They probably found traces of evaporation, the system still being wet, something...

I left the system alone for a few days before sending hoping it would dry. Oh well.

Strangely, I submerged my DS3 in the toilet (long story) and it was completely fine after shoving it in a bag of rice for 2 hours. I should probably throw away the rice now...

wait, so had you actually dropped the console in water or knew it had had liquids inside when you made this thread and not actually mentioned it? or are you saying you planned to return it so you soaked it in wet wipes before sending it in to the point it needed to dry off......either way that was a dumb thing to do, if you returning something, do not do anything that could risk your warranty any further, and if your asking for help here you should disclose any info that may be relevant rather than just be like "wow something mad happened to my 3DS it just turned off while i was playing on it..... i wonder why that was :O" wait for people to give a bunch of answers then finally say "oh yeah and i was playing it while scuba diving, i wonder if that's why"

No, I meant my PlayStation 3 controller is fine after being submerged. The n3DS wasn't so lucky. It died from wet wipes but it was still mostly dry throughout. That's what's strange about it.

yeah water damage is hit n miss, it just depends on what is damaged/shorted first, how quickly you remove the battery and where exactly the moisture goes, one drop in the wrong place can be the end of something whilst a full dunk leaves it working, but even if things survive a dunk they can and often will die further down the line unless you properly dry the whole thing off

You're talking about retailers, right?

It was meant more like "if they [Nintendo] really think something is off, whether the serial number is scratched off or the sticker is off or whatever, they have the option to look at it internally." I don't have any firsthand experience with their process, but I have no doubt they have the means to look inside the guts of the hardware and software.

It depends on the employee who will go over the returns too. Make sure you are ready to face consequences if you do get caught though. Doing that is considered retail theft/return fraud.

^This. Better to be safe than to be sorry.

@BrianXP7
It looked for me like a battery problem, the resetted date, without any reasson (insufficient voltage?) ... And the console didnt kernelpanic during NAND restore because... D9 wont do that?
Its just a theory...

Do you have another battery for testing?

BrianXP7: "When I tried to boot it back up, nothing happens aside from the blue LED lighting up."

I got this similar things happen to me too. I thought that my 3ds bricked but turn out that I have to press, select on boot and put option on my Luma configuration from example number 2. Or try number 4 on Plallect guide, download the (test version)arm9loaderhax.bin and see if it bricked or not. Here the troubleshoot from Plaliect guide.

Black screen on SysNAND boot after installing arm9loaderhax
  1. Ensure you have a working payload.
    1. Check for the existence of arm9loaderhax.bin in the root of your SD card.
    2. Check that
      1. /luma/firmware.bin exist; and
      2. /luma/firmware.bin is the correct one for your console.
  2. Try resetting Luma's config and fix options
    1. Delete /luma/config.bin from your SD card
    2. Set your options when it boots
  3. Test booting Decrypt9
    1. On Luma3DS, hold Start on boot
  4. Try this test payload (mirror).
    1. Rename /arm9loaderhax.bin, if it exists, to something else.
    2. Place the arm9loaderhax.bin from the archive linked above in your SD root.
    3. Insert your SD card into your 3DS and power on.
    4. Press A. Your 3DS should power off; this means arm9loaderhax is working and something else is broken; your device is not bricked.
  5. Your 3DS may be bricked. For real time support, contact me or any other channel operator at#3dshacks on Rizon IRC.
Taken from Plaliect guide.

If the moisture damage they are claiming is really the result of using a dampened wipe to clean the system, I'd definitely call Nintendo directly and demand a replacement or to know exactly what moisture was found in the system.
You'd be surprised what talking to them can do. I've had many systems that first appeared to be outside the realm of warranty be repaired when the situation was better explained and reevaluated over the phone by a technician.

I'd point out their official website and N3ds manual tell you to clean the system as follows:

  1. Slightly dampen a soft, cotton cloth with water ONLY and wipe off the Touch Screen and Upper Screen.
  2. Using a dry portion of the same cloth, wipe the screens dry.

If you followed this procedure within normal parameters and used a slightly damp cloth as you claim, your unit should not be considered water damaged, and if it has been flagged as such then it's likely an error or mistake on Nintendo's part.

Also, although checking the serial number through software is an option, as there's is another serial sticker behind the cover, which the cover itself won't be hard and takes a few seconds to take off.

Crap, they already shipped my console back... I guess I'll just order another one when I get a job.

In other news, that Monster Hunter Generations edition New 3DS XL is looking pretty good but there's the chance of it already being updated to 11.0.

It's actually very unlikely, 11.0 is too new.
