All right, so when I test my internet speed I get about 25-30 mb/s download and around 5 or so mb/s upload, but in reality I get around 5 total mb/s download. What's the cause of this? The modem/router speed?

Try connecting directly via ethernet and check the speed again.. if there is a dramatic increase, then you need to more than likely change your wifi settings/channel etc
Just to clarify, I live with my dad and he has the internet set up, but knowing the cause of this and how to help it could help me help him and then both of us.
Anyhow, it is connected via an ethernet cable going from the room with the router/modem to the room with my PC. So could it still be an outdated/slow router/modem?
When you test your Internet speed via speedtest are you aware that you will get speeds in megabits not megabytes?
Really? I wasn't aware of that at all actually, thank you so much for that information. I didn't want anyone paying for high speed internet when we're only getting a small bit of it. That does clear things up a lot.
Your speed will be as fast as the slowest link in the chain. There are some ways to make it as fast as possible on your end, but sometimes the speed problems aren't on your end. Could be the ISP (Internet Service Provider), could be a variety of things out of your control. Follow the advice of everyone else, and see where that gets you. When in doubt, email your provider and ask them, after trying all these things.
What this person says. 12 megabytes per second is eight times the speed of 12 megabits per second.
Where are you downloading. Most websites throttle your download speed.
I would try to pop a highly seeded torrent (maybe a linux distro, or windows for that matter). If you are still seeing 500kb/s then something is a bottleneck in your system.
I personally have 100Mb/s down and when downloading DOOM from steam after a month or so of it being out, I only pulled 80.
Even with that, it wouldn't explain the discrepancy. I would expect him to say 2 or 3mb/s down if that were the case.

100? nice! I'm used to rural living, where 2-5Mb is suspiciously fast. You on the mythical fiber I hear so much about?
And I agree, it probably depends on what where the original poster is downloading things from. they could be downloading things from US servers or something farther away.
So, you're running the speedtest from your computer, it's giving you those results, then you try and torrent/download something from a webpage on the same computer, and the speed is showing up as around 5Mbs? Just to clarify.
@blax722 actually cleared things up for me. The speed test shows 30 megabits per second and my download speed is roughly 3-4 megabytes per second. Bits are roughly 8 times that of a byte so my speed is normal- that was what I wasn't getting.

One other thing to consider is distance to the servers. Speedtests automatically connect you to the nearest test server. Download sites won't have as many local servers so sometimes you'll be connected to a more distant server for your download, which will make a noticeable difference in speed, especially if some of the "hops" your data passes through are busy.
The speedtest site you use does matter.
When I do speedtests, I found that Xfinity's Speedtest works the best for people under Charter,Centurylink, or Xfinity (Comcast).
the speeds shown are always near the correct bandwidth amount and helps to find out if wireless connections are the problem and not the connection speed. for people who only use the Internet and do no computer to computer file transfers, I use this to determine wireless performance under normal use.
This is no substitute for determining actual WiFi throughput but for people who stream and check emails, it is a lot faster than benchmarking the wireless thoughput.
for phones however, I have only had good luck with Vodaphone's Net Perform app for Android.
