Amazing, this is A-mazing !
The Sinclair ZX Spectrum was my first home computer, but back then it was called micro computer(I guess it had to do with it's size ) and it's one of the greatest machine's ever created.
It was one of the first mass-produced and most sold computers in the early 80's , it had incredible graphics for it's time, but the beauty of it was that it was very easy to learn how to program with the built in BASIC, and since the BASIC was a little slow to perform, many of us started to program in Z80 assembler, and some people actually made a fortune with home made /bedroom developed software and games.
Back then it was a dream to actually become good at programming, and then find a publisher and sell millions of games to buy a Ferrari !
And believe it or not, some fellers actually pulled it off !

But back at the emulator, I was following the developer's diary for quite a few weeks now, and the guy is making terrific progress., in no time !
While most programmers when it comes to a Spectrum emulator did start off designing a nice guy , and then eventually got a decent but incomplete emulator to run with, this Patrick is starting off with the core elements of the emulation, and things not yet emulated in any other emulator like 128K (which was an advanced model of ZX Spectrum, games were bigger and better ) and virtual tape support( most Spectrum games came on tapes back then) and then he's going to eventually add functionality and a pretty guy!
I wish I could tell him how much I do appreciate his work, but there isn't anyway to leave a feedback on his page, so if you happen to read this , Patrick, thank you so much, keep up your extremely good work and don't forget to add entries to your Developer's diary, it's a very interesting page and I'm a avid reader !

The Spectrum is probably twice as old as I am, but this is still a great piece of homebrew worth keeping an eye on.

Just bought a Sinclair ZX Spectrum+ at the weekend, better keyboard but for some reason its not the same experiance to the rubber crappy one.

Some great games on it regardless, though I doubt some of todays kids would appreciate it.

Emulator is very nice and easy to use.

Excuse my "cluelessness", but I still own a working Sinclair 1000, and although the ZX was an "upgraded" version of the 1000, these things are so old - how could I acquire or transfer my current games (on audio tapes) to a rom-like format? Or are there people crazy enough to have done that already?

I really like the idea of playing those good ol' classic games on my NDS, but I'm wondering if it's as easy to find them as it is to find NDS/GBA releases.

This is all so exciting

Very easy to find rom images for these computers, they've been around since early 90's (I've had a ZX emulator on my Amiga and old 386 PC!). Can't give you a link but google Worldofspectrum and you'll get what you want in the archive section of the site.

Blimey a Sinclair 1000! That's the US version of the ZX81. Did you have ram pak wobble woes as well ?

Right.. ZX81 emulator for DS?
http://www.noddybox.co.uk/nds.php?I=ds81

And games/apps?
http://www.zx81.nl/files.html

You need some software to try out ZXDS?

Nearly 7000 spectrum games are available legally from the following web site.
http://www.worldofspectrum.org/games/index.html

Use the following PC Spectrum emulator to convert to .sna format if you want instant loading.
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/paul.dunn4/ZXSpin.zip

The AY emulation is awesome. Tried a few classics Amaurote,Operation wolf,Auf Wiedersehen Monty and they all sound great.
Bundled with the emulator is a Foxoft demo which really shows off the sound chip.
Patrik is making solid and steady progress. I look forward to the next build.

dudereno you seem to know a lot about Sinclair machines.....
smile.gif

Anyway welcome to the forums, I'm a Speccy fan before a Nintendo Fan and having the two things combined is a dream come true....
By the way how do you feel about Patrick's approach to his ZXDS emulator compared to the others(I assume you know all about it) ?
I think this guy knows what he's doing, and starting off with the most difficult side of the emulation is a good move, because once that is out of the way, one can concentrate at adding a nice user interface.
Personally, at this point I would love to see ZXDS core and DSpec user interface and file system combined, but I guess there will be plenty of room for improvement on both fronts, ....if the authors keep up their work that is
smile.gif

And by the way do you know if this patrick dude writes on any forum ?
I thought he might be a member of WOS but I don't know his user name ..Anyway I would like to find a place to discuss ZXDS development, here at GBAtemp seems a litte awkward at least....

I feel Patrik's dev cycle is solid. He's starting with a firm foundation and slowly building from there. I'm sure this will aid the compatibility of the emulator in the long run. No point having a wiz bang GUI if the z80 core is miss firing.
I also like the way he has documented his work by way of a dev diary. This is almost as interesting as the emulator itself.
Another key topic is the way he has stated that he doesn't want any user feedback at this stage. This shows that the guy means business. This shows focus. I've been embarrassed by other speccy DS dev's websites/forums being bombarded with whining demands to support this flashcard/add this feature..etc. *cough* kasim*r *cough*
Lets just give the guy some respect and let him get on with the good work.
As for discussion, I think this thread is a good a place as anywhere else on the internet tubes.

Here's a question to start the ball rolling. Now that we have an emu with AY sound and 128k, can you recommend any Russian/eastern block spectrum demoscene websites that can be navigated by an English dewd? I had a brief google and snaffled a couple of tap images but they must be a well organized demo library out there somewhere. I want to see for myself how far this software can be pushed.

I had my share of Speccy love back in the days

I remember those endless "fights" with my friend who owned a C64 over which one of the two was better. Heh, great memories

I loved ZXAdvance on the GBA but I haven't tried any Sinclair emus on DS. I hoped to see the new version of DSpec but it seems like TheHiVE won't be releasing it anytime soon.

How's the ZXDS in terms of keyboard emulation? My favourite genre on ZX was interactive fiction (Dracula, Frankenstein, Kayleth, Winter Wonderland...) so I'd like to see a nice and user friendly keyboard before I decide to try it out.

It's very basic at the moment. I'd say functional but not very adequate if you're a text adventure fiend. I'd stick with SpeccyDS if you play 48k text adventures at present. It has save states/DLDI support and good compatibility.

I can also recommend Papafuji's DS-frotz if you want to play text adventure classics by the likes of Infocom, Magnetic Scrolls, Level9 and Scott Adams.
Zork on the DS rocks the bells.

For those who don't know much about the Spectrum, here's a quick run down of some of the most popular games for the system....

for nostalgic people only..I admit today's kids wouldn't even bother to understand this...

http://zxdemo.org and http://pouet.net are good places to start.

Yeah I've seen that, lately i don't check the WOS so often, but today I did and I've seen the posts.
Somehow I assumed he was one of those guys with over 6000 posts with a different user name, but then I saw he is a fresh user with just 4 or 5 posts.
Anyway it's good to have a dialog established, at least there's a place to say thank you.
Even though the tape emulation is still not accellerated(making playing games a bit of a pain) it's unbeatable when it comes to 128K and AY emulation, in fact now, we are able to play for the first time full sized 128K games with sound via a snapshot.
This opens up a lot of more options, games like Robocop, Target Renegade or Knightlore were all previously pretty much unplayable, or at the most one could play just the first level and without 128K sound, now I can play around with a lot more games.
