Pokemon GO Sets Century Stock Record

pokemon-go.jpg

The wildly popular mobile phenomenon Pokemon GO has set a new record for Nintendo, and it's a game it (technically speaking) didn't even make!

According to Bloomberg, Nintendo traded 476 billion yen ($4.5 billion) worth of shares on Friday, the biggest daily turnover for any company in the Topix index this century, effectively making history in the Tokyo stock market. The video game company giant surged 71 percent last week after the game became an instant hit, its largest weekly gain ever.

It seems like the hype for the game is reaping its fruits and it still has to get an official international release!

Yep, the apocalypse is coming quicker than we anticipated.

Yeah, I see it now; everyone on their phones, eyes glued to the screen, not aware of their surroundings... It would look like an apocalypse to someone who isn't on their phone. :P

And damn, Nintendo deciding to go on to the smartphone biz really was a brilliant decision after all.

This makes me sad for a few odd reasons. The first being that the app sucks. Badly. Its poorly designed and a resource hog. The second is that it's not even a game. All of the gameplay consists of swiping up to throw a ball. That's it. With results like this, Nintendo isnt going to want to make another Mario Galaxy or something that takes work or is actually fun. They are going to license out their properties into shitty ass phone apps like this one.

You totally missed the point.

Few will care if it's poorly designed or a resource hog. The first is subjective, and I disagree with you - the art is quite good and the Pokémon look better than on the console versions (because a phone is capable of displaying a resolution higher than any of Nintendo's consoles BY FAR). It is a resource hog, but that's why powerbanks exist. Chances are you already have one and if not, they are relatively cheap.

The main point of this game is that it is a nostalgia trip for whoever played the original GB games back in the 90s. This was a genius partnership by Niantic who had experience with AR games (Ingress) and using a lucrative and always popular IP from The Pokemon Company. It had immediate impact, but I think every one of us couldn't have predicted it would be this popular. The game is breaking all-time records for smartphone games, boosted Nintendo's falling stock by billions, and overall is changing the mobile gaming landscape forever.

Ingress didn't have this popularity because it has a steep learning curve and all those portals and reactors, etc, are nerd talk. You talk to anyone about Pokemon, they know Pikachu. The game mechanics are simple, and it's a fantastic way to get out and be active.

Again, you are wrong. This game is actually fun. Hence the huge adoption rate and, most importantly, retention rate. It's double the average. DOUBLE! What other smartphone app has this? It now has more DAU (daily active users) than Twitter and it's creeping up to the Snapchat level.

Nintendo needed this. It was a gamble, and it paid off immensely. No 3DS Pokémon game could or will ever compare because of the entry barriers and also the reptititive game mechanics.

This is AR: it's simple, it works, and it's the new thing to invest in due to Pokémon Go's excellent execution. Now they have to stabilize the servers to deal with demand, introduce trades and battles, add new generations, and they have a game with dedicated players for years to come which will still surpass any console Pokémon game.

Smartphones are the present and future, and it's time game companies realize this.

I share the same feeling. Added with the fact that Nintendo has been doing stupid shit for a while now, but somehow every time they get this random lucky hit that allows them to keep on wasting away a lot of their time and IPs.
Yeah, what ever happened to the Nintendo that made actual GAMES? This garbage will just encourage them to create more apps.

Okay, I see what your saying here... and I can get around it. Your probably right. I'm just missing the point of the game.

I think it's because the people frequenting GBATemp are dedicated gamers, and we're used to great games on consoles that you pay for once and enjoy all the content.

You can't do this on a smartphone at this scale because casuals are not going to pay up-front (which is why the freemium model was such a hit with Clash of Clans and Candy Crush, and also now). Actually, the game is quite good on this aspect: pokestops give balls, potions and eggs. You can pay for those and other stuff, but it's not needed because the game rewards you with items when you level up.

Its called *the game was just released*. You want the game to be better? Then go work for Niantic.
Not sure what tone you've been reading in my post but I wasn't complaining at all (I even said that the game wasn't released yet in France so why would I complain about lacking features in a non-released game?). On the contrary, I was saying that ok, it's not finished yet and is over hyped right now, but it has the potential to awesome enough to deserve more than the hype it now has when it's done, and I never wrote anywhere that it'd better come soon or whatever.

I get it. Pokemon go is like those games, just wish they would stick with the pay once model. By the way, good job putting it that way.

I think Sun/Moon will be the last Pokemon games on a Nintendo system.

I said years ago that Nintendo would soon get a glimpse of the big bucks to be made on the Android / iOS market. I also said once that happened, Nintendo would swiftly implement Android on its future systems, especially, handhelds.

The first has already come true, we will see if my second prediction happens as well.

And I got mocked and flamed for it.

I don't think Nintendo will stop making Pokemon for their consoles, but they will partner up with more companies that make smartphone games to bring the fun (albeit in different ways, like Go) there as well.

Uhm, are you sure we're thinking about the same GBATemp? :rofl2:

On another note, WAY too many phone apps are resource hogs... I don't know how many apps make my phone slow and hot as hell while the phone is telling me it's not able to charge because the current app is consuming too much... (Twilight, Youtube, camera, Cake Mania and every other game more or less). For the record, I have a Sony Xperia Z so it's not the newest but this is the case for many other smart phones. I don't think you can put too much blame on Niantic for this, I think it's the current day's battery technology that has reached its limits.

Lol :P
But on the other hand, that's still true. Pirates like pay-once games because after avoiding the first payment, they don't have restrictions. While with a freemium game, they'd be on the same plane as everybody (except that they can probably hack saves but still, that's more annoying than just enjoying the game).

I was actually wondering if there are many cheaters or people using hacks in this game? You would think that a game that attracts so many would attract a more than usual amount of cheaters and people trying to find an easy way to get an advantage over the rest.

Second that. But it might not actually be too late...

are you intentionally ignoring that the walking and searching and the tapping and swiping for gym battles are part of the gameplay?

also, aren't you overreacting just a little? they were aware that mobile is a ridiculously profitable market years ago. they didn't instantly switch over to that then, they won't now. shesh.

This show Nintendo that f2p and phone game work, a whole lot.

Prepare for a future with no more full-price game, no more console and no more triple A game. It will be a very dark, dark future.

Pay 20$ to make Mario jump higher :lol

And thats the main reason the movies works; people whant to see animated version of thezir favorites pokemons, even more when they're legendaries.
I'm sorry but your stupidity was pissing me off. The movies and anime are in no way related to the games. If they decide to move them to phones to maximize their revenue then they can. It would not affect the anime at all.

That said I do not want them to come to phones. Considering its Nintendo, we know full well they will jump on the iAP bandwagon. "Pay 10 dollars for an Arceus with full IVs" etc lol. Fuck that bs.
