I clearly must be retarded because i cant get this to work

So from what I understand, put the anim folder in root, make a folder named 0 in anim and put an animation file in it, rename my arm9loader hax to arm9payload in root and drop the arm9loaderhax file from the zip and thats it right?

I just keep getting a black screen

The renamed one goes into the anim folder. The downloaded to the root.
The downloaded will act as a forwarder after playing the animation

Yep, did it, still get a black screen

So once more, the downloaded arm9loaderhax in the root

anim folder, with renamed arm9loaderhax.bin as arm9payload and a file named calibrator. Also is a folder named 0 with anim and bottom_anim and config.

anything im missing? Do i need to have 10 folders 0-9 regardless if i only plan to use one animation?

This makes it act like I don't have screen-init (I do; I checked).
What build of a9lh are you using? If it's Aurora's latest just toss _si on the end of the arm9loaderhax

its arm9payload.bin not arm9payload. And you only need the 0 folder

its arm9payload.bin not arm9payload. And you only need the 0 folder

so it specifically needs the .bin at the end regardless if its already in bin format?

Yes, the .bin indicates the format.
This makes my 3DS power on, then off a split-second later. I'm using Aurora's latest with screen-init (here, screeninit.7z).
Aurora's current repo has a merged screen-init. Payloads named arm9loaderhax_si.bin should enable screen init

Try renaming arm9loaderhax.bin to arm9loaderhax_si.bin

turns on then immediately turns off

edit: So uh, any more steps to take? Should i just take screen shots of my root and anim folder contents?

And also, I read something about ulma being removed in the github page. Im assuming this means bootanim9 doesnt work with it?

1) I don't know how/why, but I don't know what you mean when you say arm9payload.bin. What file is it we're supposed to rename to that? Or is it a link somewhere that I can't find?
2) Does it matter whether I'm using screeninit or noscreeninit?

1) arm9payload.bin is your old arm9loaderhax.bin that BA9 is replacing
2) yes, you need screen init

Warning: this was written really quickly.
I've had your same issue for ages, but you do need screen init for this to work. Download the latest luma and rename the arm9loaderhax.bin to arm9payload.bin and place into the anim folder on your SD card root. Get the latest SafeA9LHInstaller and putt it's arm9loaderhax.bin on your root, and then get the latest screeninit build of a9lh and put the stage 1 and 2 payloads into a folder named a9lh on your root. load SafeA9LH installer and press SELECT to update, and put your sd back into the computer. replace safea9lhinstaller with bootanim9's arm9loaderhax.bin and put your animations into the anim folder.

Will there ever be a little setup page implemented into this so that it is possible to selectively choose which animation is used?

I'm just asking because I like the possibility of multiple boot animations but I don't like how it just chooses a random one if there's more than one.

I could possibly make a CIA that allows you to choose which animation is used until it is run again, in which case you select a new one or reset it to be random.

It's definitely possible but I won't do it because BA is supposed to be something quick, something non-intrusive. There's a config menu though, so maybe I could do something like show the preview of current animations and you can cycle through them with L and R.
Unfortunately, my first period of tests has arrived so I'll be kind of inactive here for a few days/weeks.
