs. I do!

Actually, after reading through some forum posts, I realized the problem.

I have a new Wii.

Serial Number is LU 5164_____ whatever.

Basically, it was unmoddable from the start - I just didn't know.

...put so much bloody time into it and burning discs and what not.

...I'm really disappointed.

...thanks for your help everyone... looks like I'm just screwed, I guess...

Sorry for being so clueless, but question:

The chip in the above example is definitely not the Wiikey.

So, considering my Wiikey is already installed, what has to be done to those legs to get it working? Do I basically just sand down the chip (like in the picture) and then connect it to the three legs that are on the board? What do I do?

The original link i pasted shows that it can be done and it is definitely a wiikey, the last photo - you can see it, the chip in the top photos is of the actual drive chip which you need to solder some wires to.

This guide should help a bit more:

Wait a minute, you had this thing professionally installed and they didn't notice that the chip legs were cut?!

If not you might have one of the slow to show themselves D2C chip... again, something anyone who is modding Wiis should notice right away and tell you about.

Get a Tri-Wing screwdriver and crack that baby open and take some pictures for us.

I definitely unscrambled the iso - sure of that.

I haven't reopened it up to look at the legs, I'm just going based off of the serial number. I did buy the thing on June 16th, after all. I'm going to open it after work today to double check that the legs have been cut.

When I said "professionally installed" I meant "installed by a professional electrician" - the guy has no experience modding, but he can solder... well, like a professional. He had no problem doing the quick solder method.

Looking at the pictures for grinding down the chip - as well as the .pdf - my Wiikey is already soldered to the main board - is there any reason I couldn't simply grind down the chip (as shown in the guide) and reconnect each spot to its respective leg, which, through the original traces, are connected to the Wiikey itself? The Wiikey is soldered perfectly to the board already - if "reconnecting" the cut legs to the chip they originally went to would work, I'd sooner do that. Any ideas?

Ah, OK.

What you're suggesting is exactly what I would recommend. Of course, this is easily 5x more difficult than the installation of the WiiKey in the first place. But you're right, if you got the Wii on the 16th you're probably dealing with a cut legs model.

Excellent. I spoke with the guy and he's gonna give it a shot - he thinks he's capable, so should be all good. Awesome.

I'll update after I get it back from him - should be early next week (Monday or Tuesday).

Again, thanks for your help guys. It's great to find a forum with such friendly people. If all goes well, I'll be more of a regular here once I get my Wii back from him. Thanks again!

Just a quick update... I gave it back to the electrician with instructions on messing with the legs... he gave it back to me today, and it works.

...amazing stuff.

Thanks so much for everyone's help and support - would've been lost without you guys. Hopefully I'll be hanging around here more frequently now.

Thanks again gents :D
