Hm, I turned down brightness setting from 5 to 4 and now the top screen look pretty IPS to me while the bottom screen is still pretty bad. Notice the top right on the bottom screen, it's supposed to show three sun stones but it's completely washed out while the level name on the top right of the bottom screen is still pretty distinguishable. I don't know.

The reason I'm even wondering in the first place is because my current system is an American Majora's Mask N3DS XL and I'm eyeing a PAL FE Fates N3DS XL which is still available in some European online stores. The point being that since all of my current 3DS games are region NTSC and if my current system is 2 x TN, and I end up with a PAL Fates with a top IPS and the difference really is as big as some people make it out to be, then I'm sitting around with a pile of games that I'd have to play on the "lesser" system.

Anyway, pics with brightness set to 4 (auto-brightness still set to off):

I don't mean to interrupt, but if people need this test to figure out which version of display you have, then it doesn't really matter which one is it.

I'd do it if I had an SD card lying around.

Can I just use the SD card in my system and delete stuff afterwards?
Yes, but there's no need to delete anything.
Download the homebrew launcher and put on the sd card.
Download screeninfo.zip. Inside will be a Screeninfo.3dsx file. Make a 3ds folder on the SD card, and put screeninfo there.
Figure out a homebrew entry point that you can use to launch the homebrew launcher. smealum.github.io/3ds/ lists several

If it's a New 3DS, run screeninfo.3dsx, and then tell us.
If it's an old 3DS, no clue. You have to see from a significant angle.

Then you have no purpose being in this thread now don't you?

For comparison, here's my Pokémon Lunala dual TN on the left, first Fire Emblem upper TN, lower IPS and my second Fire Emblem with dual IPS at long last

So difference is obvious, my point is exactly that. If you dont see the difference without a tests, than it doesn't matter.

Checked my New 3DS XL and it has Top IPS and Bottom TN. Its ok for me because the Top Display is the more used Screen in Games :)

You lucked out as a lot of people get stuck with a lower IPS and upper TN and it's horrid to have your lower screen look better then upper one lol

another way to test your screens.

http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/black.php

i got it off gamefaqs, the op there says the following

"Go to that webpage on your 3DS web browser. On IPS screens you shouldn't be able to see the outline of the black squares until number 8 and up. On TN screens the squares should become apparent at 4 and up.

The IPS screens have darker blacks, so this a good way of testing.

Scroll down and check the difference on your bottom screen too, bottom screens are bound to be TN."

make sure to zoom in nicely or else you wont see the outlines on number 4/5/6/7 etc.

if you see the outlines (they appear grey, you will basically be able to see the whole bracket in grey color) if number 4/5/6/7 are all pitch black even when you zoomed it all the way in, then you have an IPS.

Edit: i am freaking out ! could someone with a TN display please test the website ?
and also someone with an IPS 3ds, on my og3ds the brackets are pitch black from number 1-7 on both top/bottom screens, on my og3ds XL they are also pitch black.

but on my n3ds xl i can see the grey outlines on number 6/7 from bottom screen only (the top screen the number 1-7 are pitch black) meaning my og3ds'es are IPS? and my n3ds xl a half TN/ips?

but the thing is, the weird thing here is , when i choose the black stock theme and tilt my 3ds'es , the og's both whiten way more than my n3ds xl.

like , my n3ds XL the screens dont go so white,it goes very little white'ish when i tilt it to the sides (looking at it from the sides etc.)

but my og's both clearly whiten from looking at them from sides.

I've noticed that even TN screens have some variance. Some are warmer toned and some are cooler toned. I got two BF black new 3DS, one for me and a friend and the warmer toned was confused as an IPS. I prefer how it shows color so I obviously kept that one for myself lol.
But both are definitely TN.

the one on the left looks better, i assume that is an ips.

the weird thing for me is, my og3ds are supposedly ips but the ips top screen of my n3ds xl looks like much better and colors are more vibrant.

Neither of the two in front are IPS at all.

EDIT: which funnily enough I pointed out in my post that people assumed one was IPS while the other TN
