Press Release
Detachable Controllers Reinvent Gaming

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- In an introductory video released today, Nintendo provided the first glimpse of its new home gaming system and revealed that it is called Nintendo Switch. In addition to providing single and multiplayer thrills at home, the Nintendo Switch system also enables gamers to play the same title wherever, whenever and with whomever they choose. The mobility of a handheld is now added to the power of a home gaming system to enable unprecedented new video game play styles.

At home, Nintendo Switch rests in the Nintendo Switch Dock that connects the system to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room. By simply lifting Nintendo Switch from the dock, the system will instantly transition to portable mode, and the same great gaming experience that was being enjoyed at home now travels with you. The portability of Nintendo Switch is enhanced by its bright high-definition display. It brings the full home gaming system experience with you to the park, on an airplane, in a car, or to a friend’s apartment.

Gaming springs into action by removing detachable Joy-Con controllers from either side of Nintendo Switch. One player can use a Joy-Con controller in each hand; two players can each take one; or multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options. They can easily click back into place or be slipped into a Joy-Con Grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, if preferred, the gamer can select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to use instead of the Joy-Con controllers. Furthermore, it is possible for numerous people to bring their Nintendo Switch systems together to enjoy local multiplayer face-to-face competition.

“Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America. “It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries.”

Developers can design their games supporting a variety of play styles, which gives gamers the freedom to choose an experience that best suits them. Some of the publishers, developers and middleware partners announcing support for Nintendo Switch are as follows:

so Wii don't rule them out, hUh? o well, I also don't see any room for backwards compatibility, so I guess they stay true to their statement that they don't abandon the wii u or 3ds YET....but I wonder how much time they will stick to it.
I honestly think this is going to be a case of what happened when they said the DS wouldn't succeed the GBA years ago.. they dropped that rhetoric almost instantly after release and it ended up being the successor. From what we know so far there is no reason to think the Switch wouldn't succeed the Wii U and the 3DS is getting too old to keep supporting itself too.

The NVIDIA Shield K1 tablet has a 3-5 hour gaming battery life so I wouldn't dismiss the Switch just yet...
And this supposedly has a chip with nearly 3x the power. Unless Nintendo somehow invented some huge capacity battery in a small package, the battery life will be trash.

Didn't know those fit in either the Wii U or 3ds :P

I was under the impression that since uses pascal architecture, it's possible to take even less juice than that...though it'll depend on the specifics, obviously.

that's exactly WHY i wrote "I wonder how much time they will stick to it", cuz if history teach us something, they will drop that rhetoric.

Because Tegra Chip and portability? It WILL replace the Wii U, be it a comercial success or not.

I still thinking if it's a touchscreen though...
THAT'ts gonna be a killer tablet for drawing.

More graphics power doesn't mean more power used...

A NVIDIA GTX 750 and a GTX 1050 both use around the same power but the 1050 is much more powerful...

The problem with hoping for backward compatability with Wii U or 3DS titles is that both systems had many games that required 2 screens to be utilized at once, one of which with a touch pad. The Switch appears to be just a handheld or a console on your TV, there does not appear to be touch controls on the screen, at least nothing was shown off to be, and there appears to be no way to have the Switch both be on your TV while also being able to use the handheld screen as well.

However, if there is a solution that Nintendo may offer for backward compatibility with Wii U or 3DS titles, perhaps the Switch will be able to connect to a Wii U Gamepad and/or a 3DS. Seems feasible to me, whether or not they did it though is the question, The Wii U didn't have a huge install base, so they may not have felt it worth it to allow it to connect just to play old games, but on the other hand, one would imagine that this system will see a Super Mario Maker title, and if that's the case, it practically needs a touch screen controller.

Bah I dunno, I need more info, I'm genuinely curious on the subject. Ultimately wont be a deal breaker if there is no connectivity like that, but I really can see some great benefits if they do have that.

Remember, Wii U DS VC games have the ability for 2 screens on one.. it'd still be pretty awkward though.

The strong third party support is pretty much the only reason I'd buy this. I got tired of playing the same rehashed top 5 sellers a while back. If they can offer more than Mario Kart 12 and Mario Party 15 then I might buy the first Nintendo system I've had in years.

I'm about to take a defensive position, since I dislike when people say this and I'm not a lurker anymore- what's so bad about formulaic games? It's not the same game each time, it's still fun and unique in some way. Each game improves upon the last, it's not like they're literally the same game or a DLC pack (well, ok, I agree with you about Mario Party, but not with Mario Kart and the rest of Nintendo's formulaic titles)

That's like saying "oh this console has something I can write something on it. EXPLOIT TIME!". Like how Xbox and Playstion have USB ports but you don't see exploits for those. The Wii U isn't even fully exploited sooooo
I wasn't saying that their will be an exploit just like that, but more on the lines of it will mostly likely happen overtime. Your right the wii u isn't fully exploited and neither is the 3ds. Yes the 3ds is more exploitable than the wii u but thats pretty much for obvious reasons.

Indeed it will happen (I'm not a pessimist who says it won't, I'm just saying it'll take a while) but that's a given for pretty much anything electronic that has reason to hack it.

Also, it isn't even confirmed if the Switch will have an SD slot yet (as far as I know), so that logic is even more wrong.
Yea i thought that whatever the dude was putting into the tablet form of the Switch was an sd card, but it could have been a game for it.
I don't know it just seems more likely that they will put an sd card slot on this system as well.

Pretty sure they would show someone putting a game in the console in the trailer over someone putting an optional third-party accessory (SD card, technically) into the console..

So yeah I get what you're saying. In fact all new art is inherently old improved and the same goes for gaming. It just seems like Nintendo doesn't really have an appetite for taking creative risks with their games, which for the most part is fine considering other consoles also have their go-to games (e.g. Gears of War 4). That makes them money each time and it helps solidify their brand. However where you can get some of the most creative games is through your third party support. Some of my favorite DS/GBA games were Phoenix Wright, Trauma Center and Advanced Wars, along with a lot of lesser known games like Hotel Dusk. All of which were third party.

With the advent of the 3DS I noticed that the selection of games in general for the Nintendo systems has noticeably fallen. This is probably due to several factors such as the rise in mobile phone gaming and the ability for development groups to get their games out to market with ease on online markets such as Steam. Nintendo's process to get games approved has started to become an achelies heel in their market share. Case in point: Axiom Verge was a Metroidvania game that would've been perfect for an Nintendo system, but due to the tumultuous nature of their red tape, it took entirely too long after their Steam release to finally get it approved. But I digress.

All in all I hope that third party support does truly return to Nintendo the way it once was.
