I just finished a replay of the Metal Max Returns translation patch - it calls まんたんドリンク "Top-Off Drink", and as the limited inventory makes it much more important in that game, carrying that over would increase the impact of something in 2 ReLoaded... you know what if you've played it, and I don't want to spoil it otherwise.

I'm not sure what you're talking about in MM2:Re. I played it not that long ago, do you think you could put it in a spoiler tag, to remind me?
I might change the name of that item from "Fill-Up Drink" to "Top-Off Drink" then, for consistency (although it'll have to be written as "TopOffDrink" due to the character limit). They both sound equally good in my opinion. Also, since you just played it, do you remember what they called the wardrobe monster (the タンスゴン) in the translation of MMR? The best thing I could come up with for a localized name was to call it a "War Drobe", since I can't remember myself or find it written anywhere online, and I don't feel like replaying it myself.

Where does the wardrobe monster appear again? I remember the palette-swapped endgame version was called Killer Closet, but I can't remember the normal name.

Also, I was referring to when Ted Broiler drinks the まんたんドリンク during his boss fight

I'm not sure whether you're asking about MMR or MM3, but in MMR it was in that ruined dock area where you get the Lock Hacker, if I remember correctly, and in MM3 it's in the Doom Stadium.

And I remember that now, haha. Man, I hate that guy. His battle was so much harder than the actual final boss. I only managed to beat him by just stocking up on those invincibility items. Bias Vlad was a pushover in comparison.

The Returns patch just translates it literally as "Tansugon". I think "War-drobe" is a good name, though.

Broiler was actually easier in the SFC version - you could use the LOVE Machine to create a flame barrier, which meant Mohican Slugger was about the only dangerous move he had.

I wondered if they just didn't bother translating it. I'll go with War Drobe, then, to try and maintain the pun. Do you think there should be a hyphen in the middle ("War-Drobe") or not ("War Drobe")?

Sort of tangential to the thread at hand, but Toshiki Tauchi, lead dev of the Metal Max series, implied in this tweet that if he releases a Metal Max game on the Switch (or presumably any other non-region locked system such as the Vita), he will try to include an English-language option.

The patch is not complete, no. It's still quite a ways off, but progress is happening smoothly. I've tried to quantify it vaguely on the first page in terms of number of dialogue files 100% complete and ones partially translated, but the dialogue translation is still near the beginning of the game, a good ways through number 2 of the 5 main sections of the game, the first being completely translated but very short.

But honestly why Japanese cling to kanji for so long, if it had a phonetic script learning Japanese and translating games would a hell of a lot easier than now. How do you rank the difficulty of Japanese language compared to an analytic language like English and European synthetic languages? While English mostly lacks inflectional morphology it has complex syntax, 12 tenses and also for me it's an incredibly idiomatic language, a huge number of idiomatic phrasal verbs also, I think from major languages only Chinese varieties are even more idiomatic since it's an isolating language. The use of articles in English is also quite confusing with many exceptions. Japanese is agglutinating but it lacks genders(though has complex classifiers) and noun cases so its complexity lays mostly in the verb conjugation but from what I heard it's not that complex compared to many other agglutinating languages. How do you rank the complexity of japanese's verbs? Are aspects, moods, and voices very different compared to the european languages?

Honestly, I find a lot of Japanese a lot easier than most western languages, mainly because most rules are absolute. Conjugations have very few exceptions, unlike English for example, which is almost nothing but exceptions. (I before E, anyone?) If I didn't grow up speaking English, I'm sure learning the language would be hell.
The biggest difficulty of Japanese is reading and writing kanji. However, at this point, kanji is so entrenched in the language that it is impossible to separate. It would actually be much harder to read without kanji, for a couple reasons. First, written Japanese has no spaces between words, unlike English. The addition of kanji creates clear separations between different words, as each word generally starts with a kanji or two followed by a few phonetic sounds usually represented by hiragana. Without a new kanji to indicate a new word, the kana all run together and it gets difficult to figure out where one word ends and another begins, justlikeifyouwroteinenglishwithoutspaces. The second reason is that Japanese as a language is riddled with homophones. So many words sound exactly the same, and seeing the kanji lets you instantly differentiate them. In addition, even if you don't know the word or the specific pronunciation, you can often guess the meaning if you know the kanji. I definitely admit that kanji are a pain to learn, but they aren't all bad.
Kanji don't really impede my translating, anyway. I'm still not amazing at kanji, but I generally have an electronic dictionary open that lets me instantly look up anything I don't know just by copying it to the clipboard.

Hello, I think I'm stuck again, I could successfully extract and edit the vast majority of graphics in the game but I have problems displaying the Mini Games graphics , I explain.
The graphics of the mini games are compressed with LZ11 into three sections two are the graphics and the other is the palette?? After decompressing I could not view the graphics well with any of the formats and configurations of TileMolester, I have also tested Tilem, Tinke and other tools and nothing , I can see the graph, but very bad. Anyone have any idea how to view these graphics correctly. Please all the help will be welcome... I put an example of a file compressed and the same decompressed, so you can see what I mean.

These are images of the best that I could see the graphics.

Now changing the subject. About the progress on the graphic edition>
I still polish many things but I could say that the graphics edition is complete in 90% with the exception of minigames graphics so I Leave the problem above. On the other hand ,I think I'll need help on this, could someone tell me in which part of the game are shown the following graphics, I could not find them , maybe these are graphics that are not used in the game???

Sorry I can't help with the graphics stuff, hopefully someone else can.
As for where those specific graphics are used, I'm starting to think they are unused in MM3 as well. I do specifically remember them or ones very similar to them being used in the hotel in MM2R, though, so maybe the hotel was originally intended to be in MM3, but was cut and reused for MM2R?

Bump for interest! I loved Metal Max Returns, Metal Saga and have been waiting for AGTP's translation of MM2 for ages.

It's definitely awesome news that someone's working on MM3.

Immense kudos! :grog:

Those pics are definitely for some terminal or another. Could be any number of them.
Well, it can't be just any. It has to be one in a tall building, as the second picture is the control panel for the security system in one. The issue is that there are only a couple in MM3, and the only one it could really fit is the tower in Elurus. However, MetalFan has checked there and did not find it. I'm convinced it's just an unused graphic that they cut out of MM3 then later implemented in the hotel dungeon in MM2R.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
