From the GBAtemp review:

"There's not even an options menu to customise settings, where an option to disable the automatic boot of the R4 on power-up would be welcome.

[and]

[in regards to skinning] It's a good start, but what you're not able to do yet, is change text colour, size or location. Hopefully they'll add more support in the future for more advanced skinning."

Has R4 fixed these in their updates yet? It's nothing critical, but I'd really like it if they did. I was going to get an M3DSS, but I've found better deals on R4's. Cyclo's announcment of their SDHC compatibility made me want to jump on board with them for a bit, but I really don't need over a gig or two of space and the R4 seems to be the best product out now.

cool

what are you looking for in a flash card

The r4 isnt always the best option it depends what you want to do.
I'm looking to replace a G6 Lite. All of my computers are Macs, so I have to work on the card at my friend's house. Really annoying. All I need out of the card is DS backups and that's more or less it. Maybe the occasional homebrew title.

Oh, which reminds me; M3DSS has the same level of homebrew support, right?

well, as one of the owner of R4, of course i would say "Pick R4! It's the best up until now!!" But then again, i'm not exactly going to say that, but instead ask you this, are you buying the card because you want to play or because you want to customize the card? Most of the time, i use it to play game so i don't bother much with customizing. However, since the R4 has the support of different skin every month, i like it much more.

Sure, customizing it is good and great but in the end, are you going to spend most of your time changing and re-customize your favourite settings?

Seriously, I cannot complain about my R4. I freaking love it!

Can't find much wrong with it to be honest. It does everything I want it to do, simply and easily.

Why not go for the N-card then it has 100% compatibility and it also supports homebrew, auto dldi patching, No slowdown with any game(the r4 slows down with some games depending on what micro sd you have) you can skin the N-card(however the r4 skins look far better) the N-card is cheaper than the r4.

The downsides slow writing times, you need to use slot 2 to transfer files, you need to pick your save type(no big deal you can download the latest save type, there no soft reset or cheat function.

I know for a fact that I'm going to make up a few skins, but that's all I really want out of it. Just so I have something nice to look at in the five to ten seconds before I start up a game.

Why not go for the N-card then...
The R4 seems to have a much better reputation, plus I'm not a big fan of built-in memory after my G6 Lite. Yeah it's real fast, but so is microSD. And again, I only own Macs, and I've read in several different places that the N-card needs a PC to update the firmware.

Like buddy said, in the end, you don't skin, you don't customize, you turn it on, play some games and turn it off....

The R4DS does that, and cheap. Does WIFI, does every game I have ever tried.

I have no complaints, and would buy a R4ds again.. I like it better then the M3, mainly because the bios changes come first... why buy the clone?

i have no basis whatsoever for this claim, but im guessing cyclo is going to be , at the very least, $55. a more realistic guess would be 80-90...

I would get the R4. 2 gb is plenty, and u could (probably) get 2 R4's instead of 1 cyclo.

Divineo.com is selling the CycloDS Evolution for $54.99, and they say it ships within 3 days.

Edit: They also say the ETA for their delivery is June 12th, so barring an early delivery, there is no way it will ship in less than six days.

If your using a mac make sure to pick up Hankchill's Rominator for DS.

@ the issues you mentioned:

R4's Autoloading

I can't really see why this is an issue, you have the option of booting the GBA slot from the R4 Menu (along with a funky border), you'll hardly need to change DS settings (and just need to remove the card if you do) and Pictochat is the most useless thing ever, if your in the same room to them I see no benefit in writing a message to them.

R4's Fonts/Skinning

As lagman said, text colour can be changed. But seriously, you spend like 30 secs in the R4 Menu and then your in the game, the Skins now look awesome and I doubt a few font issues are going to bother you. Seriously.

Edit: Removal of Idiocy.

^ Xeijin, that was some smart editing, I got the originial in my email

I wasn't asking about the Mac compatibility thing, just stating the situation, I realize the M3DSS is an R4 clone. I took a look at Rominator the first time you mentioned it and I'll be getting it once I've got the card. Oh yeah, I got the R4/Japanese Kingston 1GB microSD deal from DealExtreme. The autoload and font things weren't issues, just questions. Believe me, I realize that I'll barely see the R4 menus, but I'm a graphic designer by trade and artist by nature. I have to skin it

And thanks for all the help, I kind of fell out of the flashcart scene last year, so it's nice to get an update on what's going on.

Yep I'm starting to wonder if I can even read these days.

About the skinning, I'm the same. While not quite a graphic designer, I've been Photoshoppin' for a few years now and consider myself decent at it. I also had (more importantly, my own!) and it dosen't bother me as such. Heck I was even planning to get a custom skin from decalgirl.com.

I've loved my r4 ever since I got it, the cyclods shows very promising features. If I were you i'd wait for the cyclo. Heres hoping to more features being added to the r4 when the cyclo is released.

Do yourself a favor and wait for the Cyclo to get released, then see if it works as it's supposed to and get one, the R4 is good... but far from great, the spring system is a pain, it will ALWAYS brake sooner or later, sooner in my case.. after 3 damn days of use... if you ask around you'll see that there's people who are already on their 4th or 5th R4 already, it's most unreliable

On the pros side it has great compatibility, decent support, really easy to use just drop the files on the microsd and that's it, it will create the save the first time you load the game, the so called automatic save detection is actually non existent, the thing is it sets a huge 512KB save for all games so there won't be any problems... but still you don't have to worry about saves, the soft reset system is pretty neat as is the cheat system

But i would really wait for the cyclo if I were you, the sdhc support alone is enough reason for that.
