Background:

I'm a noob but I managed to downgrade my small n3DS (forgot which firmware) and install a CFW following tutorials.

Now I'm trying to do the same for my partner's n3DS XL on firmware 9.9.0-26E.

At first I was running into problems with the browser nag message but managed to get browser hax working and then install menuhax using this guide.

https://gbatemp.net/threads/browserhax-is-still-working.400991/

I then used Safesysupdater to downgrade like I did with my n3ds. During the downgrade I was so happy because it seemed to be working on the first try. My partner then pointed out that the battery was low so I quickly plugged the charger in. That's when everything went wrong.

I forget exactly what happened but after a little bit, a Nintendo error message came up telling me to contact Nintendo. I shat myself, thinking I'd brick the n3ds. Luckily after a few moments of panic, I realised I could still boot it if I took the SD card.

Problem:

Every time I try browserhax, it gets stuck exactly at the dark yellow (orange?) screen and then an error message appears.

"an error has occurred, please close any soft ware and restart your system"

I've tried:
Formatting the SD card
Deleting the files and replacing them on the SD card
Different internet connection
The same thing over and over again.

Any ideas why browserhax stopped working or anyway around it?

It might have borked after browser install, were you using the latest ssu build?

What's borked?

Yeah used the latest ssu build which successfully downgraded my n3ds. This one however, can't even get browserhax to work anymore. It's very frustrating.

All downgrading have a small chance of just failing during downgrade and chances are it happen right after it downgraded the browser so the exploit just doesn't work

If you have cubic ninja or OOT set that up for 9.2.0_20 and finish the downgrade

Here's how you can "fix" your partial downgrade:
Go to smealums website: http://smealum.github.io/3ds/ and download the ropbin payload for your n3ds 9.2 (It's important you download it for 9.2 and not your current FW).
Try to use browserhax on your 3ds, it will crash again but it should create a file on your sd card.
Connect your sdcard to your pc and replace the created file with the ropbin payload you downloaded from smealums website. (I'm not entirely sure how it was called, I think it was webkithax_temp.bin bin might also be different).
Now run browserhax and it should just boot up fine. If you're planning on using menuhax to "redowngrade" you need to do the same with the robpinpayload_menuhax_[...].bin.

Why does this work? You currently have a "partial" downgrade. Browserhax and Menuhax still think you're on the old firmware and download the payload for 9.9. The exploitable "systems" are on 9.2 already so the payload won't work anymore. After "spoofing"/"injecting" the different 9.2 payload everything should work fine. You can now complete the downgrade without any issues.

When I saw your post, I was so happy because it made sense and it was something I hadn't tried before.

Browserhax froze and had the error message again. It's always the same time. Not the first light yellow one but the darker yellow/orange. :(

It is the universal adjetive mai boi. Also never use safesysupdater. Low success rate. I should start a petition to name is UNsafesysupdater.

Regular sysupdater didn't work at all for my n3ds. Safesysupdater was the only thing that actually let me downgrade. It's strange because besides the checking, everything should be the same.

If you have oot and a 3ds that's homebrew ready download the starter kit from smea's website and run the ootsploit installer from there, follow the onscreen instructions and install the hax for 9.2.0_20

It's as safe as the regular sysupdater since the .9 release I believe. It installs in the proper order with nfirm being last

Downgraded my o3DS with larbob's SysUpdater and I have the same problem. I thought I had a partial too, so I updated and downgraded again but it still crashes after the orange screen.

I think Tesa might have pointed out the problem, but I noticed the "webkithax_tmp.bin" I downloaded from smea's website had been overwritten by BrowserHax. Wasn't there an "offline" version of BrowserHax which didn't attempt to download the ROP from HTTP if it was present on SD ?

Try holding Y while loading browser hax and see if it produces a .bin file that isn't webkithax_tmp

Nope, kept Y pressed from the moment I touched the slider and it still overwrote the webkithax_tmp.bin. Btw, the one I downloaded from smea's website is 64kB whereas the one downloaded from BrowserHax is 32kB (that's how I know it's not the same^^). Don't know why though.

EDIT: don't know why but it finally worked (~20 attempts from this post) ! Not sure Y is for something because webkithax still hasn't been overwritten, but now I have menuhax so I should be fine.

Oh sliderhax, that just takes a million tries to get working. Get it working once and immediately setup menuhax

So I guess it's not really broken, just extremely buggy...

Huh u know I had a tutorial for this I had to change my theme thats it

I saw that tutorial (and many others) and that didn't help. Changing theme only ensure you have menuhax uninstalled.
