Okay, so. To make a playable file, be it on an R4 card or emulator, do I need a specific ROM? Or can it be any okaeri chibi-robo happy richie ōsōji ROM? What are the steps to to patch it with the "patch.xdelta"

I basically need a "How to guide" for dummies just like me who might not be as familiar with the process of DS patching.

Thank you very much.

There is only one ROM of the game (the original Japanese), and yes it is needed. Use the tool (xdelta for windows, multipatch for mac) linked in the first post, which is very easy to use, to apply patch.xdelta to it.

It works fine on both flashcards and emulators (at least desmume).

During the introduction of Mesa they say "I'll play with a bit with these guys."

Should probably be either "I'll play with these guys a bit"" or "I'll play a bit with these guys."

EDIT: Also the line about the diving suit allowing you to "move around under water without getting numb" might be better if it was "without short circuiting" instead.

I got a lot of pull requests today (thanks a lot, ObiKKa!), so if anyone else finds errors and want to report them, please use GitHub to check that they're not already fixed. :)

I'm also thinking of uploading bigger updates (such as the ones today) as new beta patches, instead of waiting for the final patch. So check out the release page from now and then if a newer patch is released.

HOLY SWEET MOTHER OF BABY JESUS.

I've had this thread bookmarked for quite some time, just in case. The original Chibi-Robo is one of my favorite games of all time, and when I found out the only real sequel it got was Japanese-only, I was heartbroken. Founding this thread gave me hope, but I never actually thought you'd make so much progress! (Oopsie...)

At any rate, I've just downloaded the ROM and the latest patch. I fully intend on giving it a full playthrough here shortly, and I'm going to poke around for any translation errors I can report back. Thank you so, so much for working on this and putting it out there!

EDIT: I've just begun, and Telly is talking to me in the Chibi-House. He says: "The one's who bought us..." *Should be ones, without the apostrophe. Looking good so far, though!

Thanks a lot for this patch :)

The problem with all the fonts is that the width for each individual letter is more than it should be, and the space character is just one pixel.
Since it's almost unreadable as is, I did a replacement font for just one of the four fonts used (main one).

But it seems some text is formatted (lines breaks, letters per line) according the earlier font's kerning.

I included the replacement font for anyone who wants to use Tinke / Crystaltile to replace it.

Have you thought about posting and safeguard it in Romhacking.net'sTranslations database? Just in case Nintendo, well, you know...

Someone asked Romhacking.net to remove a translation for a Megadrive Chinese pirate and they just complied. The person behind the request wasn't even the rights holder, he was (most likely illegally) reselling repros of that translation done and distributed prior to that for free by a hobbyist.
They're not DCMA-proof like archive.org is, if Nintendo asked them they (rightfully) wouldn't defy them and risk litigation when they have enough problems paying server hosting.
Though github is definitely more unsafe than lots of other alternatives.

The patch has been submitted to romhacking.net, it's waiting review now.

Nice job with the font, GHANMI. Though I can't say that I've even considered changing the font, I find it very readable. The only character i don't like is the apostrophe.

As you say, the text is dependent on the font size due to line breaks and such. Your modified font should be compatible with my editor (https://github.com/cjuub/okaeri-translation-viewer), if you or anyone else feel like making another font fit the screen. I will not be doing this though, as I find it very readable as it is (and have put a lot of effort into making text look good and fit the screen).

  • Outside the Chibi-House in the beginning of the game, Telly tells us how to pick up the plug. He says, "You can pick it up by touching on it!" which I find rather strange wording. Maybe saying "You can pick it up by using the stylus!" would work better? Just a thought.
  • Shortly after this, Telly says, "You may be a small Chibi-Robo..." All Chibi-Robos are small, so to call him "a small Chibi-Robo" is also odd. Perhaps "You may be small, Chibi-Robo..." would work instead?
  • "Switch mode to vacuuming by pressing the L or R button."
  • "That was a little bit nervous." -- Telly, after Jenny goes to work for the first time. "That was a little bit nerve-wracking." ?
  • "From now on out, let's be helpful to Jenny's family." -- Telly. "From here on out..." ?
  • At one point Telly says Lucky might not have taken a shower, which is strange to hear in reference to a dog. Bath?
  • "Candy Paper" -- Might be better to refer to these pieces of Trash as Candy Wrappers.
  • "99.999999% who take it, passes the examination!" -- The pig police officer said this. Should be pass, to be properly conjugated.
This game is so much like the original and it makes me so happy.

Very nice suggestions, I will fix these tomorrow. Thank you. :)
Also, if you have a GitHub account, please consider posting future suggestions like this as Issues there, makes it a bit easier to manage. But it's fine to post here too!

Awesome! It's so great to see this project finished. Thanks a lot for all the hard work and the countless hours, man! Really appreciated that we can ejoiy this really good game in English. I think, this is a very important translation in the DS Library
I already downloaded the beta and played for a while. :) Sadly I'm not confident enough offer any help regarding English Language.
Personally, I prefer the old font, I guess?! :/

Actually I Stuck in the game... and stopped playing it. Indeed. My Watts household is Zero and there is almost no trash to refill the gague. Or I have to walk long distances to collect trash till Chibis watts is empty and he collapses. Of course I loose happy points and cord length every time. I also cant use the vacuum cleaner till I find enough trash. Vortex of death
Maybe my only option is to restart the game and have besser watts managment :/

Refill the trash can with dust instead of trash (if you don't have enough trash). In the beginning of the game you max out the House-Watts with just one dust bag. The Kitchen Waste trash also restores a lot of Watts, it's a bit rare though.
Just keep at it, eventually you will have a very large battery in both Chibi-Robo and the house, allowing you to explore much more without thinking too much about the Watts!

I suppose I can't collect dust if the watts of the house is empty because the cleaner needs watts from the house and every piece of trash I collect will be used to recharge Chibi Robo. So I can't fire up the dust cleaner until I find many trash pices in one spot to charge up chibi and the house at the same time. I'm try to explore the kitchen more carefully may there is such a spot I did not recognize at first.

This game is everything I'd been dreaming about eversince I finished the first Chibi-Robo. I'm about 7 hours in and I can say that for me it manages to surpass everything the first game has done. Which is impressive considering it was pretty amazing still.

Everything from mechanics to level design has improved.

It's so sad the series went downhill after this.

Seriously OP, thank you SO MUCH. Is there a link for donations somewhere? Do you intend to work on other projects? (Hint: Captain Rainbow)

No, sadly I won't be doing any more translations, it's way too time consuming.

And no, I can't make money from Nintendo's game.

Glad you enjoy it! I thinks it's great too, but I wouldn't go as far as saying it beats the first one. I liked the house/story better in the first!

you can still use the nftr just dual tile encode it. Put common words and other things in two letters space.
you can track that through no$gba debug and then edit in asm. Its on a chinese site somewhere... if it is still up. trace the routine then edit it.
